Just amazing those old wooded step up platforms which where at several Adelaide suburban stations thos e platforms where very steep to climb particularly if you where an elderly person no hand rails. How times have changed with disability and wheel chair access.
Worked at BAe and for Defence for many years and remember the line when it was in use but never used it. There is a back entrance to DSTG from the Eliz South station...I guess that replaced the old train service. bit of a walk though!
The now defunct Sleeps Hill Station was a step up platform as was Lynton for many years and the Golf links platform on the Grange line the platform was right in middle of thd Grange Golf course.Osborne station on the now defunct gas works loop at Osborne also from memory had one. Anybody remember others there was many in country areas too.
Beautiful photos Mike. As you pointed in in part 1, very little evidence of all those tracks remain with only station no 3 remaining to this day. Goes to show other steam engines did run on that line other than Redhens. Love it! ❤
When the NRM sent the photos to me, albeit late for my original video (my fault I should have checked with them again), there was something about them... Thankfully, I got permission to use them as a slideshow. I just love the old school Kodak feel. They're a work of art that gives us a window into the 70s - or something... I'm actually happier that these images got to stand on their own.
The old loco shed for the penfield line still stands and was in use for many years by a team that my father was apart of. They used ot at the time as a reverb chamber and many other things. The tracks were still in the floor and outside it. Unsure its use now as he has been retired for about 6 years
@Outdoorstype was at the time my father was there. He could not say much in his 36 years there. I went there a lot as a kid on family days and played around in it
I’m from Victoria and looking at this line on a map thought it fascinating with the balloon loop. What this video showed me was how far apart were the double tracks, just wide enough for the island platforms without curving around them. I also have gone around Outer Hatbour balloon loop when it was still possible. I was disappointed when the Outer Harbour balloon was truncated to a single terminus with a crossover. I was also fascinated with the grandstand platforms. There were a few around the Adelaide system, I don’t know if any remain. I was told they were intended to be a temporary platform and built up if patronage improved. The only equivalent in Vic wss the Beech Forest station with the 2’6” narrow gauge. The rail did a loop around the tennis court. Apparently the tennis court is still there today.
If you search RUclips there is some grainy video of the old Beech Forest railway along with activities on the balloon loop. Tried to find it again as I haven’t seen it for a couple of years and would love to find it again🇦🇺
used that line a couple of times in the early 80s doing a week of school work experience at British Aerospace, riding the redhens (with door open) I think I was about 14...good fun
Thanks Drac. All images are provided by the National Railway Museum and copyright belongs to the authors. I just put them together with some music. Thanks for watching!
@@Outdoorstype did they provide them online or did you need to go to the NRM? I'd love to see if they had any photos of other dismantled lines like Willunga and Northfield.
Sorry for the late reply. The NRM sent them to me. It was a long process and I hope to one day get better access to the archives. I've been talking to them for a while and paid up to become a member - so that may have helped. They must have so many photos... I love getting these images out there while always respecting the creators and curators.

I have been lucky enough to have travelled on this line three times, twice behind an Rx locomotive. One trip was completely around the balloon loop.
Nice share buddy love the little photo animation you made love the photography 🔥🔥🔥

I didn't know that! I wonder if it's top secret! 😄

God forbid there be anything as dangerous as those platforms remaining today! :)

Riding around in trains with the doors open. Good times. Doubt we'll ever see that again. Thanks, Wolfe!
I was looking at the platform made out of boards even in those days it would have been classed as dangerous
Great photos!

Maybe you could do a video about the GMH line ?
One of these days I'll look into it. Thanks for watching.

The train has been replaced by a bus service now.
