Big Milestone for the Great Central Railway Nottingham

  • We're back at the Great Central Railway Nottingham to witness of big milestone for the railway. We are riding on the first passenger service in 5 years from Ruddington Fields to Loughborough - their special Twixmas service for one day only.
As the GCR Reunification bubbles away nicely behind the scenes, the GCRN continues to get back on it's feet. Before Christmas, their Jingle Bells Express services saw passenger trains returning to Rushcliffe Halt. However today we see the first service on the full length of the line as far as the newly replaced A60 bridge in Loughborough.
We board the Class 107 green DMU service from Ruddington Fields on the 11am service. We look for the usual landmarks of fifty steps bridge, Rushcliffe Halt, East Leake, Barnstone Tunnel and Stanford Viaduct. We turn around at the stop board as the entry to Loughborough. It gives a good view of the trackbed towards Loughborough Central of the renewed bridges and new viaduct yet to be built.
After riding the train, we head up to see the next service crossing the impressive Loughborough viaduct. As a bonus we also call in at Quorn & Woodhouse on the Great Central Railway Leicestershire.

What a great sight, a train on the A60 bridge and the beautiful, but sadly defaced Stanford-on-Soar viaduct. I really hope as part of the reunification, the grafitti will be removed asap. Lovely ride!

Hi Paul, well that looks fun! A beautiful day an historic day on the GCR. Its great seeing a busy train rolling through the countryside seeing some lovely bridges & stopping at places of interest. The old DMU not luxurious but gets you from A to B. Nice aerial shots Paul. The steam train was a fab bonus! I bet you had a grand day out, thanks for sharing your exciting day. 😊🤗👍❤️

Fabulous video, thanks. There's so much railway history to be seen here, and things will only get more exciting as reunification nears. Incidentally, a few days later (January 6th and 7th), the River Soar was much, much fuller and wider and parts of Quorn were deep under water!

A bit of time capsule history at 3:18 - the original Trans-Clyde network maps, dating from 1979 when the Argyle Line (Glasgow Central Low Level) line re-opened. That version lasted until 1983 when the line to Paisley Canal and Kilmacolm closed. I suspect that some of the missing colours will be when the revised map was simply stuck over the original, and hence, when the stuck on version was removed, it took some of the other markings.
Nice video, despite your technical issues.

@WobblyRunner yes it was. I was going to Nottingham Polytechnic for an interview. Someone at school told me the line was still open, so I was delighted to have a chance to travel on the Central. The DMU was a noisy old train, grinding through the gears. A relative who worked at Rugby Midland told me the staff at Rugby would go up to the Central station in the winter, and leave the DMU on tickover all night, so it would be ready to go in the morning!

My visit to this place won't be this year, but it will happen in a couple of years time, a long 1 in the making. Now something very fitting is another RUclipsr I watch, The Village Idiot (TVI) began the Rushcliffe series this time last year and completed it just before Christmas, and all of Nottinghamshire for that matter, he's now working on more of Leicestershire this year after only lightly visited it in the past couple of years. I cannot recall if I have ever set foot in Leicestershire before, but I have been to Nottinghamshire, and I can predict a fun visit when I get to these parts!👍👏

@WobblyRunner Thanks Paul, my visit will come some day and who knows if I'll meet you there, I also forgot to mention that up until TVI started the Rushcliffe series, I originally thought Rushcliffe was in Leicestershire but thanks to him, I now know it's Nottinghamshire. With Leicestershire now postponed as a family member has just recently moved to Taunton (Somerset is another county I don't know if I've set foot in, as I have been to Devon and Cornwall, but I have got a big list for that county for the coming years), I have decided this year will hopefully see a visit to 1 of its neighbouring counties, Rutland (never been) or Northamptonshire (only briefly stopped at Watford Gap and Northampton services on my trips to London), both of which I'm really looking forward to visiting with a lot to see!

Random thought on the GCR....would it be an idea if the reunified GCR could/should form a partnership with the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre at Quainton Road. Should the line re-open north from Aylesbury Vale towards Bletchley, perhaps between the aforementiod may potentially work towards operating a main line tour/occasional service to/from Marylebone to/from the GCR via Bletchley and Midland Mainline. Other services could go over other remaining GC rails for rail tours. Could this idea go on to become a cooperative rail operator similar to one already in existence. Services could include Aylesbury to Milton Keynes and perhaps get involved with the campaign to reopen the Ivanhoe line from Leicester to Burton.
