  • This time on Knucklehead Garage we are finally hitting pay dirt on Project Towverlander our 7.3 Excursion Overland vehicle build. We have outfitted the Diesel Excursion overland vehicle with some of the best overlanding stuff you can buy and will be driving this 1 ton beast 5000 miles from Atlanta, Georgia to Colorado, Utah, Nevada, and back. This will be the ultimate overlander test with an epic mix of trail riding and camping. For this episode we are hitting Pike's Peak before hitting some trails on our way to camp and take the biggest SUV ever made down the treacherous Black Bear Pass off road trail in Colorado. We might try to do it in 2wd just to prove how capable the Overland Excursion build is. We can't believe how much fun overlanding Colorado can be. Stay tuned for part 2 as we do some hardcore wheeling in Moab, Utah and push Jamin way outside of his comfort zone. You do not want to miss this!

    Looks like a great trip and seeing some stuff you probably wouldn’t have seen without a well built rig to get you there. Kinda confused if the excursion was built to take “overlanding” purely to make fun of overlanding, or it was built for the same purpose most people build an overland rig which is to have a vehicle that gets you places most couldn’t go. I understand that you did it in 2 wheel drive, but i don’t think anyone would take a bone stock 2 wheel drive excursion over BBP. The 20 k worth of suspension under that thing did its job well.

    • @freedomworx

      Built to Overland. Not a joke. Matt wasn’t sure about the Overland thing… I converted him with the Excursion. And no, I’m not advocating that anyone do BBP in a stock 2wd. We had lots of clearance, KM3, and 6300lbs on the rear tires. Plenty of grip.

      @@freedomworx i thought that i was catching the mood of the video correct, but to be up front, I haven’t gotten to watch the build out fully, or know the backstory. I’m sure I’ve missed a ton of context so my bad if the comment seemed “overlandy”. I live in ATL, have a jeep that i tent camp out of, and a GX470 that i built for out west trips. Build for the conditions you’re going to be in. I love that excursion build and even though BBP isn’t technically that difficult. As someone who lives here and is familiar with that terrain in a 7.3 F350, I can confirm that using 4X4, even when you don't think you "need" it, has three major benefits in this order: 1 MUCH smoother ride overall; 2 Keeps the trails from getting torn up from sliding rear wheels up or down over loose rock; 3 Provides better control/safety while crawling down over steps - especially around corners.

I can put 3 tons in the bed lol. Considering plopping a gigantic camper on it with storage lockers on the sides. Can you dually swap it so you dont blow a tire in the wilderness on those rough roads? At least run F weight range tires... Nobody realizes a gasser can actually haul more weight safely. And ive run the math they cost the same to drive with much less gasser maintenace and probably half the sticker price. Stock theyre pretty close on torque but the V10 makes a good amount more ponies on the top end. It goes 85mph no problem and itll yank a tank too. @@BustedKnuckleVideo it will sit just about 2” above your passenger side valve cover. I welded a bung fitting directly underneath the turbo on top of the passenger valve cover so it’ll drain back into the engine via a two inch long clear tube so I can see the actual oil running through it as it’s idling. When I made my setup, I made a few extra pieces of the 3” exhaust pipe coming from the factory turbine leading into the t6 turbine side of the low pressure larger turbo. All someone would have to do is copy the extra custom pipe I made and it should bolt right up. I have mine installed on my 97 350 crew cab and there was no cutting required (on the truck) when I bolted mine up. It’s my poor boy compound turbo setup haha and it’s definitely worth doing. I think what took me so long initially was fabricating that custom 3” exhaust that’s leaving the original turbo and then feeding into the t6 on the larger turbos hot side(compressor). It took me several times reshaping it and rewelding it back up and after a half dozen attempts it’s right on the money. If you and your buddies decide to build this kit, I’ll be glad to mail you this pipe out for you to copy, but I want it back when you’re done lol. Thanks again for all the videos you make and take the time to edit for us and let me know if you’re considering this build and I’ll email you everything I have on it that I’ve done to mine. Impressive to fit that hotel on wheels through Black Bear Pass…. Just one thing to say, you really should’ve been in 4 Lo during most of the climbing and technical stuff. It’s not just safer and affords more control but it causes a lot less wear and tear on the trails.

    • @freedomworx
      @freedomworx 2 года назад

      We were in 4Lo with the front hubs unlocked. I understand what you’re saying. But we really didn’t have any traction issues. There is so much weight on the rear axle, the tires won’t spin unless you’re in extreme terrain.

    • @BustedKnuckleVideo
      @BustedKnuckleVideo  2 года назад

      It literally never spun a tire on BBP. Too much weight to lose traction

      Hey bro apparently you haven't been in the San Juans it's loaded with tons of people on the trails. Tons of tires can chew up the trails in 4x4 or not. There is also monster storms that wash out the trails that's life. Have you ever thought of being a trail Cop ??

    Question for ya… what year and what engine was the best (either gas or Diesel) for the Ford Excursion.. thanks!

    • @BustedKnuckleVideo
      @BustedKnuckleVideo  2 года назад +1

      The earlier 7.3s were best. The later 7.3s had PMRs that won’t hold a lot of power. Both are very reliable if you keep the power down though.

    • @freedomworx
      @freedomworx 2 года назад

      All 2000 and most 2001 7.3s had forged connecting rods. Only really a benefit if you are making over 400ish Horsepower. If I were getting any other engine, I’d probably buy a 2005 just to get the newest truck I could and get the updated grille and bumper.

      It depends on what you want to do with your Excursion. I have had my Ex for 15 years, towing illegally heavy up and down Colorado mountains, using it as my offroad/hunting rig, and my daily. I installed a 5.5 inch lift, 18 inch wheels, and 35 inch tires. I have the V10 with now over 250k miles and zero issues. I did upgrade the trans cooler years ago, and had a trans rebuild at 230k miles.
      But the V10? It keeps on going. Maybe that's why the engine was in production for over 20 years. No Ford diesel engine even comes close to that. Just something to think about. But you go get that diesel if you want.
