      @@artprof Yes, I have even watched the still life and self-portrait videos twice! Those are both really awesome videos, packed with so much information that is useful for whatever medium one is working in. Useful concepts for crayon i have learned from you include not working on white paper (i've tried black, but am mostly working on toned paper with crayon), putting down a layer of highlights and shadows first (also experimenting with putting down a layer of contrasting colours, which i picked up from your gouache video with another instructor), and using fixative (for the first time!) between layers. I use these all the time, when I tell people what I’m using they automatically assume I mean crayola. I try to tell them about the brand but their brain turns off when they see the price. They are not comparable to crayola, the wax used in neocolor 1 is a higher quality and density than most others, the pigmentation is truly artist grade(very pigmented) I wish people would understand you’re truly getting what you pay for with these crayons. Caran D’Ache is a premium brand, I love their colored pencils too.

    Hello ^^ i'm really curious about one thing : are the neocolor II layering as well as the regular neocolor? I love using watercolor techniques and would be really interested in trying them, but, well, the advantage of those crayons is also their ability to mix and layer, so i'm curious about a comparison, if you, professor Liu, or someone else of the team have tried them both? I'm curious to know how the binder affects their abilities (i suppose that the neocolor are wax based where the neocolor II may use another binder, maybe with gum Arabic)

    Thanks for the video. Just a few questions come to mind: can you use these crayons on top of an acrylic layer on canvas as a drawing tool ?
    After you do this, how do you varnish or put on a final protective coat so the whole painting has a protective coat ? (I usually use gloss gel mixed with water)
    Is there a better drawing tool that would provide the rough broken line of a crayon that can be used for final highlights and line work, to which a final protective coating can be applied.

    • @artprof
      @artprof  4 года назад +2

      I think you probably can use the crayons over acrylic on canvas, depending on the roughness of the canvas, the crayon probably won't give you the ability to make a lot of details. For the final protective coat, you can use gloss or semi gloss acrylic varnish, we demonstrate how to do that in our acrylic painting tutorial at the end: ruclips.net/video/CFULyTf-RzM/видео.html
      I think if you want a drawing tool for final highlights, etc. perhaps take a razor blade and sharpen the crayon to a thin tip. Good luck! -Prof Lieu

      @@artprof thanks for your reply! I guess I was not detailed enough in my question. My concern was that when brushing on the varnish, the Caran D'ache - crayon will dissolve since it is water-soluble. So perhaps perhaps some sort of fixative on top of the paint-on varnish. The question is which one? I need to avoid strong odours. Thanks so much for your help.

    • @artprof
      @artprof  4 года назад +3

      The Caran d'Ache Neocolor I crayons are not water soluble, so you would have no problem with the acrylic varnish. Caran d'Ache Neocolor II crayons ARE water soluble, so just don't use those. Hope that helps! -Prof Lieu
