In italy we just had a 600+ players pauper tournament called Paupergeddon. Luckly the pauper scene here is very big, in every major city you should find a local league, in Padua we have on average around 35 to 40 players overy two fridays. Best format.

Healthy meta game, chill community, low barrier of entry, with an insanely large card pool for the brewers out there. I hope it catches on more like how Pioneer has. Both these formats need some love and definitely more people should try them.

I'm lucky to live in Italy where pauper is really popular. I can play 10-15 people tournaments almost every week and we have Paupergeddon which is the biggest pauper tournament in the world with 500+ people. The last edition was a 3 day event.
I agree a lot with your consideration about playstyle: there are a lot of powerful cards in Pauper like Lightning Bolt or Counterspell that give you the complete MTG experience, but it's also a format without broken cards that win the game by themselves (no Ragavan or pitch elementals) and building value over the game is really important. It incentivizes players to play patient and smart, which helps you grow as a player.
I hope Pauper can become more and more popular even in the rest of the world so you can all play at your LGS every week 😊

@@tempestandacomputer6951 Bolt, Counterspell, Brainstorm, Preordain, Ponder, Dark Ritual, Hydro/Pyroblast, Spell Pierce, Spellstutter Sprite... there ara so many good cards in Pauper that are or used to be staples in other constructed formats. In a way it's simpler MTG than other eternal formats because commons usually have fewer lines of text, but the gameplay is very skill intensive and there are a lot of viable strategies.

@@malte54 it is a cheap format. The reason those cards are expensive isn't because of pauper it's because they're used in other formats and have no chance of being reprinted. I'd argue that mono red aggro is rarely over $100 in pioneer and modern, but in pauper its only ~$15 :D My only gripe is how rare it is to find pauper events. Even here in Colorado there are only 2 LGS' that have pauper nights. I'm literally one of about twenty pauper players in the entire state. That said when I joined I was welcomed by just about every member of that group, and when I see them around on FNM the first thing they ask is 'Did you bring your pauper?'

Well, since you don't have a kuldotha red I can see why you think that pauper is super healthy. The problem with pauper is kuldotha red and affinity, the first is so fast and consistent that that alone can hinder a lotta strategies. The second have sooo much card draw and value that can hinder those decks too, so it's pretty hard to any other deck to be consistent while synthesizer and dispute are a thing.

I agree that pauper is a good format for entry due to the low price of decks and the flexibility. Especially if the people you play with aren't playing "meta" decks or what would be competetive decks.
Commander is also a good format due to the versatility, but has a significantly bigger price tag for entry. I think commander is good because even if you play only one or two decks, the games will almost never look the same since you won't be garantueed to draw the same as previous games. Even more so if your opponents have several decks. Commander has it's own issues of course, but I still think it's a great format if you look past the price tag.

Pauper is not the best format at all... in regards of the cheapest, the format is super rigged only 4 decks are competitive and besides burn the format is super midrange and slow that you mostly run out of time in mol. If you want to introduce some friend into magic and choose pauper as the format to play is better to pick jank decks than meta decks by far... Even in the other formats like modern or pioneer you can always choose jank decks.
Imo the best format objetively, if you and your playgroup is OK with proxies is Old School 93/94. Cus theirs almost no meta and the games are very stray forward and fast, you can play 3 games while playing only 1 in pauper...
Trust me, my friends play pauper and play always the same decks and one has a Zombie decks that is useless against a meta deck... So no,,, pauper is NOT the best format.
