Tonight (19th dec. 2024) i went to a recital in Amsterdam where pianist Yeol Eum Son from South Korea, played works of piano lions who did compose themselves. And one of these composing piano lions was Alicia de Larrocha of which Yeol Eum Son played: "Sonata Antigua", composed in 1941. AdL called her Compositions "sins of youth" but she was to modest to pay attention to her compositions. After the Interval Yeol Eum Son played 13 préludes op.32 by Rachmaninov. She is an amazing good pianist, and I was happy she played a composition of the great AdL.🎹🙏
I grew up with this great woman. Now her great daughter is giving her to us again. My God. Listen to this genius playing. She played for me in person three times. I played for her as well. I miss her so much. I'm overwhelmed. She is no longer with us. Oh God bless her. She was kind and generous as is her family who gives us such recordings in heirs of her.
I heard her I believe in the 1980’s play books I and II of Iberia at the Tanglewood summer festival . it was a beautiful, full moon evening casting magical shadows on the landscape and although I knew I should have remained in my seat with visual as well as aural attention to this great artist, I left the open air auditorium and wandered the grounds with the music still clearly audible creating an unforgettable experience. An treasure that remains. Thank you Madame de Larrocha.
No other pianist gets close to what she does in the Spanish repertoire. Absolutely miraculous, perfect sound, dynamics, rubato. Incredibly elegant and noble. Pure genius!
I heard her play Goyescas at the Munson Williams Proctor Museum in Utica NY - in the spring of 1968. I was in the second row, and was totally mesmerized...this music was in her blood. It was, simply, one of the greatest musical experiences of my life. Truly spellbinding.
Genius one of the greatest pianists of our time. I thank God that I have learned more from her by chance meeting and listening to such an abundance of live recordings she and her heirs have so graciously left behind. I miss her so much. The world misses her. I would of given anything to be in this audience. See if you are truly great competitions don't need to be won as a matter of fact my teacher had a sign in his office saying "competitions are for horses" I agree. I am so thankful to God for such playing that is so mesmerizing. I am in tears. She is here forever thank God forever her family daughter and heirs who gives us much and I am so moved and it truly gives me some relief. Although the loss of such a women cannot ever be truly be overcome. I literally cried and mourned for days learning of her death. God bless her. She is in the heart of the world as is Horrowitz et.al This gives me great comfort. We miss you Alicia.
Your words of admiration are wonderful to read and reflect well on you as an artist. Thank you for the most wonderful Schubert séance in Vienna last year. I look forward to hearing you again on 16.6.2021. I will make sure to have you sign my facsimile of Op. 110 this time, together with Horowitz, Richter, Gulda and many other great pianists. Not having had the chance to hear Alicia de Larrocha in concert is one of the greatest losses of my life. This live audience recording from 1984 with Goyescas is one of the greatest piano recordings of all time.
I totally agree Mr.Volodos.I never heard anyone playing these great works like AdL did. I was in chock too when I found out about her death. Luckily, her daughter and heirs do everything to keep her legacy for eternity. I was lucky to attend concert in Amsterdam where she played the Beethoven Sonata op. 110. , and works of Schumann. this was a memorable concert too. I hope she is playing for the angels above us.😥🙏
It's been a while since I listened to this, and her playing of this music still floors me...she once played the entire cycle in Wash, DC but I was too young to attend...even in an age when there are so many pianists who play well on a technical level, I don't think her authority in this music will ever be matched by anyone anywhere...the ending of El pelele sends shivers...
The very air seems to come alive awakening us to the fire and nobility of the Spanish heart. I know of nothing like this in the whole of our piano repertoire with the possible exception of some of the Nocturnes of Chopin. Visions from long ago. The dignity, grace and precision of these great works will live forever. Thank you Alicia for showering us with your great love and insights into the true nature of the Goyescas. You made them come alive before our inner eye.
Alicia de Larrocha, forever! she is a genius, always unique, brilliant. One of the greatest pianists Ever! Thanks for sharing this wonderful vídeo, indeed! :-D to lisilisin :you,re very welcome! i,m 13 yo, from Spain and for me, Alicia de Larrocha is a clear reference for young pianists indeed!
I was there on this memorable evening in 1984! I still have the program. Her interpretations are always 'singing' and colourful and her touch is so clear and moving... She will be always one of my favorite pianists i heard in my life. And still i am very proud of the wonderful acoustics in our 'Concertgebouw'. What a good recording is this!
¡¡¡Absolutamente prodigioso!!!
She must have played several encores, can you upload those as well? Fabulous performance of some of the most torturous music ever composed...and the famed acoustics of the hall are clearly apparent.
What a fabulous performance! The tonal range, warmth & clarity are best possible, but it's the musicality which is of a beauty to make one weep. I usually skip "El Amor...." and "La Serenata..." (nos. 5 & 6), cos i don't like them much, just re-working the white-hot inspiration of the first four pieces; here i was glued to the whole suite, one of Alicia's great performances, (among so many!). One wishes to hear others in this work, but returning to AdL is to realise that she had a unique secret, still not discovered by anyone else. I was lucky to catch one of her last public appearances in Goyescas, at La Palau de la Musica in Barcelona, (2001), still full of mastery and poetry, but i can only envy the lucky Amsterdammers present at this concert, where she was at the height of her amazing powers. Thank you for posting it.
Her unique secret is i think, that she could move you to tears by her playing. She was absolutely unique. I heard other pianists in Goyescas, but no one could reach the level of AdL to my opinion. I don't know how it is with publishing rights, but could this performance not be published on CD? The brilliant acoustics and performance differences (specially in nbrs. 5 & 6) are so marvelous that The Concertgebouw should allow Lisilisin to do something with this performance. And at the same time the Concertgebouw should place a Statue in remembrance of AdL. Like they did for Rubinstein and Horowitz....
@@helgeevjuUnfortunately they still didn't. During the Covid pandemic, the famous piano series of Mr. Riaskoff, went bankrupt. I think he could have been the only person who could have effected a statue for the great AdL. Maybe her daughter could take this up with the Concertgebouw. I met her once during a concert there, but there was no time to bring up this issue.😢
I have heard a studio recording of Artur Rubinstein playing 'La Maja y el Ruisenor.' I can only wonder at how wonderfully he might have played the entire set of Goyescas, given his affinity for Spanish music. Hoomeyow!!

This is the Goyescas of Granados’ dreams.
I love this women who I met twice. I'm in tears
Absolutely peerless playing, it transcends the piano, employing all colours of the full symphony orchestra!
The best playing ever. I miss her

Just listened again to this recital. Incomparable playing!
