To clarify the Russia - Denmark part, it’s Kaliningrad, a Russian province between Poland and Lithuania, that’s close to Denmark. There’s barely 300 miles of sea and nothing else in between the two, hence the “sort of right on the border”. Of course, mainland Russia is further away.
It would also make sense if Kaliningrad was not a part of Russia as during soviet era Russia (when this phrase assumably originated) Denmark would have nearly bordered the iron curtain aka communist land. Sidenote op is definitely Arthur.

So true about the tourist discussion. It ends up happening in a lot of these places across the world. Coz tourists coming is a double edged sword coz it fuels the economy and gives so much money to those areas but simultaneously when people start coming in buying property and driving the living costs up it then prices out the locals so the locals hostility is not just anger towards the tourists themselves but moreso anger towards the rich folks who end up hoovering up property and turning it into Airbnbs and all sorts.

I grew up in Mozambique and moved to Portugal about 5 yrs ago, but my mum grew up in a small village on the silver coast, and my entire family still live there, we are definitely locals at this point and are completely intergrated in the community, we speak Portuguese and complain about foreigners lmao. The main issues with foreigners is they feel entitled to a lot and complain about Portugal a lot, may I point out that this is predominantly the Brits, the Americans and the French. Property prices where my family live are off the charts, many of the people who grew up there, have their family homes and family in the area just simply cannot affort to live there anymore, I mean my mum and I certainly can't afford it and my mum earns UK rates for working in development in Moz, so it isn't like we don't make enough money. You go down to our local bars and restaurants and it is full of tourists, and expats, this wouldn't be an issue if it weren't for the fact they treat the area and the staff abysmally, never even TRY to speak Portuguese and get loud and usually very drunk. I'm not saying that the behaviour in Barcelona against tourists and expats is OK but I can definitely see where they are coming from. Locals don't ask for much, just be respectful, and be nice and it is likely the sentiment will be returned. Also PLEASE learn a few phrases in the language of the coutry you go to, I promise you (at least in most of Portugal and to pretty much every place i've travelled to in the past) that people will really appreciate you trying, just learn the basics and to ask if they speak english in their language (don't assume they do even if most usually do these days) . Sorry for the really long essay lol but hearing the stuff my friends go through and also the things I just see around with servers that we have known for years really gets me riled up lol. Have fun wherever you go, just be mindful and you'll likely be totally fine.

The reason why Hawaii is so dependent on tourism is because of US colonialism so it was forced upon the native Hawaiians and not something they want. That is why we need to listen. They are the caretakers of the land and they are being pushed out, they can’t keep up with the waste and pollution in THEIR HOME. When a population is forced to depend on tourism, it is a form of colonialism.
