In this video PGA Pro Rick Shiels challenges PGA PRO Matt Fryer to a match at Townley Golf Club using ONLY a Titleist U500 one iron that has just 16° of loft. The one iron is regarded as the HARDEST golf club in the world to use. Players struggle hitting one irons due the fact they have very little loft. If you slice or hook your driver, shank or top your irons or simply duff your golf shots then a one iron would be near impossible to use.
Even the best players in the world like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and Jason Day do not use one irons in their whats in the bags.
See what Rick Shiels can shoot using just a 1 iron, Rick will have to use a one iron to chip with, putt with and even hit challenging bunker shots with. Rick Shiels could really find some awful situations to use the one iron. Rick Shiels and Matt Fryer also use the one iron to play a 909 yard par 8 hole they made up.

@@slappy8941 So the 7+ footers in basketball that have hardly any vertical and are slow as hell aren't athletes? Who would have thought that golfers don't train jumping. It being so useful and all.
On the one hand Pros are in elite athletic shape and conditioning.
On the other hand I’ve been able to play golf while smoking and drinking. I feel like that’s as unathletic as it gets TBH.
True story: my grandad gave me a bunch of clubs when I first started playing golf a few months ago. There wasn’t a putter so I assumed the 1 iron was the putter as it had a pretty flat face.
Needless to say my game has improved tremendously since I actually bought a putter

You'll be fine, a putting stroke with a long iron choked down is a great way to chip from just off the green with a long way to the pin. Chipping one in is always a thrill.

once I played a 1 iron .the lightning hit me 14 times. I put the final put from a stretcher and scored a 61.
The pure athleticism with the jump over the stream is simply astounding.
This was much harder than using a 7 iron for all your shots like you did in a previous video. Appreciate both of your sense of humour about it.
I wonder which the optimum single club would be for most? I think I'd favour the 7 despite the distance loss over a 5 or 6 iron.
That was awesome. This made me think of high school. My high school golf coach played a round with us once and only used a putter for the 9 holes. He won shooting 43.

@John Buick that's easily done actually. Whack it up the forward slope of the bunker and it should leave the bunker, it won't go far but it'll be out.

If you like them and can play with them then theres no need to change . i really get the urge to get my old clubs out . i have some Hippo Tour irons i may have to do a video against my Mizuno JPX 919
I played a round last weekend with my DCI 962b 1 iron being used on all driver holes to stay back of groups in front of me. The 962 1 iron is an awesome fairway finder, and happens to have the distinction of being the only non Mizuno iron in my bag :-D
Ive played a few holes with just a 7 iron before but never a 1 iron. Makes for interesting play!

I’ve got an old bladed ram 1 iron. Absolutely tiny club face but an absolute rocket ship if you catch it!
I have an old Ram 2 Iron. Wish I had the 1 iron too. They are real 1 and 2 irons. Not like this driver like looking thing they are using.
Ram are the best cheap clubs around. I still use them. My driver 3 and 5 wood

Reminds me of my high school days when I used to think I was decent. Had a 1 iron in the bag with balata balls.... I had no business with either.
Tee up a balata and give me a 1 and watch me prove the existence of other dimensions.
I'd say that was more of a driving iron that a 1 iron. Ironically (no pun intended) a bladed 1 iron would have made those bunker shots easier.

Up to 3 years ago I carried a 1987 Titleist Tour Blade 1 iron. Still bring it our now and then for giggles....but not in the cold weather.
Rick should raffle that 1 iron off ... some of us play irons and have no hybrids in the bag ...

My Titleist T-MB 2 iron is the best club in my bag, hitting what seems like every fairway with 265-285 yards of distance makes the game so much easier!
I have found practicing with my driving 2 iron off the ground has tremendously improved my striking with all clubs.

This is actually a great demonstration of something I think many, many golfers do not think of enough, Including me, and that is that there is tremendous energy in the club. If that idea was in the thought process when I am trying to hit I shouldn't over swing.

Jack Nicklaus has said in a few interviews that he loved his 1-iron bc it was so versatile. He said he could hit any shot of the course with it.

Glad we remember Seve who could do anything with one. Cañizares and even Pinero were great with a 1. Greatest shot I ever saw was Sandy Lyle at Sandwich.

Not an avid golfer but have been watching your videos for a few months now. Typically just hit the range for something to do. This seems like something me and my roommate would do though. Just having fun with a challenge (assuming nobody is behind us of course). Love this video.

I used to carry a Ping Eye 2 black spot 1 iron for off the tee and a 2 iron off the fairway. Loved them. Eventually I hit the 1 iron off the fairway. Loved the club.

Hi rick I started back in golf 20yrs ago and could not hit a driver more than 160 yards so I have a 1 iron ping eye 2 had it for 5yrs loved it

Used to have an old Spalding 2 iron that my friends finally shamed me to take out of my bag. (And I have gotten better with the fairway woods.) It was good for getting out from around the trees though.

I still remember how hard it was when my coach forced me to use only 7-iron or 9-iron for a golf round for the first time. You guys are going with the 1-iron...!!!

I have a few sets of clubs I've bought over the years. Still in use depending on the courses are 1 and 2 irons and all are much thinner than that sausage roll used in the video. Macgregor Golden Bear 1 and a Northwestern 1 from the mid 70s are great ball strikers. As for the 2 irons, the macgregor Tourney 2 from a set in 75, Mizuno mp33 2, Ping eye2 2 iron and a few Hogan Apex and redline 2 irons. All strike the ball really well. Growing up in the 70s and 80s, you learned to hit long irons.
For a while I had a 1 with a bigger head - like the one you guys were playing with - and I kept that in my bag instead of a second wood. I used my 'driving iron' from the tee on tight fairways, and as my second shot on par 5's. I could also putt pretty well with it, too, but I would have done much worse then either of you trying to chip or get out of the bunker with that club. I haven't used it in years - I just use a regular blade 1-iron when I carry one, which is infrequently. I was never tempted to use it in the rain, since I don't find it any harder to slice or snap-hook than any of my other irons.

"What was that?" "7, 8, 9 - it was a 9" finally something Rick has said when playing himself that I can relate to my own game. I mean I am using a full set of clubs and playing just the 1 hole, rather than combining 2 holes with a 1 iron but it's nice to hear regardless.
