My first contact with Miss Verrett's voice was in Sinaïde's cabaletta, at 3 meters from her. My first contact with her recorded voice was this aria, in the EMI studio conducted by Giulini. I could not stop listening to her, exactly like with Callas 3 years before. I don't know why. Sutherland and Price gave me great joy, mesmerized me with their consistent ease and vocal glamour, Caballé brought me a mysterious magic with a timbre full of jewels and Fleming with her creamy fruity timbre, easy technique. But there is an inner anger and freedom of the emission that is visceral and addictive, at least to me. This woman has a sharp, cutting sound, burning like lava, relentless, and yet capable of tenderness and vulnerability.
One of the greatest mezzo-sopranos of the 20th c. I saw/heard her twice in London, a concert performance of Samson & Delilah (RFH) and Don Carlos (ROH). She totally dominated the stage with her presence and voice. A long time ago but the memories remain as clear as day.
Maravillosa.
Now on coming across this video I know whom It's really worthwhile listening to every time you want to hear "O Don Fatale".Perfect interpretation, touching the strings of one's heart and soul. Deep, rich and boundless voice, unyielding to gravity.
Electrifying! I have played this video countless times in the past and again in this re-incarnation. Ms. Verrett's Eboli never loses her power! This and her simmering Delilah must be counted among my Desert Island videos.
OMG!! The best Eboli of all time!!!❤ expressive but with character, singing line, strength that the character needs, wide range and depth but with brilliance, respectful of the writing and score, perfect!
Interesting that I was only in my teens when I saw/heard her Eboli in London. That was many years ago yet her performance remains in my memory to this day. Abbado, at his best, was conducting, so I guess that also made a lasting impression. Over the years I’ve been to many opera performances, however only a few really stand out in the memory and that was certainly one of them.
Ms. Verrett was a wonderful artist and a lovely human being. I met her quite by accident in Siena Italy while she was teaching at the Chigiana. I was in Siena for a summer music festival and saw that she would be coaching a masterclass. We spoke briefly after her session, and she was so warm and friendly. She wrote an autobiography that is well worth reading. Lovely woman!
She was never given the same recognition and stature as other great singers like Troyanos and Cossotto, and we all know why. She was better than everyone and she wasn’t a narcissist.
She is amazing! Her technique is pretty flawless. In some of her other recordings she ends the phrases even more beautifully than here. I am in awe … people of the diaspora will get it… imagine how hard she had to work as a Black women to even get to this level and be broadcast in a TV recording at the time! It is so hard to be come an opera pro already … imagine the world making it even harder because of your skin. She has my deepest respect.
Just listened to Stignani in this and then this showed up as a recommendation. Wowza! How blessed are we to be able to listen to these two, my two favorite Ebolis, whenever we want and to our heart’s content?! Thank you!
Thanks, Don Carlos is one of my favorite operas and Shirley Verret is one of my favorite Eboli. I believe this video was filmed in King Philip II's office at the Escorial Palace. Do you know if it is excerpt from a whole film opera and who the other participants are?
Emily Greene is unaware of what it took in 1960's America for someone like Shirley Verrett to be asked to appear on television. It took 'better than most'.
My GOD what a gift to hear
Shirley ascends to the stratosphere of unreachable perfection ❤️
Superbe !!

Розкішна співачка і актриса! Яка палітра нюансів, емоцій!
If there's any singing better than this recorded anywhere, I haven't heard it.
*There are not enough superlatives to describe the magnificence of this performance! BRAVA!*
Wow! Overwhelmed with her powerful singing. I know she is fully respected but I don't think she is mentioned and praised enough today.

Превосходно!!!❤👏👏👏👏❤❤❤❤🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹😍
Shirley Verrett - my most beloved Eboli!❤❤❤
Eboli was made for her…for me she owns the role. I’ve never heard her bettered in it. A very great singer…her Lady Macbeth was kind of epic too. 🥰
This is Opera! Thank you
Her voice, her musicality, her artistic integrity, her passion - a perfect Eboli!
And Lady Macbeth!

Her Macbeth even more so

Explêndida. Brava. ❤
Magnífica !!! Que voz mas bella❤❤❤
Best rendition of this aria EVER
Obratsova surpasses it in power but Verett has more nuance. It is a toss up between the two. But Cossotto and Baltsa are even better acted.
"I ever heard" you ought to say, which would be closer to truth ,because ,in the end ,you know very little.
Simply spectacular.
Grandissima,emozionante

Wow! Stunning in her beauty of voice and blend of technique and passion. One of the best presentations I have heard!
Браво!!! 👏 👏 👏
Superbe ,comme toutce qu'elle a chanté!!
She was never given the same recognition and stature as other great singers like Troyanos and Cossotto, and we all know why. She was better than everyone and she wasn’t a narcissist.
Verrett had a very beautiful voice, but Cossotto had a better middle register and better diction.
Also Verrett made a fach switch.
COSSOTTO WAS A HORRIBLE MEZZO,
She is amazing! Her technique is pretty flawless. In some of her other recordings she ends the phrases even more beautifully than here. @@rpcslp139 well said. They can give all the excuses they liketheir own bigotry does little to change Shirley’s greatness and unique vocal power!
Amazing power & beauty
Truly beautiful and powerful. Thank you Onegin65.
Sublime
Truly stunning.
¡Enorme!

O God! Shirley!

Stignani was an excellent Eboli.
Shirley Verrett🌹❤️🌹
❤
素晴らしい! 今、初めて彼女を発見した。 今まで全然彼女の存在を知らなかった。
Thanks, Don Carlos is one of my favorite operas and Shirley Verret is one of my favorite Eboli. I believe this video was filmed in King Philip II's office at the Escorial Palace. Do you know if it is excerpt from a whole film opera and who the other participants are?
It's just a video clip for TV
@@onegin653 What a pity!
Over the top, not one of Shirley's best. She did better in other recordings.
Miss Greene, Pray tell of these other recordings. Thank you.
Emily Greene is unaware of what it took in 1960's America for someone like Shirley Verrett to be asked to appear on television. It took 'better than most'.
And yet you’ll never have the career she had.
What utter nonsense
Stupid comment. Yes, she has other brilliant recordings but that takes nothing away from this brilliant performance!
