I LOVE her voice!!!! I LOVE her passion! I LOVE this woman!! What a gift it is to be that great. If I could only be so lucky to come close to being this good, you couldn't tell me anything. I understand everyone wants to be a critic but you must admit, she is by far one of the best opera singers you will ever come across.
Funnily enough, I recently bought (well, it was free) the first record of Tebaldi/Del Monaco recording of Aida, and then when I played it, the programme from this performance of Aida fell out of the sleeve. This is from the Royal Opera House, Friday 8 October 1971. Radames was the great English tenor Charles Craig, Aida was Mina Krilovici, the King was Gwynne Howell, Ramfis was Joseph Rouleau and John Shaw was Amonasro.
I love seeing videos of Shirley Verrett. The level of her intensity cannot be conveyed by her marvelous voice alone. Watch the magnificent play of emotions on her face as the men's offstage chorus pronounces the judgement.
Verrett was brilliant in everything she did! She and Bumbry were the BEST in this role. Both were brilliant in their performances but in different ways. Verrett acted the role better than Bumbry, and had an intensity in her singing that was pure fire and revelatory. Bumbry was pure drama, superficial in actions but the voice was huge, full of expression, and powerful, cutting and crystal clear like a bell. Both sang this role to perfection with Simionato a close third in my opinion.
Aida who? LOLOL! I would not want to have been in the same production as La Verrett as Amneris without all my vocal and acting business correct, because you might just get your feelings hurt at curtain call. Peel the paint of the walls! Burn down the barn! EXTRAORDINARY!!!!!
You're right! I really don't like Aida... All she does is cry and beg for mercy. She hasn't got personality... I love Amneris instead, and specially THIS Amneris 🥰
@@esterbruno8604 I also love Amneris, but Aida, never forget, is an exiled. She was bereft of her Land and her crown, of her father and her people. She loves, but loves an enemy who she has to betray leaving him in the shame and the punishment of being a traitor. And so far on she comes back to die with him... She's a great character, no doubt on that.

But still, she forgets she's a princess too... She could do many more things that those she actually does. Maybe because of her conflicts, but she acts weakly, she acts like a slave too, and not like the Ethiopian princess.

I really know how sometimes we hate charachters for some reasons, but, if it will happen, please come back here when you'll realize what splendid heroine she is. According to her autobiography, she was set to record both Amneris and Azucena in the early 1970's; but she requested to record Carmen as well (as it had been one of her signature roles), and the recording company refused (as they had recently recorded Leontyne Price as Carmen), so she asked to be released from her contract and Grace Bumbry and Fiorenza Cossotto replaced her as Amneris and Azucena, respectively.
Unfortunately Shirley’s over acting is mostly straight out of the 19th c However in opera it’s the voice that counts and here she is unbeatable. I saw/heard her twice and in both instances I was in awe of her vocal perfection.
Verrett was a superstar but she was not so superb as the glorious Fiorenza Cossotto in Verdi.La Cossottina had a register that coverd alto, mezzo , and soprano.Verrett and Bumbry was more of mezzosopranos.Cossotto,Verrett and Bumbry superstars forever.

According to her autobiography, she was set to record both Amneris and Azucena in the early 1970's; but she requested to record Carmen as well (as it had been one of her signature roles), and the recording company refused (as they had recently recorded Leontyne Price as Carmen), so she asked to be released from her contract and Grace Bumbry and Fiorenza Cossotto replaced her as Amneris and Azucena, respectively.
She didn't request RCA to record Carmen, she demanded it. After she walked away her recording career suffered, as she admitted in her memoir.
