One of the things that made these two so perfect for each other was their lack of a social life. Scully didn't have much and Mulder even less. It was cute in season 1 how Mulder seems embarrassed that Scully might have found his video collection.

And they were both very attractive and likeable people. It was bizarre but not unheard of.
The irony was that Mulder was a dropdead handsome man who had zero social life. His work trumped everything and it's to the writers credit that they had Scully play along with this as an endearing flaw in his character. Today this would not happen. We were lucky to have so many good years of The X Files. TV now is garbage.

I'd like to add that David Duchovny played a character that narrated soft porn erotic stories in Zalman King's Red Shoe Diaries before he did the X Files. LOL. Never come across anything like that and I know his work. Actually, it's not a reference to how Mulder might die, it's how Clyde Bruckman dies in the episode.
