Training Your Labrador Retriever Puppy Part One

  • In this video, I give some recommendations concerning the proper way to start training a Labrador Retriever. Notice how calm and attentive this eleven week old puppy remains while I film. Too often, novice trainers fail to realize the importance of developing proper work ethic and impulse control during the imprinting stage. I promise that if you will hold your pups to a high standard when they are young, it will make the whole process as easy as buttering bread! These comments are proof that people don't listen. These aren't treats he's giving this puppy...in fact he went on about a 90 second trail about how you should NOT use tons of treats to train your puppy. What he's using is the puppy's regular food. About half of his daily food. In fact if you're using any amount of training treats to train your puppy, you're feeding yours more than he's feeding this one. I stole this technique from him, and it worked beautifully with my black lab puppy. I also would mix in a few actual training treats as well, just because. A little advice-before you write a comment that is going to make yourself look like you have the cognitive ability of a 5 year old, you might wanna make sure you're assessment of what's going on is accurate.

@@StonnieDennis I want to thank you for making these videos! you were the first video that popped up when I googled how to train your lab puppy. and I'm so glad you were the first one to pop up! my dog storm is 2 years old now and I have people coming to me and asking where did you train her! And I just smile and I say I've watched a handful of videos from this man name stonnin Dennis you should look him up. people are amazed of how storm is so well-trained! I don't need a leash to walk her which I do keep her on just in case because I don't trust other people's dogs. Don't get me wrong she's still young much more she needs to learn. but goddamn if it wasn't for your videos I don't think storm would be the dog she is today!

Mcmillian is incredible! We watch his show lucky dog and can't believe what a selfless helping person he is. The book ruclips.net/user/postUgkxfKlzfzw0sMZ_RgZNzMeOPu6d4b5i5XWl has his training methods from both the show and new tricks i had not heard until i got the book. Simple dog psychology and pointers to make the methods stick. Great insight to the thinking of dogs. There is so much more we know now about our dogs. Fear in training no longer apply. I cannot say enough about this book and it's author.

I must say, we got our 7 week old lab and today is day 4th with her and this technique has worked wonders. I started watching the series a few weeks prior and now I’m just going back through to make sure I didn’t miss anything. She’s already following commands such as sit, down, come and potty. Thanks for taking the time and teaching us a good way to work with our lab puppies.

God, i have a lil 3 months old Labrador, I've started this method 3 hours ago and, by feeding him only when he succeeds and listens to me, he seems to already understand "Sit" and "Up" ! Like, in 3 hours, already understanding that ! That is awesome ! Thank you a lot !
I will try to make him understand when I wave my hand he has to do a certain thing.

But this guy actually understands why you should give them treats. I had a dog like that so I sympathize, always said she was a major pain in the *** but she was my dog and I loved her. I used to train horses, even got my cats to do "tricks, " but I gave up trying to teach this dog anything. She wouldn't lead, wouldn't come, wouldn't fetch or share toys, respond to praise or treats. She was super dominant (G. Shepherd, Sharpei, pitbull mix!) and was 2-1/2 when I got her from Humane Society. I finally gave up and just enjoyed her for what she was---super loyal, slobbery kisser, and extraordinary guard dog. The price she paid was that we couldn't go for walks, to the dogpark, or even to the vet. She died a few months ago an extremely happy dog but had cancer at 11 yrs old.

I trained my 7 week old using a ball. Trained her off leash. The ball was a great motivator.

Hey Stonnie..LOVE your videos. I trained a lab over 14 years ago...It WAS SO HARD!!!! I just got a new lab puppy and I discovered you! PRAISE GOD!!! His training is going so simply and beautifully. THANK YOU!!!
and I have a question. What leash are you using...brand, size? I just received a An English slip leash today..it seems SO BIG compared to what you have and for my puppy. THANK YOU for your response.

I adopted a 3 year old brown labrador and hes the greatest. I slowly got the hang of training using clickers treats and patience. He improved so much over a short span of time and learned alot of behaviours thats expected from dogs, and even went beyond doing tricks like standing on back legs or rolling over.
But using food for training was not very effective. It seemed as he saw the daily food as FOOD, and would allways be too stressed to train the tricks we wanted using food as treat. And i did try it while he just ate, and after exersize aswell, so he was drained and not starving. Im no professional but using seperate treats, purchased or sosage(i know high in salt, so in small doses) is what works best for us.
I do like the thought behind it tho, and if i ever get a pup i will definetly try it out. Great video btw, i like your theories

I’ve not had a dog since 2014 and I’ve moved houses twice since 2015 so getting a dog hasn’t really been easy but I’ve eventually convinced myself to get one and I’m waiting until later in the year and I’m trying to decide between a Black Lab or Chocolate but I want to be able to train it and this has helped to get an idea on how to do it so thanks 👍🏻

Most choc are show/english lab. black can be both working/field/american or show/English.
Personally i’d go for any colour over choc. Get from hip/elbow scored health tested parents if a breeder has multi generations of the dog to see and is picky who they sell to you are on the right track

I'm bringing home a little black lab girl next weekend, on the 25th. I'm going to eat sleep and breathe this series!! I got my last dog when I was young and dumb, and even though she was a fantastic family dog, we did NOT train her the way we should have initially. She was 15 when we had to put her down and I miss her terribly. Anyway, I'm sooo determined not screw up the training with this one!

This is great! A couple questions - do you train once a day or during each feeding session (three times a day)? do you use the first 50% on training, and then let him eat the remaining out of the bow, or vice versa? Also, this is part one but I noticed your lab is 11 weeks, is it ok to use this method at 8 weeks?

@Stonnie Dennis this is really great advice. My wife and I just got a lab who is 8 weeks old. We have had him for 5 days and we are struggling to get him to listen. How often should you do this exercise?
