    I run this mech with 2 heavy rifles and 2 AC5-BF. The AC5's are a constant fire, remove small vehicles/VTOL/turrets and strip armor application while the heavy rifles are for finishing the job the AC5's start. It's a really nice combination backed up by a pair of higher end Artemis SRM4's.

      @@thetrustysidekick3013 It is hurt from the degree it sucks at ranged combat, though. There is a niche for it as a lead element in a medium-speed lance or city-fighting, but in a true assault lance, it just doesn´t carry its weight. The GHE solves some of the problems, with the double PPC. But all the Mechs which need to close distance in an environment regardless of cover tend to be taken out very quickly by concentrated fire.
      The other thing is that, in this game, I´m not a big fan of weapons you need to stay on target with, but that may be my personal preference.

    The Heavy rifles are a head shot weapon. I think two tier 4 or 5 heavy rifles can head shot just about anything within optimal range with some damage increase quirks.
    Before quirks a tier 4 heavy rifle has 21.6 damage, and a max armor king crab can have at most 45 head health. That means two +5% damage quirks should net you around 23 damage with is a total of 46 for two rifles which is an instant kill. Also the AI tends to not run max armor, and it seems to like around 18 or head armor. 18 head armor with 15 structure is only 33hp, and no built in quirk other than headshot immunity will save it. This is even more true if you have tier 5 heavy rifles, and honestly 4 tier 5 heavy rifles with damage increase quirks can probably drill through an AI's medium CT, thanks to the AI tending to run armor at like half to two thirds.
    Doing the two rifles in each claw targeting the head for instant kills. In theory this could melt lances long before they can even damage you. Head shots in this game are far easier than in MWO thanks to much larger head hitboxes and very predictable movements from the ai.
    The concept is to use all 4 to alpha from outside of optimal range, and then fire in groups of two within optimal range. In theory this could result in two dead 100 ton assaults every 10 or so seconds. To average 5 combat seconds per dead 100 tonner is good even for a brawler.
    However this is a theoretical case of perfect aim at 700+ meters.

    The reason you couldn't see any AC/20s in the loadout screen is that little checkbox "Valid Only" next to the Inventory and Market view tabs. Since the KK does not have any Large Ballistic slots, this checkbox filtered out all Large Ballistic weapons, like the AC20.

    Large Rifles are excellent early-game shoulder weapons for an AI shadowhawk. AI doesn't take proper advantage of rapid fire anyway, so something that hits like a truck and has a huge range but doesn't fire so often is ideal for AI. I usually take 2 shadowhawks early game because only the cheap replaceable medium lasers are exposed to being disarmed: The ballistic hardpoint is torso.
    And the fact that the heavy rifles are light lets you pack more into the missile hardpoints.

      Nah, just aim better. If you can one shot a heavy mech CT with four heavy rifles, you ain't gonna give one fuck about DPS or projectile speed (which frankly is faster on a heavy rifle than you're implying here).
      Heavy rifles are basically the get gud of MW5, and I love the rage over them lol.

  • @radiac6818
    @radiac6818 3 года назад +8

    The thing is, the heat generated by the Heavy Rifle is a lot, but if you multiply that heat per shot times the rate of fire, you get a number that's actually lower than the AC/20 using a similar formula. So, over time, they generate less heat, if they're in constant use. Big guns generally don't get used continuously though, so the fact that the Heavy Rifles dump more heat on you right when you shoot it is the main problem. That and the looong reload time. But then the long reload time mitigates the heat issues to some extent, as long as you're not firing PPCs and whatnot in the long wait time while reloading. I think as long as you take carefully curated center-torso and head shots with the Heavy Rifles, they're effective. I wouldn't try to hit a Flea with them though. But then I use a HOTAS, not the mouse, to aim and move. Also, if you don't like risking the good Gauss Rifles on the lancemate mechs, just put the Heavy Rifles on there instead. AI pilots generally don't fire fast enough to overheat in the first place, and the corsair only mounts two.

    Regarding the Corsair and lost Gauss Rifles: The side torso is an extreme damage magnet even when I pilot it myself. It tends to almost always concentrate incoming damage there, so much more than comparable Mechs. In fact, that put it out of my primary lance.

    I don't know if it's been said yet, but you don't want to alpha strike your heavy rifles, you want to chainfire them and AIM FOR HEADS. You get way more salvage and kill assault mechs faster because they tend to have fat heads. I prefer heavy rifles over any AC or gauss and the saved weight means more ammo/cooling.

      he said anyways that he didnt enjoy them to much, the constant shuting down or alternatively having to groupfire 2/2 and spread all that dmg over half the enemy mech just doesnt seem to viable tbh. they might be for earlier game, when u dont have tonage yet to run AC20 or only have 1 med cannon hardpoint, but for late game... nah to many drawbacks, what good does longer range do u, if u cant make use of it because enemys will be in close range before u can shoot a 2nd time

      @kingkuma4112 2 года назад

      Okay yes your points about overheating and accuracy are absolutely valid but good lord the absolute RUSH you get when instantly coring a quickdraw or just straight up ripping the RT off an atlas in one shot makes me prefer firing all four guns at once. Sure, it's not 100% optimal, but to me it's much more _cool._ it's like the planet itself shakes when you shoot them. And on the overheating after four shots, well, six heavy rifle hits to the CT can core any mech in the game, so if you can reliably nail CTs those four shots are all you need, although I've found if you want to go quad HR it's best you dont put other guns on and instead devote that to as many heatsinks as you can fit

    • @LemurMaster
      @LemurMaster 2 года назад

Still cant beat a quad slug ac/10 build in terms of raw dps, but as far as opening volleys go it's hard to top. If I'm up against something like a light or otherwise hard to hit mech I basically go tell whatever pilot is in my lrm vomit stalker or quad LL king crab to deal with it and that does the job 90% of the time. My main role is just going after whatever I feel the biggest potential danger is in the general area and dealing enough damage to it before it becomes a problem. Weapons in MW5 don't have perfect convergence every time like in MWO, there's some minor inaccuracy and you'll get more drift leading a target since the aimpoint is set where you're aiming, not at your target's distance. I've had dual gauss shots that just take both arms off of a spider, or nail two different torsos, and Rifles are even worse about it.

      My drop partner says it's due to spaghetti code and ghost heat. When you fire 3 or more of the same weapon, PGI hits you with an extra heat penalty on top of the base heat.
      Also, hitting the fire input before a weapon fully reloads aka holding down the fire button, appears to register the reloading weapon as an extra weapon and adds the heat penalty when it actually fires. There is also another ghost heat penalty when you have latency issues if you drop with other people.

    The last mission with the AC/10s shows one of the worst problems that I have with MW5 vs MWO, the weapon convergence is horrible since the effective weapon velocities are so much lower in this game. there were several shots he took that should have nailed the target, but since his lead pulled him off the target the convergence adjustment of the arms shifted to far past the range his target was actually at, making the shots miss/not hit pinpoint. I wish the convergence range adjustment was smarter about how it switches, right now it just shifts on a scan line of your targeting reticle, but it really should adjust based on the nearest target to your reticle.

    I think the 4x heavy rifles are just meme build.. imo the 4x uac 5s with srms is the best build on the carapace. Its fun and shreds, applicable too in warzone to farm for c-bills.
    The Annihilator with 4x solid slugs with 7 small lasers or 4 MLs also shreds. I used 2-3 alphas with the 7 SLs can also delete mechs fast and single single alpha on lights.
    Sure i mean 4x heavy rifles hit hard and can delate but the rate of fire is just too slow for my taste. 4x solid slugs deletes way faster.. nice episode though! Keep it up! 🍻

    With the lack of cooling the DPS on the AC-10 build was slower than the pure Alpha strike damage of the Heavy Rifles. Plus they killed quicker

    The sentiment that the progression of the game is flawed I agree with. I was a tabletop BattleTech and MechWarrior player and If you followed the rule sets the game is very much about resource management and trying to squeeze out every C Bill. Now having said that, I pulled the trigger on buying this game as It looks a whole lot of fun if you look at it in an alternative BattleTech universe view. Hoping that a mod will be released to change that balance.

    I like to run my king crab with 2 AC5 BF's, 2 heavy rifles and 2 SRM 6' all on chain fire. I usually keep the pressure up with the AC5s and alternate shredding them with heavy rifles and SRMs.

    I much prefer heavy rifles to the hyper assault Gauss. They only do 1 heat per shot, but they aslo do continuous fire. And I overheated myself into oblivion. I'm using the Pirate Tech mod. The Pirate RAC/5's are really nice!

    Stupid question, how can I put the 6 white squares on the front for the weapon reload "warning"?. And the other thing, how can I switch to the different targets that fast? O.O, in my game I have to aim to the mech like 5 seconds before it's shown as target. O.O

  • @mdoule
    @mdoule 3 года назад

    I like Heavy rifle as a support weapon, when you have only one medium balistic slot and some large energy/missile weapons as primary. They are good at opening enemies at long range or deleting small mechs. Also mech legs - especialy WArhammers.
    But I would never use them in alpha strike, chain fire gives you chance to start cooling and fix aim.
    btw for uAC/5 build one of fun mech is hero Cataphrax - IM i think. 3 uac5, some backup weapons, good speed. Too bad these mechs come late in game, but even diff 100 is not a big problem, unless you are using mod for more intense warzones :)

    I run 4 heavy rifles and a LRM 15 on King Crab for fliers and have zero issues with heat. Not every shot has to be an alpha strike your bias came through a bit there. Admittedly LBX SLD is probably going to be the most efficient build overall but heavy rifles are more than viable. AC20 levels of firepower in a medium slot what's not to like. The biggest issue is only 12 rounds in the ammo.

    I’ve used rifles, but with the mechs I’m stuck with, not viable, no extra slots for others but some wimpy lasers. And the arm kept getting wrecked, losing them. So now I salvage or buy good ones, and just saving them for better mechs. And I’m guessing I need to progress the campaign more to get bigger tonnage limits?

    Man I bet that King crab would make a fun and balanced ballistic build if you swapped out both those SRM6s and X2 Heavy rifles for X2 of those tier 4 AC10 Burst fires 29:30 some extra AC10 ammo and if possible another heat sink or two. You can use the X2 Heavy Rifles for targets around 800m and the AC10 Burstfire and Heavy Rifles for any target within 500M It looked like you could probably make shots easily at 100-200 meters with the Heavy rifles so despite being long range weapons the rifles can still be initial pinpoint burst damage on top of your AC10s or a finishing blow after stripping the armor down with dual AC10 burst fire dakka if you ever got into a brawl unwillingly.

    I find that the heavy rifles are a butter weapon. Not great on their own but good to spice something up. For instance, a MAD-3R running 2x er large SB, 2x med pulse, and a heavy rifle has netted me some pretty fun games. Bur I don't think I'd boat this weapon system.

    I rather use a couple UAC20's in this type of situation. Rifles are basically poor man AC's after-all :) Unless the game has Hellstorm Artillery, then it can be pretty useful, lol (RogueTech thing).

    Maybe your need two heavy rifles for range and two AC20s for close range
