Many years ago I came across an old 78 rpm recording of this song, on the Edison label by Vernon Dalhart, tenor. It’s about a half inch thick. It’s believed to be the first million selling recording. Great performance of a great song.

Nice. Sounds like this tune was recycled in the song MTA. Other than MTA's chorus ("did he ever return, no, he never returned...) it sounds the same to me. Great job, as always!

You are correct, the turn for both " Old '97" and MTA come from an older song, "The Ship That Never Returned", written by Henry Clay Work in 1865.
Here's the chorus, which MTA follows very closely:
Did she never return? She never returned,
Her fate, it is yet unlearned,
Though for years and years there were fond ones watching
Yet the ship she never returned.
