    Mark my name is Russ I'm a drummer and bassist from Tacoma, I just wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to thank you for being such a huge and influential part of my teenage and young adult life. Out of all the Melvins albums my absolute favorites were during your tenure as bassist. In particular Stoner Witch and Stag🤘You sir are an absolute legend! The way you approached the bass and the music you helped create impacted my life and as a musician in many positive ways. So once again thank you

    WOW! This is going to be so freakin cool to watch! I'm less than 3 minutes in and I paused to type this message.
    It was MAMMOTH Records that was involved, which I always thought was weird because they were based out of Carrboro, NC, which is where I first saw the Melvins at a place called the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro on Sunday September 22, 1996.
    It was just you guys and you played three sets (as you probably remember).
    Anyway, that was a great night and that was the night I went back around to the front of the building as soon as the show was over and got to talk to Buzz for about five minutes alone outside the front of the venue.
    It was an awesome experience for a 15-year-old.

      Thanks for the reminder...I knew it was something beginning with M ! Glad you have a good memory of that. Concerts I saw as a 15 year old have stayed with me also. I'm going to talk about more of them. Uriah Heep/Grand Funk/ZZ Top etc.

    Absolutely loving your videos Mark! Thanks for sharing all your memories and stuff. Stag was the current Melvins album when I first discovered the band and maybe I’m biased as result but to me it’s always been the absolute best introductory album to the band. It is incredibly varied stylistically, has some of the most popular songs, flows great, and is just such a classic. Wondering if you’re familiar with the Amrep singles 1-12 track “Fast Forward”? It sounds like a tape recording related to the second half of Skin Horse.

      I'm familiar with those. I gave my copy of all 12 to the drummer that played on my record The Silent Treatment. I'll have to refresh, but I've have a couple of requests to run through those. I'll get to them at some point. Thanks for watching !

    Mark, loving this as I have been viewing it non chronologically. A random short of yours will pop up. Then I want to learn about this song. Or this one. I admit this one was was a hard listen after Stoner Witch, it lied flat for years. Then I popped a CD in after work, after The Bit, the whole thing just pounded me like it hadn't in years. I was finally getting it around 2018 upon revisiting it.
    It's great that you said the new guy came in and didn't like the band. Somehow we knew that's exactly what Buzz wanted.
    I bought my friend a vinyl copy.

      I actually liked Stag better when I listened again after a long time for these videos, so I know what you mean...there are some really nice sounds on it and the whole thing was one of those momentary collaborations that every once in a while produces something timeless. It's reputation seems to improve over time and it was a cool thing to be a part of. Thanks for watching !

    One of my favorite records ever.I listened to this endlessly at home and on a walkman when I was in high school. Was always bummed that it got crammed on one vinyl record as it was originally released on Atlantic. So it s great that now there is this two record rerelease on Third Man Records. Sounds much better, bigger and more adequate for the material. Really interesting to hear you talk about this! Cheers from Munich, Germany!

    The more experimental side of the album are among my most favorites: Goggles, Sterilized, and Lacrimosa.
    Goggles sounds like it's underwater, I love the production! The whole thing (vocals, drums etc) sounds 'gurgly' or 'bubbly'. I always thought that's why it was called "Goggles", haha. That bass line is killer!
    Sterilized sounds menacing! Love it!

    • @MarkDeutrom
      @MarkDeutrom  Год назад

      Thanks ! I thinks Goggles might be a reference to Rob Zombie wearing goggles all the time. Sterilized is definitely murky and is some kind of live recording with extra sauce.

    I remember having to buy Stag from Tower Records in Glasgow via mail order, Melvins albums seemed to be quite hard to get hold of in the UK back then. I saw you play at Bradford Rio’s in November 1996 and had to camp on a hill as we had no way to get home till the morning, great days! Any way you should do a tutorial for The Bit bass line as I always wondered what you were doing/playing on the scraping verse bits.

    I'm not trying to spam your comments Mr. Deutrom, but I just thought you/others might find this kind of interesting. I don't really get the Disney part myself, but whatever, I guess good for the founder:
    Mammoth Records was founded by Jay Faires in 1989 in Carrboro, North Carolina. One of the most premiere independent record labels of the 1990s, Its roster featured diverse talent as Antenna, Blake Babies, Chainsaw Kittens, Dash Rip Rock, Dillon Fence, Frente!, Fun-Da-Mental, Fu Manchu, Jason & the Scorchers, Joe Henry, Juliana Hatfield, Kill Creek, Machines of Loving Grace, The Bats, The Melvins, My Friend Steve, Seven Mary Three, Squirrel Nut Zippers, The Sidewinders, Vanilla Trainwreck, and Victoria Williams.
    The label went from a stand-alone company to being a part of a joint venture with Atlantic Records in 1993. The label hit the open market again in 1997. Faires sold Mammoth Records to The Walt Disney Company in 1998. Mammoth Records was folded into Hollywood Records in 2003.

    I'm so happy to have found your channel today Mark! Bassist of one of my favorite bands of all time! I'm curious, what is the correct bass tuning on Melvin's songs. Is it standard D, or something else?

    • @MarkDeutrom
      @MarkDeutrom  Год назад +1

      Thanks for finding this ! Plenty of atmospheres and assorted chewy centers on this channel. I think some of the tuning was a 'Drop D" which is only the E string dropped down a whole step to D. Not every tune was in drop D but a few were. Pitch was A440.

      @@MarkDeutrom It's interesting you and Lori Black were both in Clown Ally. I just heard them for the first time by watching your channel. It's so cool to see two Melvin's bassists together on stage pre Melvin's.
      One thing that struck me instantly when I hear Clown Ally for the first time is I thought of the Melvin's song, Dr. Geek, from Hostile Ambient Takeover. I wonder if that song was influenced by Clown Ally? That was my first impression.
