“Buck Owens” is probably my favorite Melvins song of all time. If not my favorite, def in my top 3.
It's not bad for 3 white guys !
Sterilized>Lacrimosa>Skin Horse is one of the most epic sequences in the entire Melvins album catalog. WOW- RELEASE THAT TEN MINUTE LACRIMOSA PLEASE! All the CD bonus tracks were also released on the Interstellar Overdrive 10", and then later included on Electroretard. Another great video!
Thanks for the info...I didn't know that. Extended Lacrimosa will probably be only at my Patreon page. If you like hidden and unreleased secret stuff please consider subscribing !
The alternative version of Tipping The Lion, and Instellar Overdrive were also released on "Electroretard". Loved your tenure in the band!
Right ! Only found that out recently. Thanks for being here.
@@MarkDeutrom Thank you for putting all that stuff online. It s really interesting for a nerd like me🙃
It’s the Melvins’ White Album for better or for worse. Anyone watching Mark’s videos love his extensive contributions to the songs and it’s because of Mark that this era of the band is so memorable. Buzz and Dale together with other bassists have made really good songs, but never with the same level of reckless abandon as they did with Mark. The Bootlicker, Maggot, and Crybaby records somewhat reach similar grounds but it’s not the same. Going forward they really dialed in the hard rock metal thing and have rarely deviated from it.
Everything contributes to the end result, and that was a pretty good combination of factors for that particular time. Thanks for your thoughts.
Proud to be one of 110 likes. One of the 100 important albums I of my life.
Thanks for being here.
I was eagerly waiating the release of Stag and was visiting Berlin at the time. Bought the CD but could not play it until I got home a week later. Pure agony. Love the album - so nice to hear you speak about it. Love from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
Thanks ! Always enjoyed our shows in the Netherlands.
We need the 10 min version of LACRIMOSA
Wow, so glad to have lived long enough to enjoy your insights into my favorite age of music! I got you to forge Lori's signature on a vinyl copy of Bullhead back in the late 90s when you guys did a quick show at my local record store, it was great! Buzz played bass and you did vocals and guitar, and Dale was playing a cheesy drum set that was like the store owner's brother's or something, good times! Pretty sure it was the HELMET MELVINS TODAY IS THE DAY tour but I'm also old and not remember so well..
I know you guys played ther blue note in colombia MO the night before and Misissippi nights in STL that night, Vintage Vinyl was the record store, still open too!
I remember the lolapalooza tour and my friend says oh no looks like Mark D got cancer or something but I had seen the COWS and knew it was Kevin Rutmanis, Ol swivel hips! Haha you always rocked and thanks again for making these videos! Still have the CD case to STAG with the hype sticker on the front from almost 30 years ago! the disc has been replaced at least 3 times though heh
Stay cool!
Thanks for the cool memories and also for watching ! I remember signing for Lori, Joe, Matt, and even Abe Lincoln on occasion ! The record store gigs were fun and strange. I think I have one on my Melvins playist here on my channel. Consider joining my patreon page and you can hear what my band sounds like right now, among other things ! www.patreon.com/markdeutrom
Thanks for this insight into Stag! This album is amazing - it more than stands the test of time!!!!
Thanks for watching. It still sounds pretty good and managed to avoid become dated. I'll see what I think when I revisit it in 25 years !
Thanks Mark for all the insights, I love Stag. The 'disjointed' feel is kind of what lends this album its distinct personality in the Melvins' catalogue, I feel. It's Melvins' White Album.
Thanks for the great compliment ! I love the white album but Rocky Racoon will always remain problematic until I do a cover that is...Stag is a unique record that has aged well.
Great video, needless to say, but also; your record shelving is beautiful.
Thanks for watching ! I am actually going through my entire record collection at the moment and writing about every record, and also providing samples and photos at my patreon page. I'll be giving free access to some posts for every week in August so keep an eye out for that by subscribng to my channel.
Looking forward to Prick and Honky.
They are on the list !
Prick is so underrated!
If Stag is their White Album, Prick is Their Satanic Majesties Request.
LOVE BERTHAS lol. one of my favorites actually. Is that Buzz singing?
I believe it is.
Thanks so much for doing these. I really enjoyed and appreciated the knowledge. More please.
Thanks for watching ! There is a lot to get through, so stay tuned.
Thanks! Stag is one of the 90's albums that I listen to over and over again, it blew my mind I had it on my headphones for the first time in teenage years, when hip-hop and techno was my cup of tea back then. Imho that record is the perfect bridge between Stoner Witch and Honky.
I listened mainly on headphones when I was preparing for this... it is a really great headphone record, and every track has it's own atmosphere and density. Thanks for watching !
@@MarkDeutrom I got the same feeling about this as a great headphone record :D It's also cinematic because of infinity of effects mixed with clean playing, this is what keeps me listening to this record all overr, it's always fresh.
Damn I love this album so much
After all this time, I think it's still a pretty good record !
Mark, I saw the Melivns many times when you were in the band. While I really like all the eras of their music, the records from your tenure are special to me. Fucking hell, Stag is an amazing work.
Hey thanks ! I appreciate that. We did some pretty good work that still holds up, and has it's own unique place. I might even like Stag better now then I did back then.
BUCK OWENS !!!🌈🫀👽
You guys definitely played Interstellar Overdrive live- I was there when you opened with it during the tour with Tool in 1997. Thanks to you once again for doing this & look forward to more great insight into a stellar musical career!
Thanks for the info and also for watching. I'll get to some of my own records eventually.
i wasnt aware of this dude!!! damn!!! i'll be helping as much as i can :)
Thanks for watching ! I appreciate your interest and support !
Suggestion - video about Melvins’s experience as opener for Rush. Was an odd billing.
Great idea ! It's already on my list. Thanks.
Thanks again for making all of your videos, they are really great for us listeners!
I stopped the video and wanted to leave this comment, because just last night I was talking with some friends and we were talking about the wildest shows we had ever been to with the wildest crowds.
I've seen a lot of shows, everything from Tori Amos to GWAR and some of the craziest have been Slayer. And also Rage Against the Machine and The Ramones, those were really rowdy crowds as well.
BUT the wildest crowd I was in during a show was DEFINITELY a Melvins/Helmet show in 1997 at the old Ziggy's in Winston Salem, NC.
When Helmet came on the place just went bonkers.
I wasn't even a Helmet fan, I just went to see you guys, so I was completely not expecting everyone to go so crazy.
It was really, really crazy and I've never seen such a rowdy crowd.
I can say that I don't remember that particular crowd being nasty to you guys that night so that's a good thing.
Thanks for watching ! The Helmet audience was absolutely challenging. We started making the shows weirder, inviting people up on stage to play with the band, quiz show scenarios etc. At one show someone came up to me and demanded his money back. I tried to convince him he had seen a special show but he wasn't going for it. In the end I gave him $20 and said Adios.
Love this record, would be cool to see you break parts down with a bass or guitar
Thanks ! I'd have to relearn anything I would do that with since it's been so long but I appreciate the suggestion.
I believe the alt version of Tipping the Lion and Interstellar Overdrive also appeared on Electroretard which was a odds and ends comp on Man’s Ruin I think. Edit: just saw comment below 😂.
I wasn't aware...thanks for that and also for watching.
Fantastic record, one of the Melvins’ best.
Do you still talk to buzz and Dale?
It's pretty good ! Thanks for watching.
Skin Horse might be my favorite Melvins track of all time!
It's a good one !
Mark, you asked, so...I have a 10" purple transparent vinyl that came out on Man's Ruin Records in '96 or '97. The front cover says MELVINS Interstellar Overdrive over a blurry photo of a Black light bulb.
The back cover lists the tracks as:
1. Interstellar Overdrive (All of side A)
2. Bar X the rocking M/Tipping the Lion B
The cover folds out into a 20"x10" gatefold which has black and white art of Japanese Taiko drummers and Production/Engineer/songwriting and performer credits.
The sticker on one side is a fuchsia Melvins logo over a 5 pointed star, the other side has an image of a cat with a crucifix between it's eyes.
I don't see the date anywhere on the gatefold or vinyl, but, I bought this in Toronto and I left there originally in '96, and then permanently in '97. I hope you get a copy of this record for your collection.
P.S. That B take of Tipping the Lion has always been a favorite, the bass tone is incredible.
Also, I did see you guys play Interstellar Overdrive live opening for HELMET around the same time.
@@livefromtheskycabin1043 Hey Thanks for that. I did actually have that original Man's Ruin 10" but I gave it away a long time ago as it sounds like you did.... The B take of "Tipping" does sound like a Big Cheese box. Nothing grinds like that does, especially for bass.
@@MarkDeutrom I still have my copy!
Do you happen to remember what recording of Requiem you sampled on Lacrimosa? The composer/CD? Great video, thanks for the insight!
It's been a while but it was Mozart, either Schreier/Dresden, Hogwood/Academy of Ancient Music or Davis/BBCSO. Those were the versions I owned at the time. Thanks for watching !
@@MarkDeutrom ha, I meant conductor, not composer! My pleasure to watch, Stag was the album that got me into the Melvins
Do you remember which city/state in Australia you recorded the wind?
On the upper floor of some hotel in Sydney.
that Sterilized story is great, though I believe that habit of revenge against aggressive audiences continued on, i remember hearing something about an incredibly slow cover of The Green Manilishi at a concert where someone hit Crover in the head with something.
That might have been after me. I did get hit with a big piece of flooring at the NIN Dallas show. It was unpleasant.
@@MarkDeutrom Jesus, the lengths people will go. Incredibly stupid.
Doesn't have much to say about Dale's contributions or drumming in general
I will probably do a video about Dale in particular at some point. Meanwhile, here's a video I did about 5 drummers you may not have heard of : ruclips.net/video/7Z3wczHGvUg/видео.htmlsi=H03XYKHJcQG7nWrV
Thanks for watching !
Buck Owens is the best track on the album
Everyone has a different favorite it seems....the sign of a good record !
