  • There are a few kayaks that are part of the ‪@FeelfreeKayaks‬ family of brands that have the rudder cables below the handle in the stern of the kayak. In order to successfully add a Bixpy to the rudder area of these kayaks, you will have to perform a DIY install. This will involve cutting the Beaver Tail rudder some and mounting the ‪@Bixpy‬ J-2 or K-1 directly to the rudder.
Templates for these motors can be found here: bixpy.com/diy-...
Purchase a Bixpy for yourself and see how much fun you can have: bixpy.com/jpin...

Jonathan i really enjoy the Bixpy installs, and different rudder setups. I purchased my 2023, Oldtown Sportsman 120 Pdl this year. I also upgraded to the complete J2 PP-768 Motor and battery kit. I did keep a small spare j2 battery. The pp-768 is heavier, so I'm working where i want it. This is my 3rd boat in 5 years. I've always ran my Bixpy's. I purchased the gravity rudder kit, so i can mount my pulley system, to a cleet. I feel the Bixpys perform better, on the stern, on a 12ft kayak. Keep them coming. Great info, and installs bro. 🛶 💯 🎣

Thank you so much. I appreciate it. I bet the Sportsman is a great kayak to fish out of. It has some really great features. The PP-768 is a heavy battery, but it lasts a very long time. I love mine. I agree with you, I have mounted the Bixpy to many different locations, but I feel like the stern mounts are the best. Thanks again! 🎣

Per your instructions, I finally got the J2 installed on my beaver tail. Took it out yesterday for the first test run and everything went perfectly. I couldn't wipe the grin off my face. It's still pretty cold here in Ky so I was only out for a couple hours. I only weigh 160lbs. and packed lightly, but still was reaching 5.5 mph on top speed. Thanks again for your video! Happy Yakin!

That is awesome to hear. I am glad that it all worked out for you. The Beaver Tail is a great rudder and even if you don't want the motor on it at times, the rudder is still going to function just fine. It is still cold here in VA too, but I will be out there soon. I have some new videos that I am wanting to put out there. I love the top speed you got. Take care.

Thanks for the video. I picked up a barely used 11.5 and the K1 is mounted on the pod, and the large battery was in the front hatch. On my initial trip I had about an inch of water at the front scuppers, obviously riding too low. I'm moving the battery to be back today. I'll try it behind the seat but I'm worried about stability. I'm not very mechanically inclined. If I decide to move the K1 from the pod to the beavertail, do you think I can do this modification without removing it from the kayak? I'm afraid I will screw something up if I try removing it for the install.

I normally have my PP-768 battery either under my seat or in the very back of the kayak. It is too heavy for the front hatch, which you found that out. the Lure 11.5 is stable and wide enough that you shouldn't have to worry too much about stability (of course it really depends on your skill level) You can probably keep the rudder installed, but I found that it was easier to take it off completely. It isn't too bad at all to take it off and re-add it if you wanted to. The tension on the spring inside the rudder is going to make it a little harder to do.

Thank you for this video as I am waiting for my j2 kit in the mail. I will be installing on a Beaver tail as well. I am putting it on a Feel Free Mokin 10. My question is are you using your normal cable to raise the rudder with the extra weight or do you have a assist cable?

That's great. In this video I am utilizing the FeelFree cord that comes with the beaver tail. The Beaver Tail is harder to pull up to begin with, but it is still manageable. I would recommend trying it first and then if you need to make a change then that's no problem. I honestly like using the Vibe rudder with the Bixpy instead of cutting the beaver tail but it works. The vibe rudder makes it easier to pull up too. I used the Moken 10 with the vibe rudder assembly. It's a sweet little kayak.

@@jonping8 Thanks for the reply. Considering that I just got done installing the Beavertail system on the Mokin, I'll have to live with considering what it cost. Lol Your right, the pull cord was a little difficult so I ended making a change and ended up routing the Cord above the hull. That made it alot easier so hopefully I won't have any trouble with it. I also have a HooDoo Stingray 130. I may try putting it on that one in the future but to be honest I like my Mokin better. Happy yakin !
