Definitely a snapshot of culture of the time: the Cold War, AIDS epidemic, sexual freedom and responsibilities, race relations, etc. It was a crazy time that generated great music.

All us 80s kids heard was that we were going to die in a nuclear war. It seeped into everything. There’s lots of songs from the 80s about it. Then the 90s brought the end of the Cold War. We thought we did it, we made it. Nothing bad will happen now. It’s sad how naive we were.

  • @Riciaf

After she finally admitted it we had a good laugh about it.She had remembered me and really hoped I wouldn't figure out how i knew her. I never told a soul at the dealership about her Past career

I don't think it's specifically a war that the lyrics are referring to but rather when the western US was a frontier and there were "gunslingers" and fabled lawmen battling it out to tame and settle the "wild west". Hence the colt 45 in the beginning etc., cranked up, this song got people moving alright. Oh, and yes the cold war references as Patti said.

The Escape Club the are the only British artist to have a No. 1 hit in the United States while never charting in the UK. "Safe sex" was a big thing back then because of the AIDS virus and there were a lot of sayings like "When you have sex you are having sex with everyone your partner has ever had sex with." Also the line is "she's so mean but I don't care; I love her eyes and her wild, wild hair." Wich probably refers to punk rock women of the era, who would have a tough attitude and sport spiked mohawks, spikey jewelry, and lots of leather. (Edited for spelling)

1988 makes sense, that line about "AIDS only lasted 10 years" total BS and bad, bad statement. I battled HIV-II though being a total unknown killer through AIDS and still miss many we lost. My battle was HIV/AIDS, just like right now it's COVID-19. I praise my medical peers for going to war every day! So all y'all listen to an old psych nurse: this too shall pass. We humans will win. And we will have millions of stories to tell and songs to write. Carry on!

Amen. The 80's really did feel like the wild west at the time. The people who didn't experience the fear, hatred and just outright anger are getting a taste of what it was like. Also, people who have not been effected or affected by HIV/AIDS will never quite get it. We still need so, so much more vocal education 30 years later. That's sad.

I've loved this song since it was new but this is the first time I've ever seen the video. Generally speaking I don't like watching music videos because I prefer to use my own imagination in how to picture what's going on. That's true for this video because the picture I've always had in my mind had literally nothing to do with what was shown and I only hope that in the future my mind will forget this weird video and keep seeing what it did before.
