The business and career opportunities on the mainland are much better. Avoiding the issue and wanting status quo is not going to be a long term solution at the rate China is progressing. Putting China’s nationalist sentiments aside, geographically speaking, Taiwan is too critical to China’s national security for China to ever accept Taiwan’s independence. Just like the Tibet and the Himalayas are critical for China’s fresh water supply. The sooner Taiwanese confront this and start negotiating, the better deal they will get in a reunification arrangement. Taiwan still has chips (pun intended) to bargain with. But that is changing fast.

Putting nationalist sentiments aside, geographically, Taiwan is too important for China’s national security interests for China to ever be able to accept Taiwan as an independent country, even more so when Taiwan’s security guarantor is America. It will be interesting to see if a lasting peace agreement can ever reached for Ukraine. I doubt enshrining Taiwan’s neutrality in their constitution or legislating a very stringent political process for any Taiwanese government to declare independence (eg 2 national referendums 3 years apart with 80% supermajority) will ever be acceptable to China.

It is a major challenge for Taiwan's government to manage the conflicting interests of major groups, especially the KMT supporters who came from mainland China and identify with PRC rather than with Taiwan.

Putting nationalist sentiments aside, geographically, Taiwan is too important for China’s national security interests for China to ever be able to accept Taiwan as an independent country, even more so when Taiwan’s security guarantor is America.
It will be interesting to see if a lasting peace agreement can ever reached for Ukraine. I doubt enshrining Taiwan’s neutrality in their constitution or legislating a very stringent political process for any Taiwanese government to declare independence (eg 2 national referendums 3 years apart with 80% supermajority) will ever be acceptable to China.

While there must be some level of co-operation and knowledge sharing, both militaries do not engage in practising joint manoeuvres or operations. Taiwan and Israel were the first to help with Singapore ‘s efforts to build a defence force after she gained independence. This has been the bedrock of Singapore-Taiwan relations. Taiwan’s largesse and generosity was forthcoming and still continues despite Singapore’s declared intention at the beginning to pursue a “One-China” policy and to help facilitate the peaceful reunification of Taiwan and China when needed.
