I'm planting about 3 different varieties this year. Last year I attempted growing my first sweet potatoes and they did ok, but we learned something about that , that we could have done different. So we may attempt it again this year. As far as the regular potatoes go, I picked up a 5 lb bag of seed potatoes at our local farmers market alot cheaper than these websites sell em for.

How many pounds do you think this will produce?
When do you try to chit the potato.

I never weighed them after harvest. As for chitting, I don't

I don't need to fertilize.... *adds more compost as time passes* 😂 seriously though not having to worry about a "schedule" is a very lovely thing :)

Don't they need to scab over before planting them?

I don't. Some people swear buy it but I always plant them right away

Just found you. I could only find some small organic Yukon Golds today (zone 8) so I'm going to use those to chit. I've never done this, so we'll see. Should be good to plant mid April?

In galvanized cans? Are you aware what its made of? And that the foods grown in it will be poisoned?

You realize people have been drinking from galvanized pipes for decades, animal water troughs are galvanized. Galvanization is just steel coated with a layer of zinc. People even take zinc tablets. Also, zinc is an essential plant nutrient. Research it. There is no danger in using galvanized containers to grow food.

Grew Red Norlands for the first-time last year and same thing squirrels took a bite out of the biggest one close to the surface, was the size of a grapefruit boy was a I surprised and pissed. This year I'm growing the Sarpo Mira and Norlands again but will set up some fencing to keep out those damn squirrels!

LOL Good luck. I have so many squirrels I could probably hand feed them 🙂
