What was your first impression of Fairy Tail's art style? How does it compare to other series?
Many similiraties between Mashima and Oda
The early art style looks like OP or let's say RM art style which I'm not a fan of. I like the new art style a lot, it's distinct and it makes the characters not look similar. Unlike in OP most females looks like Nami😆
I don't know bro
Woah
@@Fish010 same😂😊
What I love about Hiro Mashima's artstyle is how he design his characters. They can look so bright and cheerful while at the same time look badass and cool if they want to. It's such unique style.
You can probably see that with every shonen mangaka ever. Even Araki does that and his style is arguably the sharpest ones out of all manga.
@@p3mcthedoor32 But what makes Mashima's style separate from them is that the characters looks very cutesy and bouncy indicating the light heartedness of the series. But when things get serious they can look sharp, particularly in fight scenes. Most shonen series already has the characters in a sharpen style to indicate the cool atmosphere. But Fairy Tail gives a more slice of life atmosphere which you would assume that if you have not seen the series.
You even like other style?
@@joaquinvaleri7022 Depends on how I find it appealing. But that's my own opinion.
@@queenrose2009 well i like Waltz With Bashir animation style
The only thing I miss about old Fairytail are the magic circles, they just disappeared with the style change
Since he's talking about the manga here, in the manga, the magic circles were never a thing. Since day one, they never had magic circles for their attacks, that was added in the anime, though, I also liked them
@@vcamv2354 thats the most intersting about the fairytail for me. and learning it wasnt manga canon thats crazy. im only reading the manga for 100 year quest and since i havent watch the anime for a long time. i ddint even notice it. but the magic circle is really cool and crazy that its not even canon in manga is shocking for me. :0
Actually.. as the other commenter said.. its an aanime canon thing. I think only for things such as Mystogans attack has the magic circle in the manga. Still I want it to comeback
I hated those things.
I don't remember seeing magic circles in the manga... But in the anime, since ep 1, there's a magic circle
It probably also contribute on how mashima slowly chnages his medium from traditional to digital. I remember reading an article on how mashima was excited because EZ was made fully digital and it made it very easier for him to have multiple projects at once. So I assume his artstle changes especially when it got more clean in yhe later stages was because digital helps him to find what he likes best.
Now he's cooking on Dead Rock 🔥🔥
Fairy Tail’s art style is one of, if not my favorite manga art style. Like you said not only are characters designs so full of life and personality, the same can be said for the world and how alive it feels. FT’s art style, especially in the later stages, are so clean, distinct, charming, and pleasing to look at
I agree with every word here. Love Mashima’s style
Haven't read fairy tail, only anime. Although I got Eden zero vol. 17-19
And it blew my mind. He found HIS art style, and doesn't try to hide "power of friendship" he says
"Here, Take it or don't " Westerner need to understand japans society has decayed..blood types were a big thing to make fun of them. If they tried to be a individual...they get made fun of. Japan DOESNT have...our background of individualism. So inthink we need to understand there might be something japan wants then we need
idk why people like this trash? the way he draw eyes is horrible
Mashima really is always growing as an artist honestly that goes for all artists.
And a writer. Unlike Fairy Tail, Eden Zero has a premise with an overarching narrative.
Lucy big bobs growing too😂

@@Brotherofthe4thCompany
The writing of 100YQ doesnt feel all over the place like the main Fairy Tail manga during the Avatar and Arbaless arcs
everytime i hear about mashima, he sounds like a more capable project manager who just happens to have exceptional manga skills, all his projects are complete, the story may flip flot but never his production. the manga always come out on time, the quality is always maintained.
There's a short manga written by one of his assistants describing her time working for Mashima. She described him as a very relaxed and humble guy who gave the work table to his assistants while he worked in the corner. The team always slacks off to play video games, but she's always surprised that they manage to complete the manga in time without any crunch. Mashima sounds like a great guy to work for
The more I hear about him the more I think he isn't a man, but a machine. A well oiled manga making machine.
I consider Mashima style like a ''Feel Good'' or ''Nice to be back''. His style remind me of the Fairy Tail's guild he create. It's not perfect, it has flaws, ups and downs but I always have fun when I go back.
Eloquently said.
My first impression of the art was like oh this is like pre ts One Piece art kinda and still think that at times with Mashima's own unique twist with his characters and fight scenes
Yeah especially early Fairy Tail. It’s fairly similar to One Piece’s art style around the time of Alabasta.
He was one of oda's assistants earlier in his career, definitely influenced by his art style
@@orebb2204 Mashima was never actually an assistant to anyone, never mind Oda.
@@ShonenOuji really? I could've sworn I heard that from somewhere? Makes it even more odd that his old art style is so strikingly similar to oda's early stuff, even down to the gildarts character that's basically a mirrored version of shanks. Can't be a coincidence right?
@@orebb2204Definitely a coincidence. That whole "Mashima was Oda's assistant" thing was some fabricated lie they made.
Surprised no one brings up the art style similarities in early fairly tail and One Piece
Although initially very similar to One Piece, Hiro Mashima was able to evolve into his own unique art style.
I think he worked pretty hard to get his art style.
They both got influence by AKira Toriyama's artstyle. Which is why they looks familiar but then diverged after a while.
Yeah, but luckily he grew fast from it. And now has a different one. Speaking of different just take a look on the rave master anime, one wouldn't have guest so easily that it's Mashimas work, if they didnt see Siegrain 😂
IKR, early anime design it looked so much like One Piece, then that style slowly disappeared
@@penarahsiano, oda was inspired by nubiro iwatsuki the Rurouni Kenshin mangaka while he work as his asistant....
Akira Toriyama just his idol.....
Oda shares same idea with Hiroyuki takei the shaman king author, you can see on the both manga in first chapter, and letter oda use many reference of Hiroyuki takei idea such "amidaryu' shinku Buddha giri" of Yoh asakura which implied as Shanks "kamusari or divine departure" who has same meaning of "God" and basil Hawkins straw human who smillar with amidamaru or spirit form in shaman king universe...
It's always fun and great to physically see manga artists improving their art through out the chapters you read
He has such a distinguished art style where what ever he draws you know exactly that he drew it
One element that people forget about manga artstylle evolution especially for long running shonen series with a long running anime adaptation is that the anime can influence the manga.
We have bleach as an example where Kubo stated in interview that he did pick up a few things on how Masashi Kudo (Bleach anime character designer) drew the characters. And Kubo himself stated that he evolved his artstyle to match the anime.
Like of course Kubo still did this own thing but a part of what affected his art evolution is also the anime.
oh what you said about paneling compared to the other manga you put as examples, made me realize that I really like the more simple paneling in mashimas work lol. i find work like jujutsu kaisen just wayyy too messy, and i dont mean its ugly or badly drawn, mostly just like, idk trying to find that one sock in ur room when its mad messy. I personally just cant make sense of a lot of the stuff there. so like thats mayhaps one reason why i like fairy tail and other mashima mangas soooo much. like just one reason in many but I hadnt tought about it like that at all before.
I never understood these types of video. They interesting, dont get me wrong. But as an artist myself, I can just simply tell you that over time Mashima Sensei got bette at drawing his characters. Your art changes over time, especially when you draw frequently.
Thing is with this type of videos, they are mostly for people who can't even draw a potato (like myself 😅). For example, everyone can see Mashima changed his style but a little analysis on that for someone that doesn't know jack about drawing is nice, but for someone as you who is an artist and has a fair bit of knowledge of the subject videos like this may seem useless
I understood the title as "what happened all this time with FT artstyle?", an analysis of the changes through their different eras (that he did) rather than finding just one answer to the question on it.
The backgrounds are an odd one. More detail doesn't always equate to a better background. Many artists will use varying levels of detail to draw the reader's eye to important elements, imply depth by having less detail and definition in objects further away to simulate light scattering and water in the atmosphere / mist. I'm also not sure we can credit Fairy Tail's backgrounds to Mashima because most manga artists have a crew of assistants that typically add effects, scanlines, fill blacks and who draw the backgrounds so that the named artist can focus primarily on character art and actually meet the brutal deadlines of the manga industry.
I don't think that Mashima drew backgrounds himself, things like that are usually done by assistants

every mangaka evolves their art significantly over the years (even if he isn't doing 100 year quest) just part of what happens when you draw a lot and for years and at the pace that most mangaka are along with being willing to change things to be more accurate but still stylized
Finally .I was searching for videos about fairy tail art style differences
Thx
There’s probably no shortage of videos on what happened to this series, but I’d definitely like to see your take on “What Happened to Seven Deadly Sins?” and “What Happened to Seven Deadly Sins’s Artstyle?”
i follow him since first volume of Rave, and hes one of artist that contantly evolving in artstyle
the evolution is kinda crazy
I think technology also played part on this. In the past, you had to draw with a literal pen, now you can draw digitally and its easier to focus and overlap drawings on top of another. That said, I have no proof so I might be wrong
What I'm surprised you didn't mention is what happened with his artstyle after Fairy Tail. At first, you can see the gigantic influence of One Piece, and later Mashima develops his own, iconic style, but I think in the "6 stage" a problem started rising. From then on, his characters kept getting more generic and the faces got softer. Before, the characters were able to be both cute and intimidating, but now it all looks very chibi-like, not to mention that I see more and more drastic anatomy mistakes in his art.
And of course, artstyle changes, and if you put the terrible anatomy aside, Mashima's new style works just fine with Eden's Zero, but Fairy Tail? It's completely different, and personally I will ALWAYS prefer the older style for how iconic and memorable it was. Nowadays, it's not really special compared to all the anime out there...
Any opinion fairytail is one of the best manga/anime I've ever seen its simply beautiful and has motivated me to pick up my pencil and start drawing and perfecting his art style
I wouldn't use the backgrounds as exemples as they've most likely been drawn and inked by assistants.
i will always love fairytail..
honestly, i thought the first few chapters were very one piece inspired. Especially proportion wise. Characters had massive foreheads, long skinny limbs, massive hands and the females had crazy proportions. It honestly became much better as it finished, where they evolved into his own style.
5:10 caught me completely of guard
I think Hiro mashima was a fan of one piece hence why he took some inspiration from how oda draws his characters. Over time he manages to develop his own style.
I remember loving the art design for female characters. It just looks so right
I love Mashima he and Takeuchi were the reason i started drawing in the first place there simple yet detailed
What I adore about Mashima's characters the most is his understanding of shape language. It's true that this s more so relevant to the earlier chapters than the current ones, but nonetheless the fact still stands. For example, both Laxus and Elfman are extremely broad and have lots of spiked shapes, yet Elfman always looks nicer and more inviting. You can always tell who is who even when entirely in shadow purely because of their unique idle poses and how their individual details make them stand out. I think my favourite example of this is Laxus' coat and headphones. It's just such recognizable shape.
I liked Rave Master so when I saw some similar art I jumped on this back on the day
honestly early fairy tail art looks quite similar to just before the time skip once piece art. Back when it came out and i first saw it i even thought it was made by oda
That's what I always thought back then they had a pretty similar art style
i love both art styles but i have a bias for the older art style since that’s what i grew up with 😮💨 i also like how it was so simple and bright compared to the newer style that kinda makes everyone look like idols and not like friends just vibing if that makes sense

Hey your dynasty warriors the track in the background is either from DW 8 or DW 7. Also it's funny how this conversation came up I've been seeing it all over Twitter and now you do this video it was very insightful. Since I haven't read all of the fairy tail manga

0:03 bruh...they all looks like they're from One Piece 😭😂
They kind of look nothing alike unless you are comparing One Piece of 2010 with Fairy Tail of 2003. Both artists have had several changes in style over decades and both are trying to match the demand of the same market so it's inevitable that their choices would overlap at different points in time.
Its even worse then you think.
Copied already existing anime. Got more popular and nobody ever talk about the unpopular one. It reall got overshadowed.
Irs not plagiarism, its really is the copied stuff from charactersheet
@@ItsJustKayaidrk who u saying is copying but js so u know, op came before and is way more popular
At the start it feels something similar to One Piece, but seems like Mashima develop his own style and stuck in that and honestly it was an amazing job, we can talk about if Mashima is goor or bad writing plots or stories, but no one can deny the quality of their drawings.
i remeber comparing myself to mashimas provessness when i did not so good trying to capture lucy in his style and i remeber thinking @well he also made some mistakes while improving but i never actually knew which ones and im glad this video showed me them specifically
I think the thing is, as the manga improved, it began to take inspiration from the anime design because that feels like where the current look of fairy tail was obatined
I personally prefer the artstyle from Tartaros arc rather than that of 100 year quest
The brightness and generic style doesn't suit Fairy Tail at all considering its the father of most magic anime.
Please do mission yozakura family art style next 😭😭😭
Aside from the god-tier girls he design, I like how many different outfits the characters wear. From casual to weird, and cool and over the top.
This is a very simplified explanation, but on the subject of Mashima vs. Ueda, one of the biggest distinguishers (and things that make Ueda's style feel more 'generic') is that Mashima tends towards more exaggerated shapes and proportions in his characters. Yes, the art got more detailed over time, but it still has more unconventional proportions when you look at things like the size of the forehead, more narrow or extremely board shoulders, and elongated torsos. The shapes of the bodies themselves still follow the same general construction from his earlier works which doesn't always follow realistic body structure. It gives a sense of intentional imbalance that makes Mashima's work stand out even amongst other manga or artists who are trying to get close to his style. It's an intentional use of shape language as a way to both communicate character traits and simplify anatomy in a charming way. If you look at Ueda's style, you'll see that it balances out a lot of those exaggerations while also adding in more realistic anatomy. While this is good on a technical level, it has an entirely different charm to it (one that is more common because it has more basis in realism which is the root of all stylization). Neither style is necessarily better than the other, but i personally prefer Mashima's older works because they feel distinct and probably helped greatly in making Fairy Tail such a recognizable anime even to those who never watched/read it.
As a lot of other people pointed out, this has a lot to do with the fact that FT was such a long-running series and Mashima's influences changed over time! Early FT feels undeniably influenced by the shounen of its age (particularly one piece) and as the industry has shifted, so has the style of FT. It's a similar phenomenon to how animation studios also tend to 'modernize' or make characters look more generic when adapting manga to animation because its easier to do that than train a whole studio to do a new style from scratch. It's possible that Mashima sought out Ueda specifically to infuse FT with a more modern style, and that's why the shift is so noticable.
backgrounds might be made by the assistants. Maybe as the manga (and anime) gets more popular, the mangaka might have extra money to hire more assistants. Maybe that also contributes to the much prettier art style we see now
I like the artstyle whether old or newer.
The only thing i found confusing at the moment
in the anime 100 years quest,
It seems like hanime artists are at work.
You can see that clearly with lucy for example.
I thought to myself that you're seen the artstyle somewhere in the first episode.
I think the name of this hanime
Was something with gal kawaii.
Suggestion : what happened to eye shield 21
Art styles just change slightly over time. Look at One Piece from chapter 1 to now
Same can be said for Naruto and Attack On Titan
yup, it's what happens when you draw basically every day for 8 - 15 hours a day you are bound to improve and have things change especially as you get older you may feel more drawn to change things up and how you work. I don't think there is a single manga out there with 0 progression in the art and it's style if it goes beyond 100 chapters
I am a HUGE fan of RAVE, it's my favorite fictional series of all time. Late RAVE / early Fairy Tail are still the best era of Mishima's art, imo
Like dude nothing happened, the current artstyle is the same for years now. Just in the beggining it was a bit different, it had a bit of touch of one piece, but luckily Mashima was able do develop his artstyle beyond that. Yeah, development that's the word you are looking for.
Srsly why such a question? If you mean the current 100 yrs quest then that's on the studio cause allmost every studio has it's own animation style (exception is A1 pictures, which animates the characters to look as close as possible to the manga, and that's one of the reasons I love that studio so much).
So he read fire force and fairy tail how many long running series are you reading where do you find the time
Just have no social life basically. It’s easy!
U can download manga and just read it anywhere, or bring the book itself.
I read during train rides, waiting for stuff. So you can end up making a lot of progress freely.
one thing that i see a lot of people shit on (but somewhat valid) is that Mashima keeps copying previous character designs in his new works, like all o fthem have a big boobed blonde main character, his new works "Gate of Nightmares" and "Dead Rock" has obvious Fairytail clones
I always described Fairy Tail in the beginning looking like One Piece, towards the middle i loved the style most, it was the final stage that it looked very cutesy and squishy thats nit my favorite but j love fairy tail and mashima sensei as FT was the manga i followed and read religiously each week for new chapters throughout high school till the end of original FT. Gray and Juvia are my favorite characters❤
I love Fairy Tail
Only watched the Anime, but Hiro Mashima's art style is good.
It went from one piece esq, to more generic shonen. The way the manga ends, art style wise feels akin to your typical sports anime characters. It’s always fun to see where an artist starts out, and then finishes with their series. It feels very similar to the soul eater manga. It’s almost like once these manga get picked up as anime, their style becomes less Quirky and more conventional
I understand why they had to change it. Their foreheads were too big to always fit the pages or the screen
Same with araki, shit changes after a decade
Tartaros Manga Art Style is peak Hiro Mashima, even the anime version is dope (not the color though) tbh Hiro has on the most eye catchy and satisfying art style there - it's simple but hard to master.
I see it as though it went from cartoony and round into something more grounded and sharp. Bleach kind of does the same thing too. Regardless, his art style is really good. But you could argue that anime art changed too. From my knowledge, anime in the 2010's art started to become similar to one another in the sharp and bright style. Which kind of sucks, because the dark and gloomy style from the 90's/2000's is something some anime kind of need for the little edge in dreadful/fearful situations. I don't really know how else to explain it.
His women got thiccer, way thicc
Tbh I think maybe Hiro changing his style which isn't bad u have to adapt do different things I am loving what his doing
I like fairy tail. It was the first anime i ever watched when i was a kid i basically based my personality off of natsu in elementary. But then i decided to rewatch it and i really didn’t enjoy it. After finishing it i had made my mind and it was that it i don’t enjoy it as much as i used to
11:40 Mashima on the left careful of proportions and Ueda on the right with the One Piece-like stretching of the characters...
I'll watch this later but is that extra chapter that was made for the 100 year quest anime included in this? Its interesting to see post Eden Zero Mashima style compared to the final Fairy Tail chapter
raven master IS SO GOOD yummay
Desde edens Zero vino mejorando mucho mas su estiló de arte 💞
Have you read the new Fairy Tail omake chapter that Mashima released a week or so ago? The art in that chapter looks way different than the other parts you mentioned in this chapter and sadly I do think it's a lot worse than the others
I haven’t but I heard it was a decent chapter. I’m familiar with the style though because it’s mostly what he does in Edens Zero. I like it, but I can see why someone else probably doesn’t.
i would really appreciate a detailed video comparing the 100 year quest and you could say the fairy tail last season anime style .As the 100 year quest art style is very different from your "fairy tail unique style, i hope you get what im saying lol
I like in Mashima style that 99% of his characters have cool design. In One Piece Eichiro Oda creating too goofy characters even if they are hyped. Mashima always make cool designs and thats great. ❤
Fairy Tail's artstyle is still my most favourite.
Along with artstyle, there's also the shift in story telling. When they made jokes in the early chapters, they hit easier because it is akin to a cartoon. However, when you have a sharper, more serious looking character, it's harder to laugh at them. It made me a little sad that Fairy Tail slowly lost the cartoon like charm towards the end, that had drawn me to it in the first place.
Well... I prefer old Mashima's art style. Like in the end of RAVE master and the beginning of Fairy Tail. + for me, Fairy Tail manga was special and really cool from the beginning until the tournament arc. It had its flaws but wasn't boring or embarrassing to read. After that, I guess it's the decline. My problem with this story is that sometimes we focus too much on other characters in the guild while, honestly, I don't care of them. + the lack of direction in the story is somehow boring because, there's almost no goal. The story could have been finished in the first chapters with Lucy just being a FT's member. So like until Gajeel kidnaps her. But as I said earlier, the plot seemed cool for me until the arc tournament even though sometimes it was badly executed. The gate arc and stuff with dragon's return during the tournament arc had so much potential but it failed. As for the initial subject which is the artstyle. I believe his old artstyle was gorgeous and was part of the manga's identity. When the artstyle changes, this identity changes as well and I don't recognize the spirit of the Manga. In some cases, the change of artstyle is related with draw improving as seen in AOT and Haikyuu, but in the Manga. Which is funny because I liked how they improved in the Manga but not in the anime. Indeed : in my opinion, the change of artstyle between S3 and S4 with the change of studio ruined my experience of the end of AOT while I've already read it all and liked so much. The same goes for Haikyuu which I consider the s1-s2-s3 like the best seasons with top quality of animation and artstyle but once we got to S4 It never felt the same. For me slight differences like these are important and can ruin the experience and the feel. It's like watching a TV show for 2 seasons, with the MC actor being great. And then substituting the Mc actor with another and being completely lost and confused with what it has been shown because of the actor's change. It wouldn't make any sense.
Second one looks better to me
The original has a certain nostalgia but the new one does look really good.
I started to draw with Fairy tail art style and for me tartaros and magic game was is peak.

Will you talk about the changes of the art style for the anime series? I remember when I watched Grand magic games episodes, halfway through they changed the art style, and it makes the characters look more like a 2D than 3D, which I disliked so much, and I am always wondering what happened that time and hoping they will change it back, but they never did
And because of that change I barely even watch any episode after that, can't stand the art style 😢
Sakamoto days next 🆙
I had the same experience, Early FT Artstyle was Ok-ish, It just didn't look pleasant, Which is something that CANNOT be said for Current FT 🔥
I pretty strongly prefer the classic style over the newer more generic one
I used to be obsessed with Hiro Mashimas artstyle as well as Fairy Tail and some of his other works like his short stories, Monster Hunter Orage and so on and I looked up to him so much but I absolutely despise how his style has developed over the past years. His anatomy has gotten so incredibly bad and Im so ??? HOW. Out of curiosity I looked into the final Edens Zero chapter and that was. some god awful paneling
I probably sound very harsh here but I still absolutely love his older art, I still look through his first Fairy Tail artbook with so much love so seeing in what direction his style has developed just makes me sad :U I was actually planning on making a video on his artstyle too and Im more motivated to do it now after watching yours and I really enjoyed your video!
Are you gonna do Edens Zero next, since it just ended?
Idk about next, but hopefully soon. But I do have something else planned!
In my very own opinion it seems they are trying to make the characters look more closely to the anime.
Not complaining as Fairy Tail is one of my whole times favorites, I also agree the art evolution is really notorious but in a good way.
Fairy tail is so good
Art style have minor change overtime.
This video was brilliantly made/crafted!!! Going through the whole series and taking a look at the art style and finding those points in which it changes is such a big task and you nailed it perfectly, especially with the panels you used to make your points or show off what you were getting at!!! I am curious thought, because early in the video since you recently read through RAVE, you appreciate Mashimas earlier style, but I'm curious as to what your favorite stage of Mashima's art is!!! As for what I think of Mashima's art, his art style is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE from any mangaka!!!
It would probably be early Fairy Tail.
if anything his Arstyle of middle fairy tail look more like middle stage of Rave master artstyle . Sharper .
I honestly prefer his more recent style. As other people have pointed out, his early look looks too similar to "One Piece", and that was always very distracting to me.
A lot of people say that his current style is too generic, but honestly, I don't see it. As you yourself have pointed out, when he draws characters from other franchises, you can tell his style very quickly. How would that be possible if his style is really generic?
If anything, I think his main flaw in his current style is that his designs have become a bit too "kawai-fied". They have gone a bit too soft-looking, and they don't always match the tone of the story. That and, of course, that his main characters all tend to look too similar. Not out of a lack of skill, since you always find incredible designs in his villains and supporting cast, but rather that he seems to... "have a type", so to speak, that he seems to refuse to let go of.
Day 7 of asking to cover Tomodachi game.
Does he even draw his background himself?
Probably not. You usually have someone who only draws backgrounds to get that done. Having said that, even very successful manga artists leave backgrounds as the last priority.
"most iconic characters in manga" idk man, Mashima just kinda copy pasted the same traits onto every single character he designs. All his series suffer from same face syndrome and it's been this way for decades
The artstyle change in anime during and after the tournament was the worst. The older and the new 100 year quest looks much better
Answer: Art improvement (or "art evolution").
There. I saved you 14 minutes.
