One thing I never understood from Game of Thrones is why did Mance rayder attack Castle black when he could have chosen any of the other castles when most of them were unmanned and they could have just walked through

He didn’t want to bypass the Wall. He wanted to take it to use is as a barrier against the White Walkers. Also all the other castle’s tunnels were sealed so they would have needed to climb the wall anyway. Many of his people wouldn’t have been able to make the climb at all and he would have never gotten more then a percentage over the wall before he was discovered by a patrol and then would need to defend the spot while his men were climbing the wall & clearing the tunnel for those that can’t climb.
Lastly, if he did manage to get past the wall and moved south he then would have to worry about the Nights Watch being behind him while also worrying about the Northern Houses in front of him.

@thomasleonardis711 East Watch and the Shadow Tower both have open tunnels. They were 100,000 strong I wouldn't be worried about the nights watch. The northern armies would a issue but even if they got through at castle black they would still have that to worry about

@@frost2104ify He wanted to crush the watch in the battle. Then as he moved South he didn’t need to worry about the few hundred men behind him. And he could have moved on quicker leaving only a few men to help the sick, old & wounded make it from beyond the wall instead of needing to guard the area from Njght Watch forces. I agree that tactically a victory at Shadow Tower was an easier win and then his forces could have swept up the wall to take Castle Black. But I think for him it was all about speed and momentum. He wanted to get passed the wall and away from the Others as fast as possible.

The Nightfort needs to be burned. It's filled with very bad mojo.
