    Thanks for the great video; I really enjoy your content and you just seem like a cool dude and more importantly a good dad! I also am a big believer in the 2 bike system; I have a 2019 BMW F850GS Adventure for my “everyday” bike, and then a 2020 Yamaha WR250R for my “almost” dirt bike. I think it’s smart to have both and I was able to get a screaming deal on the WR so I’m excited to hop it up and go on trails that I would never bring the BMW on. Thanks again for the videos!

    Dear Dork in the Road,
    Loved this video, and I have two of the same bikes you have: the XT225 and DRZ400. I agree with all that you said and think these are a great pair for a lot of reasons. My son doesn't have experience off road, but killed it on a trip to Moab last May on some of the most technical trails riding the XT, with its low weight and low seat height. In fact, we must have seen 20 or 30 XT225s in Moab over our 10-day trip confiming it is a great bike for that kind of riding. Also, it kept between 55-60 mph over Monarch pass riding to Moab from Colorado , which was equally shocking (We trailered bikes out West from VA, but car threw a rod in Salida, CO so we left the car and road the dual sports the rest of the way). He's 5' 10" and about 160 lbs and had no luggage. I carried all of our camping gear (very minimal and light weight) on the DRZ400 as I'm 185 lbs and it seemed the appropriate way to balance out the power differential between the two bikes. I am sure your daughter will love the XT and I am planning on doing some of the Mid Adlantic BDR with my wife this Spring.. The adventures these bikes provide are unforgettable--- my third bike is a V strom 1000 that I've taken on many adventures as well, but I just ordered a T7 (due next month--we'll see) and will sell the V strom in once it arrives as I loved the light feel of the T7 front end when I test road it from a traveling Yamaha semi that came here in Virginia last year--- just couldn't get my hands on one, eventhough I tried.

    I also own a DRZ and agree it is a fantastic motorcycle. I have 25,000 plus miles on mine and yes, I had to replace the stator, but otherwise, awesome. What you need now is a multi-dimensional street bike. You should ride my Sportster, not the best motorcycle in the world, but, the best motorcycle Harley-Davidson ever manufactured. If I could afford it though, I bet that Pan American is the best bike they build today. But, you already have the KLR so, you already nailed it.

    Lovely bikes. Just wondering. Why did you trade in the Africa Twin for the KLR (which is sadly not available in The Netherlands. We have to keep it with the Versys)?
    I decided to trade in my Versys 650 for the Africa Twin for more comfort etc. (Basically stole my husband's AT that was already fully customized and approved and bought him a new 1100).
    Next to the AT I own two Suzuki DRZ 400 with electric start for the off road adventures and enduro riding. Sadly it's from 2005. Younger ones can't be found here. They stopped selling it due to the European rules on emissions. But do love it. Brought me to the top of the Sommelier, Jaffereu etc.

      @@DorkintheRoad thanks. Was already searching in your list for it, but couldn't find it fast enough before going off to training.
      Do love the simplicity of the KLR. Such a shame it's not available in Europe.
      Explains a lot. After deciding the switch from super sports to more touring/adventure bikes, I started with a Honda CB500X. After that I bought the slightly heavier Kawasaki Versys 650. Now I am enjoying longer tours on my Africa Twin from 2019 and decided for Enduro to use the smaller and a lot lighter Suzuki. The Suzuki I lowered by Hyperpro, but the other one my husband is using I can ride as well. Even though I am small (only 1,62cm tall). But I didn't lower the AT. It's funny to watch me get on it, fish with my toes to kick in the side stand and then ride off. Most simply do not understand how. But by building up I grew more comfortable and confident that I can.

    The two bike system is starting to make more and more sense to me. After weeks of looking at and sitting on bikes and living in Colorado. I could see how having an enduro dual sport bike like a DRZ400S or a Husky FE 350, 450, or 501 and pairing that with something like the Yamaha Tenere 700 or new Aprilia Tuareg 660 could just be perfect. I am just starting to process the two bike thing though, but I like it. It’s a significant investment but could easily be the best outcome. On the compromise side, as a shorter rider, I still like the KTM 390 Adventure most. The KTM 690 Enduro R has a lot of merit too, especially if you can pick up a used one at a decent price. Have you tried any of those? Would love to hear your thoughts.

    Great line up.
    I want to buy a KLR but am torn between that and the T7. And before everyone comments on how much better the T7 is I want to point out that the only reason I don't go right for it is because I don't do the gnarly trails it would be better for....and I like the bigger tank on the KLR.
    What are your thoughts?

    • @urbanadventurer5
      @urbanadventurer5 2 года назад +1

      I have looked at those two recently. I think both are well suited for highway riding all the way to semi-gnarly trails. Their weight is similar and they are considered good values. I think the T7 is a more refined machine, but the KLR is sweet too if you like the look. The T7 and the new Aprilia Tuareg 660 are my two favorite mid to full size adventure bikes on the market, so one of those would get my vote over the KLR, but there is absolutely no reason to turn your nose up at the KLR from a performance perspective, especially when you factor in the price. I am
      just not a huge fan of the look and top heavy weight. Can’t go wrong with any of those though. Lots of people love them.

    • @rileyhughes5613
      @rileyhughes5613 2 года назад +2

      I think the T7 also has the highway advantage, so if you're a commuter or want to do long distance touring I personally would pick that.

      @@DorkintheRoad That makes sense.
      There are several other states that no longer use the MSF BRC. California, Pennsylvania and some others (I think) have moved to the Total Control beginners course. I think that the the Idaho STAR rider program might be based on the Team Oregon curriculum. Washington State uses a few different curriculum. It is very different from fifteen years ago when MSF was use by almost every state that had a rider training program.

      @@OneOldManRiding - I'm old and my new bike that requires little maintenance and no repair is almost more than I can manage, what with the upgrades and farkles and off-bike accessories. I can't imagine the hassle of having 26 motorcycles, not to mention the insurance cost and the bureaucratic mess of paying property taxes which I particularly loathe. Most of the bikes are in two storage areas with no power. I just wired a large LiFePO4 battery with a charger and inverter and multiple battery maintainers for my friend so he can charge the big battery at home, take it to the storage facility and plug in half of his bikes to charge their batteries every month. That's nuts! He has some VERY nice bikes, though!

I just bought a 2022 Traveller model and I sometimes I kick myself wishing I had just saved a few more months and gotten a Norden 901 or waited for the DesertX. Maybe it will grow on me though. I can’t even afford one bike and I started riding at 5 I rode my bikes until they couldn’t ride anymore now that I’m older and bigger I need a bigger bike but the bigger bikes are extremely overpriced and the reason I say that is you can buy Japanese diesel compact tractor for the same price as one dirt bike/dual sport
