Thanks guys. Great series. Sam, you so need to get into doing your own videos. I could watch you paint all day. Or livestream... ANYTHING MAN! The minis look great. God damn.
I could watch Sam paint for hours. 10-20 minutes every other week is just a cruel drip-feed. Those are awesome rust effects from only using a couple thinned down paints. I recently treated myself to the Secret Weapon weathering set so I can’t wait for those to arrive.
from someone who is a professional artist. Sam Lenz showing the consistency of the paint is one of the best things on youtube. I show this video to my into painting classes for figurative painting.
Need more Sam on this channel! Atom's vids are great, and I'll probably always check up on 'TMs' but Sam takes the channel to the next level! Great Work Friends!!!
Hi guys. First, thank you so much. I am a 57 year old gal that has stumbled into miniature painting. Your videos and Adam's tutorials have been a great help! So pardon if you get asked this a lot. How long do your brushes last and what do you do with them when the end curls up? Thanks again.
I find that the synthetic nylon brushes regardless of brand will start to curl within hours, before I've even completed one model with them. I carefully snip the curls off with a scissors and use them for non-detail work like blocking in areas of the miniature, washes, mixing paints on the palette, etc... I try to find a use for them as long as I can. For a brush that can hold its point for a long time it's worth investing in a few round sable watercolor brushes. I believe the black handled brush Sam uses in this video is a Winsor & Newton series 7. Escoda Reserva and Raphael 8404 are also good brands.
Thanks to Sam, I have started licking my brush, and surprisingly, it really helps! Great tutorial again, guys :-) I also quite like the easily missed bit where Sam dips the BACK of the brush into the paint pot to get paint onto his pallet, rather than using the bristles. Why didn't I think of that?!
A way i really like to paint rusty weapons is rhinox hide base, then get a small piece of foam like the cubed foam in carry cases, use the foam to dab on mournfang brown then dab on skrag brown in a smaller quantity and finally dab on iron breaker near the weapons edges
Atom with all that bass. Awesome video, funnily enough I've never actually used a wash so I really don't know how to apply it evenly. I believe I ordered one with my reaper order so I'll get to practice all that washy goodness.
...Hang on... Did Sam just reveal that it is not, in fact, the "little plastic soldiers" but rather we, the viewers, who are the "Tabletop Minions"? Well, quite frankly I'm shocked and appalled! (Also; I love these videos. I'm a complete beginner and I actually used the wet-blending-fur-video-wossname the other day and was shocked - for realz this time - at how good it came out. A big thank you for what you do, both of you.)
Is there a video where I can see how to prepare the colours on the wet palette? You seems to have a kind of strategy doing it and mixing the different colours
Model Mates rust and verdigris effects are amazing, I love them (dunno if they're still available to buy though :( ), along with AKs rust pigments and typhus rust :) Love your painting videos Sam, great to watch a master at work :)
Its close, a toss up between Stromhost Silver and Runefang Steel. Both are in the layer paint line and both are excellent for silver or bright metal touch ups. Now if someone could help figure out which is GWs best Brass/Bronze, and Gold paints, that would be great....AoS and Custodes have made that line of color a bit of a mess.
I so want to get a set of these guys just to make one look like Spinal from Killer Instinct. I would have to make a few adjustments with molding green stuff....but I mean its ALMOST worth it.
Tabletop minions I have a question. Is it OK for me to use oil paints on my miniatures. I got my first GW miniature set a few days ago but I discovered that there are very few hobby shops in my city. And the ones that do sell acrylic paints are either expensive or don't have a substantial range of colors. Do you have any tips on using oil paints? especially since there aren't many youtube videos discussing the subject. ex: Are there oil metallics? is it OK if i paint the model without priming the model (colors seem to stick pretty well to my test miniature)? what is the best way to dry my miniature quickly (it's been 2 days but the base black on my miniature has still not completely dried).
Looks like he's using a regular old synthetic brush for general work, then a winsor & newton for the details. I do something similar myself. Save the expensive brushes with the fine tips for when you need them!
Wait... Does everyone else use the back of their brush to grab small amounts of paint from their pots? Am I the only once using paint pots like a barbarian? Getting it all caught in my bristles and ferrule?
Bit of a strange audio mix. Try bringing the lows down a bit and raise the volume of the high end. Seems awkwardly bassy. Otherwise great video, love this guys painting style!

Lord paint licker has has spoken, blessed be his brushes

Good rust technique:
-typhus corrosion in patches
-risa rust drybrush
-highlight of deathclaw brown
- fine highlights of firedragon bright
classic GW loyalist! I'm with u!
The Waaagh! Productions it's not that I'm a loyalist, I'm just too scared to try others!😂
ha!
"Not too shabby, but just shabby enough." -Sam Lenz, Tabletop Minions.
Sam’s relaxing voice and encouragement to keep trying and not take it so seriously is really motivating for me. Love these !
Thanks guys. This series is really useful. I have switched to using a bigger brush than normal and focusing on just using the tip.
Need more Sam on this channel! Atom's vids are great, and I'll probably always check up on 'TMs' but Sam takes the channel to the next level! Great Work Friends!!!
Great video. I'm sure Sam's 'tabletop standard' is better than my absolute best efforts!
Max Frenzel I was thinking that exact thing!
I absolutely love the stuff Sam is doing. Would love to see more Shadespire stuff from Sam in future TM videos.
Sam thanks for the tips from all your videos particularly wet blending! And mr atom for featuring sam!! Thanks alot!
Thank you for this. I have been working on rust damaging my Necromunda terrain pieces and this looks like a nice touch to add to it.
Stuck in hopsital ill af so just gonna hang out with these dudes and pretend my life’s not a mess 😂
Fantastic video, very practical rust techniques. I'll be using these in future
I dont think anything beats the audio on Tabletop Minions videos... the voices just sound so crisp yet bassey.

Thank you Dylan. I suspect your right about investing in a brush. Good ideas for the curly cues!

Little bit of finely ground cinnamon for texture has worked well in the past. Works well for dirt texture too.
Sam is the happiest dude ever. Good stuff.

Cant wait to get into that purple glow. Another great vid.
I am loving this series
another great video, a quick way of obtaining a cool looking effect
These have been amazing considering I have just started a Deathrattle army! Thanks guys keep up the great work
Tanks Sam, you're very gentle,

Great timing on this, exactly what I need to paint right now! 👍
Love this series! Great stuff!
Congratulations on the Warhammer RUclips award win!
GREAT TUTORIAL THANKS ! WHAT BRUSH IS IT YOU USE ?
Another Sam tutorial .. ¨heavy breathing intensifies¨
what i learned from that video: use your posterputty arround your base not under it!! brilliant :)
Yeah, that’s a tip I should start using myself. Thanks for watching!
Very interesting. thanks for sharing.
had to turn up the volume because others didnt record their audio as good as you did and now my plant pots are vibrating :D

Great video! I am just wondering what kind of brush are you using? Thanks for sharing
Sam, what brush is that you keep using? I switch between two or three brushes as I paint but i notice you like to stick to that one.
Lord Brushlicker beckons you to paint awesome shit
Great video!
I use it and i believe that GW's brightest silver is now Stormhost Silver not sure though

this is a nice video thanks. cant wait till i have skellys to paint now
Awesome video, some great tips! 😀
Thanks for fixing the camera focus problems

Great subject and lucky timing for me. I just started painting my Pox Walkers, they are all getting rusty weapons....thanks gents.
More amazing work, gents!

Happy new year uncle atom
This really helped me. Thank you!!
Great job. I really like the look of Sam's brushes. Anyone know what they are? :)
Awesome thanks for the video guys
Just noticed the face Sam is doing right at the start. Is that what happen when you eat too much paint ?

is that model painting itself?! i cant see the painter!
Camo keeps him hidden. Thanks for watching!
Was "mixing to taste" a pun?
First I guess, thanks for the video Uncle Atom!
modern masters metal effects oxidizing iron paint is by far better than anything anyone else has and it is almost no effort
The shirt is fire.
what brush is that? synthetic maybe? Can you please explain why did you choose to use that brush over any other? :D thx in advance
Looks like he's using a regular old synthetic brush for general work, then a winsor & newton for the details. I do something similar myself. Save the expensive brushes with the fine tips for when you need them!
Of course, I see this immediately after I paint these guys
when is Sam getting his own YT channel?
Wait... Does everyone else use the back of their brush to grab small amounts of paint from their pots? Am I the only once using paint pots like a barbarian? Getting it all caught in my bristles and ferrule?
I bet he sniffs so much because of the paint licking, It's funny. Licking gives him the power, I wish I had that mutant power :(
Why do you lick your brush?
Some people finish cleaning their brushes and bringing them to a point on cloth or a paper towel, some people do it by licking their brushes.
It skeeves the #$&@ out of me. 😬
why wouldn't you lick your brush ;-)
To avoid ingesting toxic pigments or additives in the paint.
As long as your only using Acrylic's - you're not ingesting anything toxic. Just bitter as all hell.

"I like free stuff" me too
Love your work Sam, but it makes me squirm every time you lick your brush..... but hey, whatever works for you dude!
Thanks for the tips. I won't be licking my brush and ingesting paint though.
dam Dam DAM i hate you thats so good
Lowkey looking like Elon Musk let his hair grow out...
This video isn't perfect example of why DSLRs don't really work for this kind of video
And your comment needs an editor.
agreed!
bugger
Great video, but for the love of god. Blow your nose!!!
No focus on most of the video.
