Very new to mini painting, and I was hoping for more with Sam, because I'd devoured all of the old videos. Thank you both so much for taking the time to make such practical tutorials.
Sam - Atom : I wanted to let you know that all of Sam's other videos were not helpful and too long. This video was perfect. The simple way you presented wetting blending has me now adding it to my to do list of things to try on my next experimental model. Always thought it was something out of reach, or too time consuming for my level. You have proved me wrong. The length of the video is spot on. The camera angle with the pallet in the ground was great. I am looking forward to seeing more of Sam's videos in this format.
Love when Sam gives tutorials. Very practical and doable with some practice. Also, I can't help but laugh when he puts his paint brush in his mouth to make a point. I am pretty sure he did not even rinse it this time. Great job.
Your videos are very much appreciated. Ive been painting miniatures for a long time but have, for the past year, taken it more seriously. Learning these techniques take a long time to master. I consider myself a beginner, so making lots of mistakes. Any way i digress, just wanted to say thanks!
Sam has really improved his on-screen personality. Looks much more comfortable. I feel like he did a better job being clear and explaining the steps as well. Really looking forward to more!
Hey atom and sam! I really really do enjoy sams tutorials. he has a great energy explaining. I wish sam would do more tutorials on the tabletopminions though. thanks for all the great, awesome videos!
I really like that you don't put out oppinions, atom. you stay reasonable (even now adays...) and give pro and contras to different themes. I really like that about your channel. stay reasonable and true and keep on going what you do
Love watching Sam paint, and he's gotten so good at talking to the audience. I found it funny he started with blending and he's wearing a camouflage-esqe shirt. OH NO! HE'S BLENDED HIMSELF!
Why has this video got 13 thumbs down the quality of it is exceptional, you have one of the best painters on the planet painting with perfect editing i would rate it 9/10 it would get a 10/10 but it wasn't long enough
Wow! My first thought was I can paint bases. But I learned two new tricks. I will try the rim of the base in the deepest shadow for closed systems like Star Saga. And to put the light on the base in front of the mimiature is something new I will definiatly try out. (Star Saga again, can't wait to start painting).
Sam, you are really great doing these videos. They are simple enough to understand but still teaches us new skills. I really hope you more regularly post tutorials on this channel. Or even better start up your own channel, I know I would sub day one.
If you're already registered in his classes, then you're one of the lucky ones. His three classes sold out in under two hours when AdeptiCon registration opened. I got into his second class, so I'm glad. Thanks for watching!
Yeah ? Let's make them work harder. Maybe it's so because does it really matter, everybody uses their own brushes and pigments that work for them. Plus these videos are FREE let's just be happy with that. Keep on keeping on Mr Lenz .
X.david Williams Yeah I agree. What’s with these guys wanting to try those brushes and see if they work for them? Just enjoy the video for what it is. Don’t let them know what would make you enjoy the channel more or what would make you subscribe. Brush list? Personally, I don’t even think you should be able to see the brushes, paints or the miniature in the video. Audio is unnecessary too.
Amazing tutorial. Looking forward for the next one. Because based on the final result it is seem to show me how I can make those skeletons stand out, like with eyes glowing effect. My only question - is it possible to provide conversion table for paints, because I own only Citadel ones, like many people here I assume, so it will be even more helpful! Thank again for the tutorial!
I have a decent amount of reaper paints ( got them at a good sale ). They are obviously thinner than GW and Vallejo, are they still okay for wet blending and feathering techniques with a little retarder or matte medium?
Prior to painting the test base, the base looks like it was misted with white, possibly with primer. Was this to break the surface tension of the base for the paint blending? Or was there another reason?
+rustedbeetle It was a white primer. Sam believes (as I do) that you always need to prime whatever you’re going to paint. I know some folks will paint on a bare model, but we don’t suggest it. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the clarification. Since it wasn't an even coat, I couldn't tell if coat was intentionally uneven to give more depth to the paint layer or if it was just a quick spray.
A really light dusting is enough to help the adhesion. With that texture and with how Sam was doing the light from the front of the base, spraying at an angle from the front will help bring out the texture. Kind of like doing zenithal priming. Pretty sure Atom did a vid on that a while back.
Great video. Sam is on of my favorite painters. He makes different techniques seem so accessible. I think the Shadespire tutorials are a good idea too. Sam, what kind of brushes are you using for the dry brushing in the video?
Any way to close the aperture on the lenses a bit? The depth of field was very shallow so the mini was out of focus in some shots (e.g. after painting the rim of the base).
So, aside from renewing my request for a bloopers video, I had another idea for a video topic. You could always do something fairly brief about painting ergonomics such as lighting sitting position table height Etc
My ergonomics are generally lousy, and my posture was terrible in the intros on that day because I threw my back out getting equipment out of the car. Thanks for watching!
Hi I'm new to this so sorry if I'm asking newbie questions are the skeletons your painting 28mm ? Are they compatible with wizkids and reaper bones miniatures?
Something I found in the 'Create' tab on the RUclips Creators Studio. Something licensed for use in videos. I think it had the word "march" in the title, actually. Thanks for watching!
Interesting to hear his comments on GW's usage of Black on the Base rim.... Because that's practically all they do now. We're far from the Goblin Green days.
+Malev Da Shinobi I thought the same thing, but if you go look at the newest releases on the GW site (other than Necromunda) they’re all brown or grey rims on the bases. Thanks for watching!
Yeah that was exactly my experience! It's oddly enough because I've mostly been in the WD's and interested in the Necromunda Releases like crazy it colored my vision. It seems like whomever is painting the specialist games chooses to do the black rim bases. But if it's coming from the GW studio teams it's certainly brown/grey. Really neat actually !
If you're going to glue the models on to the bases after you've painted the bases, it's best to try to scrape some paint off the base where the feet with touch. A plastic-to-plastic bond is best for CA glue. Thanks for watching!
I'm super new to miniature painting so I was wondering if there's a specific reason why sam and a couple of other pro painters I've seen don't use the citadel paints? Is it personal preference or is the citadel lower quality or something?
+Lazorz210 He uses a few of the Citadel paints in some of the upcoming videos. He just mostly uses P3 paints because of personal preference and because Privateer Press gave him a ton of paints after he won the P3 Grandmaster contest at Gen Con a few years ago. Thanks for watching!
I have been away from the hobby for 5 months (got burned out trying to paint two whole armies 'eavy metal style) are theese new models for a new army? (AoS that is)
These are models for Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire. It’s a new gateway game between board games and miniatures games that uses small amounts of models. Take a look, you might enjoy it. Thanks for watching!
Sam's the miniature painting equivalent to Bob Ross, super chill and super good!
So true!
He's a combination of the Paint God (aka Duncan) and Bob Ross!
Between him and Sorastro its so relaxing and the techniques are TOP NOTCH
Just sprinkle in some happy little gravestones...and don't be afraid of the dark.
I like this guy, he seems really chill
He *is* really chill. Thanks for watching!
No problemo!
Oh my god thank goodness for this video. PAINTING WITH THE PRO IS THE BEST
I'm glad you enjoy it. The next one will be in two weeks. Thanks for watching!
Very new to mini painting, and I was hoping for more with Sam, because I'd devoured all of the old videos. Thank you both so much for taking the time to make such practical tutorials.
Stephen Powell - Yes, yes! Thank you thank you.
I love Sam so chill could watch all day
Love that Sam is back. His smile is well welcomed.
Sam - Atom : I wanted to let you know that all of Sam's other videos were not helpful and too long. This video was perfect. MrChapster - spit shade is what I know this by with illustration ink on paper. Like comics and tattoo flash.
Looks absolutely fantastic. I love Sam's painting style.

Nice to see Sam back on the channel.
Sam has quickly become my hero! Thanks for doing these!!
Sam has really improved his on-screen personality. Looks much more comfortable. I feel like he did a better job being clear and explaining the steps as well. Really looking forward to more!
Thanks for sharing your skills with us Sam.
KentuckyFriedGamers - Seconded!
Hey atom and sam! I really really do enjoy sams tutorials. he has a great energy explaining. I wish sam would do more tutorials on the tabletopminions though. thanks for all the great, awesome videos!
We shot four on that day and we'll be doing more going forward. I'm glad you like them. Thanks for watching!
I really like that you don't put out oppinions, atom. you stay reasonable (even now adays...) and give pro and contras to different themes. I really like that about your channel. stay reasonable and true and keep on going what you do
Great to see Sam back!
Watching Sam work never gets old. *thumbsup*
I appreciate how Sam uses cheap Hobby Lobby brushes (as do I) and still gets super-impressive results. Hopefully beginners will take note of this.
Early on in the video I thought I am not sure I like the style....by the end I was in love with it just wow!
I am happy that the "Painting with the Pro" series is back.
Thought Sam wasn't coming back until next year? What a surprise! Started painting my Shadespire stuff, Slacking a bit but this should help.
Early Xmas present? Thanks for watching!
Love watching Sam paint, and he's gotten so good at talking to the audience. I found it funny he started with blending and he's wearing a camouflage-esqe shirt. OH NO! HE'S BLENDED HIMSELF!
Sam's back! Brilliant!
This was very enjoyable, great work by both of you, looking forward to the entire series of videos.
I got through half of the video before I realized that Sam was more than just a Head and hands. That realtree is good stuff.
David Mooney - HaHa Hahahaha.
Why has this video got 13 thumbs down the quality of it is exceptional, you have one of the best painters on the planet painting with perfect editing i would rate it 9/10 it would get a 10/10 but it wasn't long enough
So glad he's back :D
There is sooo much to learn watching this video. Love it!

Yes, the painting light to dark from front to back was a new one on me, too. Thanks for watching!
Brilliant video guys, I was hoping to avoid Shadespire but I love the Sepulchral Guard, I'm pretty certain my Undead will need a warband soon...
+Robert Wallace They’re awesome models, I can’t wait to paint my own. Thanks for watching!
Awesome work, as usual, and very easy to follow along....
Ye-ha, Sam's back!, love it
sam, god among men. the jimmi hendrix of painting.
Great review of basic I suggesting to every new player/painter I know thanks.
Thank you Sam for teaching me to rim like a pro >_
Sam, you are really great doing these videos. They are simple enough to understand but still teaches us new skills. I really hope you more regularly post tutorials on this channel. Or even better start up your own channel, I know I would sub day one.
great vibe, good hobby tipps really like this one
Ironically I just posted my first video with a REAL based mini for board games. Always enjoy watching Sam on here :)
Mesmerising to watch
Great video, I haven't done wet bending on my bases. I will need to try that on my new models. Thanks again Sam. :-)
Sam is back!
I like how Sam uses multiple paint brands per session.
Sam’s back!!!!!
Great video Sam.
Great video, I'm looking forward to taking classes with Sam at Adepticon
If you're already registered in his classes, then you're one of the lucky ones. His three classes sold out in under two hours when AdeptiCon registration opened. I got into his second class, so I'm glad. Thanks for watching!
yes! finally 'painting with the pro' is back
"... and some... umm... rimwork"
I see what you did there, well played.
yay Sams back!!!!
Great video! I also got some Bob Ross vibes haha Just waited for some 'Happy little trees" or maybe "Happy little moss" haha Look forward to more!
Sam's back!
Great Tips - Thanks!
Thanks for a great video!
Could you put together a list of the paints and size of brushes he uses in the description? That would be great!
DarkYokuo I second that!
Yeah, great if you can share a brush list. Curious what brushes he's using. Great tutorials!
Yeah ? Let's make them work harder. Maybe it's so because does it really matter, everybody uses their own brushes and pigments that work for them. Plus these videos are FREE let's just be happy with that.

Thank you for this video.
Would you advise using glazes to give you more time for wet blending?
Awesome work

My only question - is it possible to provide conversion table for paints, because I own only Citadel ones, like many people here I assume, so it will be even more helpful! Awesome video. Is it difficult to use the wet blend technique on a base with much texture?
Shaolink
The wetter, the easier it is, but you can lose some of the detail. Just make sure that it is even.
I have a decent amount of reaper paints ( got them at a good sale ). They are obviously thinner than GW and Vallejo, are they still okay for wet blending and feathering techniques with a little retarder or matte medium?

it looks like a basic zenithal prime job.
Great video. Sam is on of my favorite painters. He makes different techniques seem so accessible. I think the Shadespire tutorials are a good idea too.
Sam, what kind of brushes are you using for the dry brushing in the video?
nice video, ive really slaked on my painting. I am sadly one of those that if i never get to play i have no desire to finish my minis.
Huzzah! Top notch sir,
Is he just the nicest guy or what?! I'll buy you a beer or five if you ever come to Denmark, Sam.
Love the Fat Yuan Yuan boxes in the back... lol
Any way to close the aperture on the lenses a bit? The depth of field was very shallow so the mini was out of focus in some shots (e.g. after painting the rim of the base).

Hi I'm new to this so sorry if I'm asking newbie questions are the skeletons your painting 28mm ? Are they compatible with wizkids and reaper bones miniatures?
May I know what brush in what size he is using?? many thanks orz
Hello, first offfffff GREAT CHANNEL! What kind of brushes do you use, they looks like the soft ones, what is the size and which brand? THANKS!
I bought these figures so I can just have a go at painting them. love Skelly's
What's the music from the end of the video? I like it's gloomy march feel.
Something I found in the 'Create' tab on the RUclips Creators Studio. Something licensed for use in videos. I think it had the word "march" in the title, actually. Thanks for watching!
Dou you always start from the base up Sam?
What kind of brushes are those he used?
Hello there. What material is covering Sam’s wetpalette?
Penso un semplice panno assorbente e carta forno. Non costa nulla farne una in casa
Non è carta forno normale con quella texture, ho anche io una wetpalette...
Anche a me sembra carta forno. Probabilmente la differenza nella texture la fa il materiale che c'è sotto :)
Si ma non credo cambi tanto....perlomeno io mi trovo benissimo con panna assorbente + carta forna tagliati a misura
Lucio's Workshop idem, spugna e carta assorbente in contenitore sigillato :)
Interesting to hear his comments on GW's usage of Black on the Base rim.... Because that's practically all they do now. We're far from the Goblin Green days.
hmm, after browsing the webstore, there is actually a ton of Brown bases. Interesting !
+Malev Da Shinobi I thought the same thing, but if you go look at the newest releases on the GW site (other than Necromunda) they’re all brown or grey rims on the bases. Thanks for watching!

Any issues gluing the figure to the base after it's painted then? I know these guys have pegs, but what about regular figures, is just CA glue ok?
If you're going to glue the models on to the bases after you've painted the bases, it's best to try to scrape some paint off the base where the feet with touch. A plastic-to-plastic bond is best for CA glue. Thanks for watching!
Hello ! Somebody can tell me what brand brush he uses ?
What kind of brush is he always using?
Great video
Gotta say, not painting the rims Black was a subtle but good difference. I will be implementing a more neutral color in the future.
which brush is he using there?
Am I applying this it 2 thin coats
Not too shabby!
Yes!
Hey Sam what's your preferred paint brand?
Tau for sale!
What brushes are they?
Great video! FYI GW paint their 30k miniatures with black rims.
Citadel paints are fine quality. They are slightly more expensive than many other lines, but there is definitely nothing wrong with them.
It's largely down to personal preference.
Thanks for watching!
hey, someone finally said it right. its as if the rest of the internet didnt have to read E.A. Poe in high school.
As a beginner, I try to view all the techniques I want to try to git gud at through a Sam shaded Lenz.
Special brushes? Or just good old craft store brushes?
omg its just s head floating!
"Ah yes, the sound of drybrushing..."
Nice, lol
I've been an undertaker for 24 years it's pronounced sup-licker. Like what you would say to another painter, "hey! Sup licker?" Love your channel...
Brushlicker!
Really though, is there something I'm missing here? What is he doing?
Samson looks buff AF, has he been working out? :P
Yeah, he has been working out. Thanks for watching!
TAU FOR SALE! Lol. I’ll never forget that
