If Australia was colder I can see them being a major hockey country. Something about the culture (from an ignorant outside perspective) supports both the skill and the physicality.
Both my daughters have completely fallen in love with playing ice hockey here in Perth, Western Australia. There’s quite a thriving & growing community here in Australia, especially in Perth. The sister of the headstand guy plays on one of the teams my daughters play in & she is quite formidable having played NCAA hockey for a couple of years in North America as well as represented Australia at IIHF World Championships. The men’s national league AIHL & the women’s national league AWIHL both have a certain number of imports allowed on each team so there’s sometimes some good talent coming down to Aus (before COVID).
