  • In part 2 of this series on how to easily germinate Japanese maple seeds, I show you how I plant them and what I grow them in. We talk about what time of the year I started these seeds, the current temperatures outside, the soil or medium I plant them in, and how I get them germinating. Spoiler Alert: After stratification, these red leaf japanese maple seeds started germinating in the refrigerator!

After grad school (mid 70s) I went to work for Bruce Briggs (Briggs Nursery, Olympia, Washington) as the plant propagator . I knew very little about propagation; but lucky for me, Bruce knew more than just about anyone I had/have ever known. One of the first things he taught me was how to germinate Maple seed. Just about everything Mike says in these videos is spot on. The one thing about the seed germinating in the fridge, it is normal using this method of stratifying for this to occur. The one thing about Mike rushing to plant them--not necessary. Most years my seed would have 1/2 inch to sometimes 1 1/2 inch roots by the time I got them planted. And I grew many thousand of them every year for over 30 years and in 4 different states.

Since I’ve retired plants have became my hobby, Your site is a common since approach .
To all the novice ; best water to use for success is natural rain water.
Best soil to use is decade leafs found in your gutter.
biggest fail is trying to grow to many different seeds at one time.
Seeds from all sources of life were not all meant to resurrect it’s kind.
and finally having a “green thumb” so to speak.............incumbent to patients and passion.
Mike has all of the above and 100% validated information.
From a scale of 1-10 I give Mike 10 green thumbs up!

Also I use small scoopers to put in fertilizers, plant food and other gardening things. I use a large tin can to keep in the bag my peat comes in. Wow, it is endless, but I need more and more storage places, lol lol (not to mention cups. bowls, even the shopping bags that are made from fabric that looks like yard cloth)

+Carol - wow, that's a good idea - As folks say that styrofoam won't break down for millenia, how could it hurt to use those "packing peanuts" for improved drainage in the bottom of large containers of at least the ornamental plants?
That idea sort goes in favor of my environmental consciousness and 'contrary' to an 'all-natural' approach at the same time - because even if one chooses not to buy packing peanuts, one still ends up with them from other people! Those styrofoam "peanuts" probably wouldn't hurt my vegetable plants (and would help drainage at the same time), but certainly I don't have to be super-concerned about putting a layer of them in the bottom of the container of an ornamental plant.

Mike Kincaid ......oh where to start! the soil was bad, it drained coffee looking crap out of it for the first few weeks that was sticky and stained whatever it touched. then within a month the soil hardened and clogged. my screen was too fine in the bottom of my pots. the fertilizer pellets were the bargan kind that just turned to mush. since then ive used safe t sorb from the auto parts store its kind of like fired clay that can hold six times its weight in water (sifted) I found a cactus mix that I had to sift, dry, then sift just to use the fine pine bark pea gravel and earthworm castings. I think this will work, ive researched the crap out of it and this seems like a winner

Hi, Mike! I have collected some of those seeds directly from Japan during a trip. I will try to make a bonsai with them. The problem is that I live in Brazil, where temperatures are around 20 - 30 °C. What do you suggest me to do. Do I need to put them in the refrigerator to germinate? Then can I do the same you have done and leave the pot outside the refrigerator to grow in our climate? I am very lost here and maybe you could help me. Thank you! Murillo.

Do the same thing I did here to get them to germinate. As for how they'll do in your climate after germination, I'm not sure but I've heard that they can take warmer climates too.

My Hubs bought me 2 Acer trees today they only grow about 5 feet. I have wanted Acers for quite some time. I wanted a 20ft one but we do not have a large garden lol. Hey Mike
So I got my grow light, and brought the Seedlings inside because we had another Noreaster here in nY with 12 more inches of snow. So I couldn't take the chance leaving them outside because I don't have anything to put them in to protect from he frost.
But in just 24 hours under the grow light, these things have really taken off...They are sprouting and growing higher like crazy. Yellow leaves went dark green or red, While a about a third are sill just starting to come out of the ground, 2/3rds of the seedlings are out and up with two leaves out. Some red, some light red, some dark green.
I put saran wrap on the top of the tote under the grow light because the the original top was solid white, and I wanted to keep the green house affect going. Its working great and I put Tin foil all around the lights to keep the light in.
What i have also noticed though is that the top soil is inside a few of the totes is starting to dry out a little bit. Getting a little crusty in some places. Still moist in others
    1) My question is when do i start to add water again to these seedlings. I don't want to over water them, so Should I do a quick spray like last time in each tote or just wait a little longer.
    2) I also noticed that in Part 3 of your video's, that at some point in the updates, you started adding a small amount of fertilizer, or the white apex pellets to the totes. Im just wondering at what point in the seedling process to I add more water, and when do you add that small amount of fertilizer. I can't find that apex brand. Will any fertilizer do, or do you recommend one?
Thanks...This is so much fun. Im so happy for my little trees...:) Cant wait to see how much they grow, and when the new leaves come in.
Oh and have you found that the little leaves that come out the darkest red when the trees are just seedlings become the ones that have the darkest red when they get older? Im curious if there is any correlation at all to when they first come out and what they look like later
    Dan

Looks great Dan! Keep it going! Now that they've sprouted, you'll want to slowly acclimate them to normal humidity levels but slowly (over a few days) removing the plastic wrap. Start fertilizing with any slow release fertilizer when the first true leaves begin to emerge but don't over do it on the fertilizer. Keep the soil moist but don't over water, it's ok if the top of the soil gets a little dry as long as the roots are moist. Make sure you have drainage holes in the bottom of your totes so you can place them outside when it warms up and just water the tote like any other potted plant. When you first take them outside in the spring, place them in a shady location and slowly acclimate them to more light. It's also ok that they're planted so close together because you will let them grow in there until the first winter after they've gone dormant and the roots are hard and strong (then you can pull them apart like I did in part 5). I do find that the darkest leaves tend to be the most red when mature but not in all cases so you'll have to wait until they are a little older and growing outside in the sun to get a really good idea of what they'll look like. Also, some of them will emerge deep red in the spring but green up more in the summer and then turn a bright red again in the fall. Some will stay red all summer. It will take time to figure out which seedlings will do what. Great job!

If they are last years seeds then you may need to stratify them for a couple months in a moist and cool environment. If they are new seeds just starting for this year then they aren't mature enough to germinate.

Would Japanese Maple tree seeds be viable when they are gathered at the end of August in British Columbia Canada? End of August is the cusp of fall in Canada.

My best success has been from collecting fresh seeds in the fall and putting them right in the fridge while still moist and not dried out. Seeds have different requirements for germination. The method in the video works great for maple seeds but ginko might be different. Here's a link for ginko seed germination: espacepourlavie.ca/en/growing-ginkgo-seed I would just make sure not to let them dry out. In my experience, seeds lose viability when dried. Sup mike hope all is well ? Just out of curiosity how much and would you sale me some of the red maple tree seeds I saw on one of your videos ? The tree seedlings were really beautiful and red. I wanna say it was part 3 or 4 where you set 3 trees aside. Keep up the great work 👍👍👍

Mike Kincaid :ay Mike thank you for your reply. That would be great if you don’t mind me asking how much would you charge me for let’s say 3 seedlings ? You know I just 2 different types of maple seeds in water I’m going to see if the sprout. Let me ask you do you think maple trees would do good in south Texas ?

After watching this video, my kids and I collected a bunch of seeds from big tooth maples native to the mountains here in Utah. I put them in the fridge wet as you mentioned back in October. It is now the end of January and I have several that have sprouted and have root shoots about an inch long. It is still very cold outside and will be for at least another couple months. Should I just plant them in pots and put in front of a window until March or April?

Awesome! Yes, you can plant them now and keep in a well lit window. They’ll grow really nicely under a grow light.

@@MikeKincaid79 thank you for your videos. The method worked really well. I'm working to reforest a fairly large area from construction that hasn't had trees on it for the last 15 years since they were cut down so I plan to do this with big tooth maples and scrub oak (both already here.) I've had decent luck with sprouting the acorns from them so far. I will be trying to do both in mass quantities each year. Just trying to figure out how early in the season I can plant them all. It's much easier to carry 500 acorns and big tooth maple sprouts than individual pots haha. We also have ground squirrels that I don't want to mess with them so a few variables to deal with :)

Do you think I could collect the maple seeds in October, put them in the freezer for 2 months, and then move to the refrigerator for three or so months? If so, would I get them wet before the freezer treatment or after?

Mike, is there any other alternative of pine bark?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  4 года назад +1

Yes, use anything that drains well, holds moisture, and is inert.

Hi, I have collected the seeds in Nov, but I didn't place them in fridge, just somewhere indoor. So what should I do now? Are the seeds still alive?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 года назад

Did they dry out? If so, then I'd rehydrate them by soaking in water overnight and then place then continue on as I did in the videos. Once they dry out, the germination rate seems to drop off and sometimes it will take 2 years for them to germinate.
