  • For about two decades, China has been funding development projects across the globe. An uptick in spending happened in 2013, with Chinese leader Xi Jinping proposing the creation of what China called the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, a land and sea initiative. This concept has evolved over the last 10 years into what is now known as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Observers say China's strategy to globalize may be entering a new phase. China had been building and changing so fast before 2013. It shared its fast development with all other countries, especially in Africa. Before 2013, there were relatively few developments in Africa and US/the west did not see any future doing business in Africa. It's better now that the west sees China as a competitor and wants to do business in Africa now more than ever. Let China and US compete and develop the whole world faster and better.

China has already been very close by, roads and ports in Jamaica. Speaking for my self (not a Jamaican) I am concerned over loan terms, China’s pursuit of other of Jamaica’s assets (land, minerals) and the conditions that specify Chinese workers on the majority of BRI projects, especially in countries where the jobs would help the local economies immensely . . see also Kenya.

A project on the scale of the BRI cannot have a 100 percent success rate. Of the thousands of BRI projects, a few are bound to stumble and collapse. Nevertheless, the BRI success rate is astounding.
Critics of the BRI disingenuously focus on the few failures to suggest that the BRI is not working very well. They are jealous. They are paranoid. They are childish.
Over the past 20 years, the West has launched several initiatives similar to the BRI. None of them have delivered.
All of them are based on loans to developing countries. Why are they not "debt traps?" Why is only the BRI a debt trap? The hypocrisy is monumental.
