Check chapter 6 of my book for a complete discussion of portrait equipment (link in the description). For me, I'm all about the 70-200 f2.8 zoom. Being able to quickly zoom from a body to a headshot is really important.
Re: non-L lenses, that would only be an issue if you were using JPG, and I've always shot raw. Fringing isn't a top priority when I choose a lens--it's more about sharpness, focusing speed, build quality, weight, handling, etc. but then again, I've never had a problem with it.

Tony, I absolutely love your videos and I just recently bought your book. Great stuff! Your videos helped me decide on the 6D over the 5D Mk III. The built in wifi so I can simulate the "eye-fi" feature without the card and the excellent image quality was such a good decision. I LOVE seeing my shots immediately on my Nexus 9 tablet! Also I have about $1000 left for a great piece of glass for some of my city/landscape shots. Keep up the great work!

Nice review, though I can tell you're not a video guy.
The iii has massive improvements that are essential for any DP. First up, almost zero moire and aliasing issues (this IS noticeable). Secondly, timecode. Thirdly the HDMI output sends a 4:2:2 colour-space video to a recorder like the Ninja, which is broadcast quality, and accepted by all broadcasters. The Sony's you mention do not offer decent enough quality video, and have awful moire issues. Video cameras may have 'caught up', but are massively over-priced for the average user. The C300 is probably the next step up from the 5D (I own one, it's great), but that'll cost you about £11k compared to the iii's £2k.
The ii (which i've used to death), is unbearable for video. 12 minute limit is yuck, no clean HDMI out, AWFUL moire (see my venice at night video), and no 1080p Raw ability with Magic lantern.
You're an awesome photo guy, but I'd leave the video advice to us DPs ;) BUY A iii FOR VIDEO.

I use the thumb controller, but I think you have to turn it on to control the AF points... Set it on the C.FN2:Disp./Operation menu, Custom Controls, and then the setting in the lower-right corner. Then you can move the AF point around with the joystick; it's pretty quick.

If you found this recently, finishing reading my comment
Get a 5D mark III and get an SD card and a CF card, and a decent EF lens (pref one with IS) and google Magic Lantern, find the forums, and find the most recent version for Danne's build.
You will have a gorgeous Full frame RAW video camera, and with a little Post process you can even make clean 4k at insane bitrates and clarity.
The only limiting factor is the cards write speeds, and the need for an external monitor ( like any good Vid camera).
Cards are easily available for great prices, especially Komputerbay.
With this you can have a cinema grade film camera, for little to no money, and with a wide range of glass it can use.
For more examples to the quality ( mind you with youtubes compression) then search for 5D3 5.7k or 5D3 UHD RAW for video samples

Hi Tony, great video. Been a fan for a while. So I'm thinking about upgrading to the Mark III from a t7i. I'm not a professional shooter but want to upgrade to full frame. Is worth it to upgrade if I'm just a beginner and just do this for a hobby or should I just stick with my t7i and invest in some L lenses? I love the t7i but really hate the crop factor. I to us a deal for a Mark III owned for a year and not sure of shutter count with 24-105mm L lens for $1600, is this a good deal? Should I jump on it and upgrade? Please let me know? Thanks guys! Keep up the good work.

Hi, Lou. I have another video comparing the 7D to most of the other Canon cameras; you might watch that. I'm not sure what body you're using now, but you probably wouldn't see a big improvement going to the 7D. I think you'd have to spring for a 6D to see a real improvement in indoor volleyball... but that other video has lots of good detail. Hope that helps!

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 лет назад

Yeah, check my other videos--there's a more recent one that compares the 6D, 5D2, and 5D3. I generally prefer the 6D over the 5D2, though used 5D2s are going for $1200 now, which is a great deal.

Great video and still relevant in 2019. I currently own two 5D mark 2 cameras. Why 2, well it saves quite a bit of lens swapping in the field. Love my mark 2s and have no intention of changing any time soon as mostly I shoot landscape and urban landscape and the mark 2 cameras do all that very well. Was thinking of upgrading but after seeing your video I just don't see the point if there is no visible image quality difference. Thanks for a great video.

The biggest factor is going to be the types of photography you plan to do. If you're doing landscapes or portraits, get the 5D2. If you're shooting action, you should spring for the 5D3. Like the 5D2, the 6D's continuous focusing system is really only useful on the center point, so you're limited when composing action shots. However, it has some nice gadgets, like Wi-Fi and GPS.
Anyway, if you mention what your goals are, I can provide better recommendations.

Thanks for this review. I'm currently tossing up whether to upgrade my 5D mark II to a mark III. I shoot weddings and portraits, and whenever I shoot a wedding and see the potential shots I have missed due to the poor AF I want to just rush out and buy the mark III straight away. I know how good that AF is since I own a 7D and its AF is superb. Another reason I'd consider the mark III is high ISO noise... how does it handle ISO 6400? This is where the mark II becomes less acceptable for me, and noise ninja can only do so much. How is the detail retention at these higher ISO's?

I've shot weddings with both cameras, for the record.
My tests, and DxOs, show no significant difference in image quality below ISO 50,000. But yes, I totally agree that the 5D3's focusing is far superior and that makes a huge difference for wedding photographers, which is why you and I both recommend the 5D3 for pro wedding photogs.

Thanks for the very helpful review, Tony! You helped me decide on the mark II. I started out with a basic Sony A57 a few months ago mainly for video use, then I realized I love portrait photography, so I sold the camera and am saving up for the mark II and probably the 70-200/2.8 II lens. Do you have any recommendation about lenses for portrait photography? I really loved what I saw from the 85/1.2 L also.

I'm definitely excited about the raw video... even for the simple videos I do, when I'm outdoors, I'd love to have the extra dynamic range.
Maybe in the future once they have a workflow developed around it, it'll change my recommendation... but I suspect that's at least 3-6 months out, and nobody really knows whether it'll be suitable for professional or amateur video until then.
    But, it's really exciting.

Hello Tony. Compliments of the season! I have a 5D iii and considering a wide angle lens, the sigma 12-24mm ef (not ART) specifically; cannot afford the ART now. I shoot mostly for fun now, although I did shoot a friend's wedding. I wasn't too happy with the shots, a lot came out a bit dark. I used a Canon 24-70mm L and a canon flash. Please kindly advise me on best affordable lens, especially a wide angle lens, to use with my camera.

Great reviews on the Canon 5D MkIII Tony, it's refreshing to hear such open and unbiased opinions.
I own 2 5D MkII's and was thinking about upgrading to the MkIII but after watching this video, the money is staying in the bank.
Sure more cross type focus points would be a help, but it's a lot of money to spend on the only feature I think would be of any benefit to me.
I think I'll wait until the MkIV is launched.
Thanks from me and my bank manager.

  • @TonyAndChelsea
    @TonyAndChelsea  11 лет назад

It's not just you, but it's really just one of many features you need. For example, if the camera doesn't have a good AF system, it won't be useful for wildlife. If the controls are terrible, you'll be stuck with automatic settings. There's a lot more than image quality.

Hello Tony! I own the 5D III. 1. What are you thoughts on primes vs zooms for portrait photography? 2. Ken Rockwell says that because the MIII has color-fringe correction, that one could get away with using non-L lenses whereas the MII had to have them to produce good results. What are you thoughts on that?

Quick question tony if you don't mind answering. I plan to finally go ahead and start shooting RAW/Lightroom editing. I do plan to purchase a CF card , to compensate for the writing/reading of RAW files. Do you recommend I buy a card reader or will I be fine just transferring the RAW files directly from the camera via USB cable?
The camera I will be using is a 5D mark iii, which I'd imagine with the faster processor should help speed up with transferring RAW files. One major advantage I can think of transferring straight from the camera is that you'll lessen the chance of breaking pins on the CF card , but I'd imagine you have to give up transferring speed.

Get the Mark II, used if you can find it. If you said you were doing wildlife and sports, I'd push you to a 7D. The Mark II is definitely the better choice for portraits, and the AF system is fine for that. You'll finally take advantage of your 24-70.
    You might also grab a 70-200 f2.8; Tamron makes a $750 model.
BTW, check Chapter 6 in Stunning Digital Photography (link in the description) for more information about portraits and portrait equipment (including studio lighting).

Tony, I have the 5D III and it's a great camera to hold, to use, high ISO performance, great for HDR etc. The two things that disappoint me are the in camera JPEG's, which are worse that my 7D, too soft - and the dynamic range, which I don't think is that great. Have you found the same thing? Thanks.

Raw image quality is indistinguishable at ISO 25,000 and below, according to both my own tests (which included side-by-side examination by a panel of pros) and tests from organizations such as DXO.
I do talk about the vastly superior focusing speed of the 5D Mark III and specifically recommend it for wedding photographers, so we agree on that point... you make it sound like I think the cameras are identical in every way; that's definitely not the case.

Well, I don't know your shooting style, so I really can't say. Sounds like you have a good setup. You seem to prefer primes to zooms, and your 135 f1/2 is already an awesome portrait lens, so maybe you don't even need the 70-200.
Maybe you don't need to upgrade at all. The question is, how is your current gear failing or frustrating you? How can your money best be spent to improve your results? Maybe it's on lighting or software...

Tony, I'm so glad I checked out RUclips and ran across your comparison reviews of the Mark III and Mark II..... I've been hemming and hawing over the two for a while... I'm stepping up from my 50D crop (which I love) and have the 24-105L and 200 2.8L glass. Since I'm not technically a "pro" and I'm not relying on photography for income, you made the decision for me: 5D Mark II.

Thank you Tony for this review. I've been trying to nail down a 5D mkIII for cheap but have run into problems which is making me second guess my decision to purchase one. I'm thinking 6D with a 24-105 or a used 5D mkII.

    Hey Tony!
Though I already own the 6D (as I mentioned some time earlier) I'm still highly anticipating your professional 6D review - yeeeha! I'll be happy to see it once it's out.

Really appreciate your very candid revue and recommendations Tony. It is very timely that I found you - presently evaluating what camera system to purchase as a major step up (and likely a one time step) into a very good DLSR system. Primary focuses are landscape and night photography (and some macro). The system does need to be an "all-rounder" with regular duty in local sports and events. Still a bit torn to be honest though the dollar savings going the used MKII does seem very attractive.

Tony - thanks for the video. I have been going back and forth on my first DSLR - first was focused on a used D7000. Then reconsidered based on video the 5DII - and actually able to get new at $1899. Then as my budget was increasing I ended up purchasing a 5DIII refurb for $2600. I was told be Adorama - that it is manufacturer refurb ad the sensor is brand new and camera in excellent condition. Does the camera at this price point make more sense ~$600 more than the 6D.
    Thankls - SJ

Hi Tony thanks for your answer. My point is: I have a 5D MK II and these lenses: 50mm 1.4 + 85mm 1.4 + 24-70 2.8 + 135 mm 1.2 + 100mm macro. At this point I am asking myself how to upgrade even the camera and lens. MKIII maybe and selling the II? Or Selling 2 lensens and get as you suggested the 70\200 mm?
Really not sure what to do, camera, or lenses?
Thanks so much, really appreciate your answers

It's glow wire. Chapter 10 in Stunning Digital Photography has a detailed description of how to do it.

Do you ever use the 50 ISO option on the Mark iii? And do you recommend using it? Great video by the way! Thanks!

CReyes811 It's an extended ISO, which means it's exactly like overexposing a picture taken at ISO 100. It reduces the dynamic range by a stop, which isn't so bad, because the 5D3 gives you about two stops of data in raw files over visible whites.

Hi Tony. Love your videos! I have found them very educational. I purchased the Canon Vixia HF G10 camcorder last year. Although the picture and sound quality is good, it is next to impossible to get shallow depth of field for interviews. In fact, the depth of field is so wide that it distorts anything in the background and makes it appear almost miniature! So, I pre-ordered the Canon 70 D which hopefully will cover all the bases. Do you know anything about this camera?

Definitely get an f/2.8 instead of the f/4--the extra stop makes a big difference.
Instead of the Canons, I'd recommend the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG HSM OS FLD, $1249. Great lens, and it has IS in your price range.

    Hi Tony,
What Tripod would you recommend for a Canon Mark III ON A cANON zOOM lend ef 70-300MM 1: 4-5.6 Lens?

Check my Canon camera round-up video. The 5D Mark III is definitely my favorite camera, but it's not the right camera for most people.

Hey Tony, loved the video I just had a quick question I was hoping you could answer. Im a kid who teaches myself everything photography & videography. As a student I am low on cash ha but for the past years I have been interested in the 5d mk2 then mk3 came out. I currently have a t2i which I love but seems to be limiting in areas. My question is, I have heard buying used cameras may not be the greatest since the cameras "life" may be impaired, as in how many more shots it has left. Thoughts?

What would be a good Card to use with 5d MK3 ? I am using a 90mb/s card but it struggles after 14 shots (raw). I am looking for something which I can use when I use high speed bursts.

It's tough, because I really need IS/VC on that lens, which is why I use the 24-105. I'd also really like that extra stop, though. I was really excited when Tamron's came out, but I have to say, as nitpicky as it sounds, I can't work with the circular bokeh. I'm not a bokeh snob, but it's so strange that I know I'd have to Photoshop it all out for every picture, and that would just be too time consuming.
But for portraits and weddings, you don't really need the IS/VC. Just get the Canon.
