i just bought the 814xl. when i turn my shutter angle onto indoor mode, the camera has this internal humming sound, and it only stops when i push it back to daylight mode. any idea why this might be happening?
This is an amazing camera, but 100$ is reeeeeally EXPENSIVE. A much cheaper way to shoot super 8 is just cutting 2x8 super fomapan r, mounting into reusable cartridge and developing at home.
For now I’m probably gonna purchase the regular version of the 1014 since the XLS version is currently out of my budget. But maybe some time in the future I’ll have enough dough to pony up for one. As for S8 cameras they seem more reliable than the Beaulieu 4008 series.
Just FYI frame rate doesn’t have anything to do with how much light goes in a picture. it’s Shutter speed. lower the shutter the more light is allowed inside. higher the shutter, the crispier image you get but you sacrifice light.
You must be used to making videos with mirrorless cameras where you set the shutter speed in terms of fractions of a second (eg; 1/60th/sec). With video cameras you set the shutter in terms of degrees of a circle (eg; 180 degrees). The term ‘shutter angle’ comes from film cameras like this super 8; where the shutter is a rotating circle with a wedge cut out to let the light hit the film. When the circle spins it exposes the film through the open wedge and then when it spins to the side that blocks light the mechanism advances the film. The speed of the circular shutter is directly and mechanically linked to the mechanism which advances the film. To put this into mirrorless terms filming at 24fps with a 180 degree shutter would effectively be filming at 1/48th sec. If you doubled the frame rate to 48fps the shutter angle is still at 180 degrees but now the effective shutter speed would equal 1/96th sec. So on this Super 8 camera when you 1/2 the frame rate from 18fps to 9fps you’re doubling the time each frame is exposed to light. Frame rate does factor in to how much light hits the film.
how do you know if you’re under or overexposed? what is the number inside the view finder that you should be at when filming outside on a sunny day? or what do these numbers mean? id hate to spend a $100 per film to try to figure this out.
@@MrDukeSilverr thanks for reply - I’m curious about the numbers that appear inside the view finder which he mentions at 8:36 - i recently found it at the 26:00 mark in this video… ruclips.net/user/livelfpxj0vXdLY?si=FeR-A6BvAPhSxjs-
@@Chekmate99 the numbers are probably like the light meter of any other camera the f stops, so like 16, 11, 8, 5.6, 3.3 and so on, I think those are indicators as to how open or closed the aperture is, you can see when looking directly through the lense not the view finder that it’ll close or open depending on what f stop you have dialed, so like 3.3 means a lot of light coming through
Hey chris I have a 1014 xls & the first time i shot with it everything went smoothly. Now it keeps telling me my film has ended after the first 10 seconds of filming. Any advice?
I've never used the Nizo 6080 but I'm sure it works well. I don't know exactly why this particular camera is so sought after, my only guess is that it was a widely used model and feels like it has good build quality when you hold it in your hand. Also I think it has more in camera options than the Nizo 6080 but that's just my guess.
Hey I've never tried shooting single frame on this so not 100% sure if you can or not. For stop motion I think it's more efficient/easier to just use a stills camera though, at least that's what I've found when doing stop motion in the past
@@ChrisOrrFilm Thanks for the quick response, I asked mainly as I’m interested in making a short film for this completion called straight 8 where you are challenged to make a film all edited in camera with no post production, they develop it for you so there is no way to edit in post. So I asked mainly to find out if the camera is capable of taking single frames, it’s fine if it doesn’t I just read that apparently it can but no video I’ve seen mentions it.
@@ChrisOrrFilm Managed to find more information on this, you can take single frames you just set the 2nd dial at the top to “s” to shoot single frames, this was literally one of the defining reasons of whether or not I was going to buy one so I’m glad I found this out.
Hi :) I just got this camera. I was wondering if it’s maybe not working properly. When I look through the viewfinder and slightly press the recording button the number lights up. I assume this is the light meter and should change but there is no move on numbers even this pointing the camera at different types of lights. Is this a sign it’s broken? Thank you
Yeah that’s probably the light meter you’re looking at. Does it have film in it when you’re changing exposure? It’s hard for me to say if it’s broken, I guess put some film in it and try it out. Once you get it developed if your film is way over or under exposed I guess that would mean something is broken. I’d also try putting new batteries in and seeing if that works.
make sure that the button for „auto“, „AE lock“, „manual“ is at „auto“. Then look through the viewfinder, slightly press the rec button and move the camera around in different positions (dark & light). If the lightmeter moves then it‘s ok.

I’m thinking about using this to film weddings? Would it be to risky do you think? Cause seems like there could be a lot of issues that could happen and I would hate for that to happen to the newly weds.
Well I'm sure you could shoot a wedding on it but I wouldn't for a couple reasons, the first being it's pretty expensive to buy the film + get it developed. Also you're just very limited on how much you can film since weddings are long so you'll probably burn a ton of film. That's also not including the fact that yes, I've had more issues with film cameras than digital so there's always a risk that something might not come out the way you want it. There's so many film matte overlays and grain textures you can get nowadays that people use in post to make it look like it was shot on film I'd just do that to be on the safer side.
I’ve shot 4 weddings with it and still am having troubles with how to really use the camera. It’s crazy how hard to get the settings right. Lighting. Focus etc. would recommend spending 400$ for testing before telling people you want to shoot their wedding
Hey Chris, jus finished my first cartridge. After I finished the film it said END. I kept filming to see what would happen. Is there any chance I film over the beginning like a dummy? I no longer said end and just kept going?
Yes. Slowmo is more frames per second, which when played back at 24fps gives slowmo, so you are using a lot more film. If you are shooting at 48fps instead of 24fps, you are consuming the film twice as fast
Hi there, thanks for the great tutorial. Just shot my first roll on this cam and a lot of the images came back out of focus. Is this something to do with macro mode and how do I know if its enabled? Hmm, that's strange. Yeah it sounds like some sort of internal issue going on. You're welcome to email me at chrisorr88@gmail.com but it may be an issue that's above my expertise.
Just my two cents... It sounds like your camera got a stuck "lap dissolve" button. That's my best guess. Could also be something in the electronics (it's CPU-controlled), which is worse... Anyway, same thing happens with my mint and fully operational 1014XL-S when I move the shutter lever to the "lap dissolve" position and activate the "lap dissolve" function by pressing the button. When that button is pressed, the camera continues running for a few seconds with the wind-up core stopped (to allow for rewinding of the "fade out" piece a few seconds later). The film is still being moved by the registration pin, and the shutter fades to black within a few seconds. After that the camera stops and auto-rewinds the "fade out" piece at high speed to double-expose it at the beginning of the next shot. The next shot automatically.begins with a fade-in, resulting in a lap dissolve.
