Sweetcorn and Tomatoes | Harvesting Corn | Digging Over | Green Side Up
Time to hatrvest the Sweetcorn, we have been eating it for a couple of weeks but it is time now to harvest and sort the rest, some will be eaten over the next couple of days on the cob, the rest will be blanched then some frozen on cobs, the rest removed from the cobs and frozen. The Tomatoes in the large Tunnel get some attention also.

Love the music, you really made me smile. I use wood shavings as a border and scattered about to stop slugs, although some come up. My corn is about 3 weeks behind but the weather is looking good in mid wales. traffic jam? what traffic jam? Just like with you - probably a sheep in the road. No motorways, no duel carriageways. Your trip must have been awful! Thank you for the video, I always feel encouraged.

Before they turn brown we pick some to steep as a tea.

My Tom's have done really well this year Steve , most of the country got blight , I have done sungold and gardeners delight, and 1 plum tom , but well pleased , every year is different

We did it a couple of weeks ago, freaked me out for days beforehand. I'm glad you and the Mrs are back home safe & sound x
I'm really pleased to say after growing Tomatoes for 4 years this is the first year they have gone RED. Lovely, juicy and tasty they are too. Steve you have helped me be a good gardener👍😀👍❤

I use organic wool slug pellets, has slow release food mixed in .
Glad you both made the journey there and back safely and really pleased you got to see your parents. Lots of clearing and bumper crop of sweetcorn too 🙂

Mix salt with vaseline and smire it around the beds, preferably at place where you don't get it on you, the slugs ar not gonna slug over the salty and greasy solution, it is cheap, non toxic and it last for a long time, can also put it on the edge of a container where the bottom ar cut out and then places around every single plant, just no leef can touch the ground then.
You don't have to blanch to freeze you can remove the tassels ( if you want) and just freeze in the husks in freezer bags doesn't get freezer burn can be cooked as usual🥰
I used to be a Chef and whilst training we learnt to blanch veg before freezing because bacteria is killed in the blanching process that is not necessarily killed by freezing. Later when defrosting the bacteria can multiply, it doubles every twenty minutes. In 8 hours 1 bacteria can become over 1 million. I know folk do it and with great success but I am kind of obligated to advise against it, it's not a legal thing, more of a responnsibility to do so. Thank you Cynthia for watching...Steve...😃

Omg Steve what a gong show, yes we are comfortable being at home and not going anywhere and it’s worrisome how quickly people forget what we have all just been through. Is that the new vehicle you got last year 🤬 not a good thing. Hope your parents are well and you were able to enjoy the visit regardless. I’m growing Picasso sweetcorn. It’s got a lovely purple hue to the stems and cobs - a bit more ornamental than your usual offerings. I’m gutted my outdoor tomato looked amazing beginning of August now I’ll be lucky to get anything off them, it’s the cold, wet weather I think, purple veining on leaves. Always next year!
My sweetcorn on my allotment all got destroyed by magpies. Well done on your corn harvest 🌽🌽

I know a couple of allotment gardeners that I follow have suffered blight. My tomatoes are in the garage, I'm taking no chances! Lol

Weirdly my outdoor tomatoes are bigger than the ones in the polytunnel. My aubergines in the polytunnel are big like boxing gloves
Lost all 28 tomato plants to blight, mt corn is just developing tassels at the top and I'm lower down in Lancashire. What feed have you been using. I use chicken pellets. Can I plant blight resistant toms in the same ground as my blighted toms?

How do I know if they are ready? Mine look about the same as yours but a few are still growing
Wow u got a great crop from the sweetcorn, shame about the tomatoes, u had loads of flowers on it, I got blight on mine, its a bit weird all the tomatoes I grew from see never got blight but the side shots did. Don't know weather it was just bad luck or some think else

Hi Steve..I’ve only grown tomatoes in pots…next year I have some raised bed containers which am trying to keep ‘no dig’…which is newish to me. Do you just cut the stem off the tomato plant at its base when finished growing? I’ve got parsnips and leeks which I’ll have to pull up in the beds presently but trying not to disturb too much . Have you any advice for me. Thanks
Yes with no dig it is best to cut plants off at soil level, anything below soil level will eventually rot down and become part of the active food chain in the soil which is the cornerstone of no dig.. With parsnips and leeks, use a garden fory gently to loosen the compost around the veg before gently pulling out, takes a little time and practice...Steve...😃

Would it be too late in the year to use Nematodes to get rid of the slugs instead of Slug pellets?
I think you would get some beneficial use using nematodes at this time of the year, as it turns cooler not so much. But it is a consideration. I stopped using Slug Pellets outside years ago now, and for this last 2-3 years only use them in Spring to protect young emerging seedlings on my hanging shelf or greenhouse bench at home. I dont mind losing a few plants to slugs as long as I still get a crop, hopefully these second plantings will do better...Steve...😃

What variety sweetcorn did you grow Steve?
The Sweetcorn was "Incredible F1", I have found this to be the best all round for me being so far North, I have tried a good many in the past...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp I'm currently harvesting F1 Rising Sun. Pretty happy with the results but yours look much better than mine.
@@danrdgreen Hi Dan, it is the protection I give them, the hot boxes as I call them. Sweetcorn is a big sail with shallow roots and the hot boxes give the corn extra warmth early on then with the lids off later on they stop the roots breaking due to "wind rock"...I swear by them...Steve...😃
@@GreenSideUp I kinda did the same but my hot boxes aren't up to scratch and need some love and attention to get better results. I also planted chard at the base of the plants which itself did really well but possibly took some of the goodness away from the corn ?! I am happy with my crop but will definitely be trying Incredible F1 next year.

@@weatherby1982 I'm sorry you do not like the music choices I make, may I suggest that is future you turn the volume down for the duration of the speeded up bit, it is there I always put music on, for entertainment purposes. Then you can concentrate on enjoying the gardening content. I think I said similar last time you did not like the music...Steve...😃
