I've trapped hundreds, maybe thousands, of rats over 30+ years. I use mostly Victor traps; occasionally i'll use a T-Rex for rats that may be "shy" of the Victors. I work in Florida where trapping in attics can get HOT; peanut butter is a great bait but in the heat it is easily licked off the bait pan without setting the trap off. My hack is to cut small pieces of cloth (I use terrycloth rags, or old t-shirts) roughly 1/2 inch by one inch, tuck them under the triangular "bait holder" on the bait pan, then push down on the triangle to lock the piece of rag in place. Then I smear peanut butter into the rag. Since a rat's natural reaction to a food source is to bite it and then run for cover (so other rats don't steal their food), when they try it with this setup they always set the trap off while their head is near the bait pan. I've found that this hack works for both full grown and juvenile rats. Wishing y'all good trapping!

I use super glue to attach a peanut half to the bait holder/trigger and a couple more peanut halves on the wood in the kill zone. I then apply peanut butter on top if the peanut on the trigger. Works for me. Your method sounds very effective. I'll have to try that.

On a comman mouse or rat trap , i smear peanut on the underside of the trigger . That way instead of them just licking the bait off they have to stick their snout under the trigger and trip it by pushing it up . Works well

I've had great success with Milk Duds. Soften the Milk Duds by microwaving in a glass with a little water in it for about 30 seconds, then form the caramel around the treadle. Cover the Milk Dud with a healthy coating of peanut butter. The smarter rats seem to be able to carefully lick plain peanut butter off the treadle without triggering the trap, but the caramel from a Milk Dud hardens so much that they end up pulling on it trying to get it loose, and then SNAP!!!

Great video. Love the PVC hack idea. Will definitely try it. Dry wall screws are fast to install. But I prefer to use nails spaced around 3/4" apart because it is easy to remove the dead rat just by flipping over the trap. Whereas with screws, it may be a little harder to remove the rat. Also, for a stronger kill bar, lift up the part of the spring that's not attached to the kill bar and place a couple of thick washers between the wood base and the spring. I also glue or screw the trap first to a 3/4" piece of plywood so the trap doesnt warp. Attach a piece of wire to the plywood and tie it to a stick so the trap isn't carried off by a skunk, etc.

Daniel, You're exactly right. I use small brads on Victor mouse and rat traps. I cut the head off 1 brad to drill most of the way from bottom so wood doesn't split when putting brads from bottom. 3 on width, 1 on side sticking up about 1/2." I also use a small eye screw at the rear to hook a very lightweight chain to something. Love the tunnel concept. Wrap kite string around trigger and use P.B... Many times they don't trip it until they start pulling at the string.

When using peanut butter for bait wrap a few strands of thread around/through it to keep it
from being stolen so easily. When trapping rats it's the dumb ones that get caught first.
The smart ones get away and breed, therefore raising the average IQ level of the pack,
and making them all harder to catch.

I do likewise but I also spread the peanut butter under the trigger pan and not on top of it. What this does is get the rodent (both mice and rats) to nudge the nose under and try to lift to eat the bait and usually position them far enough into the trap that when it snaps it doesn't hit them behind the neck but beyond it and hits slightly behind the fronts legs torso area. It snaps the spine over the neck, a little more gruesome and most likely there may be more struggling but when it comes to rodents I don't care and simply want them dead... after setting them up this way each time my trap is triggered I'm unloading a corpse.

You can adjust the sensitivity of this style of trap by bending the upright tip the trip wire rests on.. if you get it adjusted/balanced correctly it will trip with the slightest touch. Also put a piece of meat wedged in first so after they find the peanutbutter they will pull on the meat and trip the trap if the peanutbutter wasn't enough. They tend to just lick at the peanutbutter until it's gone.

My favorite traps are the tube traps, and I've tried and made a dozen traps to compare. Tube traps use rodent natural tendency to travel baseboards and tunnels. They also conceal bait and the spring trap from household pets larger than the tunnel (like cats and dogs of course, but not hamsters). They're plainly visible when sprung so you know when to empty them, and the dead rodent is concealed inside, not out where guests can see them. All you do is open the jaws from the outside and shake the dead mouse out of the tube into the trash and set the spring again. You never have to touch a rat. They usually don't even have time to strip bait in there. I never had to refill the bait tray even once. The nature of rodents is to follow walls so they're placed in narrow areas behind furniture or the wall heater, against baseboards, inside or next to - or even inside - chicken coop containers. Just review the traps every once in awhile and you'll know when to clean them for reuse. All my rodents disappeared in a month, and I leave food on the counter all night long to test it. Even food bits in a tray on the floor are untouched. That's how I check for stragglers. Of course, no trap is supremely successful unless there's also a relentless search for rodent entrances and they're closed off.
They're great in the kitchen (I eventually found rodents coming in around pipes under the sink) and these traps can even be kicked with bare feet by accident and not trigger them or hurt myself if they do a false snap. Everything is contained inside the tube.
The other great invention is Ramik bait in packets. They desiccate rodents so even having eaten and dead, the mouse doesn't stink behind walls as it decomposes to dust. At first, I used to open the packets to sprinkle the green beads around, but they're so tasty rats will eat through the closed packet to get to them, fill up their cheeks and carry it back to their cache supply for storage. Now if I hear rodents in the night, I toss a closed packet behind whatever furniture is in the way the next day and listen to the cellophane crinkling in the night. No more rodents after that. Eventually their food storing habits take out the entire community sharing the same food cache, including nursing pups. When the packet is finished, I throw the empty cellophane away and wait to see if more are coming. There usually aren't any. Just sayin' :)

@@USMC19777 I should qualify the description by saying it's not a DIY project but an Amz purchase which could probably be deconstructed to a DIY. But it's the best trap I've used in a cabin that used to be overrun with mice. This title should take you there:
eXuby Pet-Safe & Child-Safe Rat Traps w/ Tunnel Design (3-Pack) - Dual Entry for Better Capture Rate - No Harmful Poison - Prevents Accidental Triggering - Avoid Finger Snapping - Setup in Seconds

      KatSense makes one too, titled:
Kat Sense Covered Rat & Chipmunk Traps, Prevents Accidental Triggering with Tunneled Design, Quick Humane Kill, Indoor 'N Outdoor Mouse Snap Traps
That AMZ post has a product video showing how it can be set (by hand or with your foot) and the obvious 'set or snapped' look to the lever, so nobody has to keep picking it up to check if there's anything in it. You can tell from across the room. I put them along baseboards or in spaces behind the fridge and that seems to work since rodents like to travel spaces where at least one side is protected.

Only the dumb AND DESPERATE for foods/hunger one will EAT THE FOODS ON A PIECE OF PAPER OR ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS OR ANY VISIBLE traps... but once the smart ones HAVE EYES CAN SEE THEIR SIBLINGS die from any visible traps, THEY WILL AVOID TO TAKE FOODS FROM ANY VISIBLE TRAPS or TAKE FOOD ON A PIECE OF PAPER OR ANY F.O. (FOREIGN OBJECT)... best if u have CAMERA to capture how smart they are to avoid take foods from any F.O. INCLUDES food on paper or walk the bucket trap plank/ramp -- ALL OF THESE ARE F.O, and the smart ones WILL BECOME VERY CAUTIONS (b/c they know it matters TO LIFE OR DEATH TO THEM to take food from where or avoid eat baking soda or plaster or any poisonous foods after see their siblings die from eat such foods, they REMEMBER THE SMELL of such poisonous food)... always remember YOU GETTA 1ST KILL A FEW rodent, best is verify by camera at least some rodents SEE THEIR SIBLINGS DIE FROM ANY VISIBLE TRAPS then they will become SO CAUTIONS NOT TO EAT FOOD FROM ANY F.O., EVEN PUT FOODS ON A PIECE OF PAPER OR WOOD OR PLASTIC RAMP, they WILL AVOID it - remember this experiment setting: a) must let the surviving ones SEE at least 1 dumb rodent was KILLED by your any VISIBLE conventional traps or die from eat the wrong poisonous foods; b) then verify if the smart surviving ones WILL CONTINUE take food from such traps or eat any poisonous food mixture... then you will confirm with my R&D works. I spent tons of time doing tons of R&D work only wanting to fix my rodent infestation problem. After I tried nearly all 99% of the traps/method in the world that ALL FAILED, then I have to review my engineering background to invent one of the world's greatest traps, with 320+ successful track record videos proof to u how wonderful it is, as people said: "don't believe anyone else, only believe in Alexander the Great Asian that's rich, smart, honest, funny and humbly love human and want to solve his own rodents problems 1st then taking advise from neighbors who said u design one of the world's truly greatest trap was ever invented, why NOT mass-produce it then sell it to help millions of people who also face rodents problem end their problems?!". Now I'm working on it. I hope u use video to confirm the SMART ONES DO NOT EAT FOODS ON ANY F.O. INCLUDING A PIECE OF PAPER after they see their siblings die from any visible traps. THEY HAVE EYES TO AVOID ANY VISIBLE TRAPS, THAT PROVES all 1)conventional snap traps FAIL- they see the springs/trigger mechanism, SO DO NOT SUBS OTHER CROOKS WHO MAKES YT AD REVENUE $ BY LIE TO U OR GIVE U FALSE HOPE to promote their bucket trap or fancy bs ideas, that WASTE YOU TIME, $ AND ENERGY; that's why it's so hard to find superman or rich, smart, honest, funny man or engineers edu u put the best interest of u as a consumer, ask u do NOT trust other crooks include the famous YT rat gurus, u know whom! PLS VERIFY BY VIDEO TO SEE IF SMART ONES DO NOT EAT foods on any F.O.; 2) high voltage electric zapper trap also fail-they see the metal on the ground to avoid; 3)bucket trap also fail-they will NOT climb the ramp or avoid step on the F.O. rotating plank; the crooks lie to u to promote Bucket trap is world's greatest ever invented trap only earn the YT ADVERTISE REVENUE earn Million subscribers - trick millions waste $M & Millions of hours wasted try those bs traps, in short, crooks make $ becoming RICH BY LIES/SCAM/TRICK/HEAVILY PROMOTE A FAILED PRODUCT THAT WASTE MILLIONS VIEWERS time, MONEY AND ENERGY, unless engineer me did tons of honest R&D works, trully design/invent/make my own products only to solve my own rats problem then also help neighbors, they all said "it's 1 of the world's best trap, why not MASS PRODUCE IT to help millions of Americans end their rodents problem too?! Alexander Law means Alexander the Great, also a funny, kind and love to help neighbors solve problems". 3)food poison incdlude baking soda/plaster mix w/ food all fail - after the dumb ones eat such food then die, before die they suffer many hrs tell the siblings, "I eat this p. food, smell my breath/mouth, remember to avoid such p. food in the future" so the whole community will AVOID eating such p. food making it fail again; I try all of these, all fail! 4) glue trap also fail-they only step on the edge of the glue trap to realize it's sticky to avoid it; again it only kills the dumb ones. 5) A24 GoodNature trap also fail-they HAVE EYES can see the TRIGGER ROD or NEEDLE MECHANICAL MECHANISM, And it's expensive! 6) all 99% of traps fail so I have to invent an invisible trap with 320+ successful track records. In short: pls verify to us by sharing a video that the smart ones WILL NOT EAT FOODS on any F.O. (Foreign Object) like paper, wood, plastic ramp/etc, they only want to take food found on the NATURAL GROUND/FLOOR THAT THEY HAVE USED TO WALK ON FOR WEEKS/MONTHS - they avoid food on a STRANGE pedestal/platform, it would take days to get them familiar with a new F.O. environment to take food from it. Food on the natural GROUND is the most secure way in their views/judgment, they're smart:)! Friends said "after u wasted so many hrs or money or energy on scammers tricking u, that's why smart girls/boys only trust/love/subscribe/be with the smart, rich, honest, funny best quality man. Learn from the mistake of letting other scammers trick u lose $, time, and beautiful youth. Millions of viewer subscribers get scammed by YT crooks who never was an engineer/scientists who put tons of their own effort, time, and brain power to do R&D work and invent their own traps to solve real problems!" And some people hate Asian so only view/buy/subscribe to make White people's channel products. If u r Asian, they dislike it or trust or buy or view from you, it's like they hate to buy Toyota cars but if u trust+buy Toyota, u save tons of $ and time in repair shop/ownership cost over the next 20 yrs LOL! One thing is certain, rodents are intelligent and have the capacity to learn if their mistakes don't get them killed. Different techniques and different baits have to be tried until you find something that provides better yield. Often baits have to be switched to suit the various breeds and genetic cousins because they all come to the 'table' with different experience; especially the bigger more skiddish rodents. I have seen larger ones wait for younger ones to die by triggering the trap and cannibalizing what remains. If you have dogs, you have rats. Dog feces is at best half digested and is a natural lure for scavengers of all types. You have to clean up daily and make a concerted effort to control your environment thereby making your home less of a target of opportunity.

Tried all sorts of traps but my best successes have been with the large Victory traps. Peanut butter is an excellent attractant but they'll lick it all off. I take some thread and tie a piece of raw bacon or chicken skin to the pressure plate. I wrap the thread around it several times to keep the quarry from getting too much access. The critter will have to work for it. This is how they run afoul of the pressure plate. Peanut butter smeared on top and around the plate. I'm going to incorporate the pvc pipe mod. It makes a lot of sense and I've subbed to get more tidbits

I use peanut butter with the large Victor traps, however, I’ve found by stuffing a larger amount on the bottom side of the pressure plate, they have to work harder to lick it off and its never works out well for the rats. Been using this method for years and has resulted in amazing results. Good luck!

Something that has always worked well for me is using gauze. If you take a small piece of gauze from your first aid kit, and roll your peanut butter inside of it, it makes the rats have to work at getting it out. So when you have your gauze infused with peanut butter, you just put it on that spiky part of the bait area of the trap. Make sure it's on there pretty securely, and again they have to really work at getting to the peanut butter. You can also put some peanut butter on the outside of the gauze just for the aroma. It works great

TomCat snap traps are my faves. I also tether my traps, and use an assortment of baits. The snap traps are MUCH easier to set than the old fashioned wooden ones. The TomCat traps (no affiliation!) are by far the easiest to empty, clean and re-use. I keep four baited traps in my basement all year round, cleaning and rebaiting about once a month if I haven't caught any rats. This winter's been bad because of the "atmospheric rivers" which have fallen on the west coast, followed by freezing temps which are very unusual here. The rats came indoors all over my city. I have had the best results from the TomCat, when talking with friends and neighbours. :-)

In my opinion I prefer to use the old fashioned traps, i know modern traps do prove well at times, but if the rats Intelligent than it's other brethren, modifying thr old victor Snap trap works better.

I have used every rat trap that can be bought at your local hardware and big box store. Snap traps of various types, glue boards, safe & humane traps, poisons, & plenty of Internet hack traps. The standard Victor snap trap is by far the best trap you can buy. Better than all the modern Victor traps, and better than all competitors. I have killed over 100 rats and mice at a single infested property. Other snap traps generally won't snap, or won't catch the rat if they do. Glue boards: the rat will just chew off the leg, leave it attached to the board, and be freed. Poisons can work, but then you've got dead, smelly, maggot infested rats tucked away in inaccessible nooks. The standard Victor is by far the most consistent rat killing trap. Note that the Victor snap trap isn't consistent from retailer to retailer. The Victors at your local big box store are not the same as the ones at many hardware stores; the big box store trap is better. For bait I always use peanut butter. I've tried other things with poor results, but everybody likes peanut butter.

The thing that has worked best for me is to put the trap in a cardboard amazon box that’s just big enough to clear the bar. I cut a rat size flap that leads to the bait. This is supposed to cut down on its room to flee once the trap activates. I like the pipe idea from this video as it seems to work similarly. I live in the woods so I get to test these traps every year.

Have any of you ever used the bucket and beer can method? I don't have rats, but do have plenty of mice and chipmunks that get under my summer camp when it gets cold.
I use a plastic bucket, drill a couple holes on opposite sides near the rim, insert a rod thru a beer can or other round container (I use empty planters peanut jars), then insert the rod and container thru the rim of the bucket. The container should spin on the rod, directly over the open bucket.
Smear peanut butter on the container and put a few inches of water in the bucket. Place a ramp to the top edge of the bucket.
The rodents will go up the ramp and leap to the container (beer can, jar, etc.) and fall into the water and drown.
I usually find 6 dead rodents in each bucket come springtime.
My alternative is to fill the containers with peanuts in the shell and put holes all around the plastic container for the aroma to get out. It works quite well.

One way to get rid of the metal smell is dip all of the traps in a salt solution so they get a reddish tint of rust on them and then boil all of the traps in walnut hulls, after they dry which will be quick after removing them from the walnut hulls, place the traps in unscented wax to keep them operating super quick and they won't rust any further. Be careful, because they'll be super quick. You could do that to the Victor rat traps to, so they aren't as noticeable, they'll look like the rest of the drab surroundings.

Very good suggestions. I agree with the drywall screws. But the wood bases can split from the screws, predrilled holes will help prevent this. I have used a piece of paint stir stick under the ends of the spring tension arms to increase the speed of the action. Always teather the traps because a scavenger will carry off the easy meal and take your trap with it. Have a nice day.

Great video . a buddy up north screws his Victor trap down to a piece of 2x4 . no way to run away from the trap . I think I'm going to try your screw trick . but going to screw the trap down to a piece of wood . I use a screwdriver to set the lever . I like my fingers . and when I set it up I used to set it up on a piece of cardboard and slide it into place . but sometimes it goes off making this guy jump lol . not funny . if it's affixed to a piece of wood that may simplify the matter. keep up the good work Gentleman . ps I bought one of the traps with the plastic flipper . much easier for this guy to set up . I have a hard time getting the bar to hook onto the latch .

I pre-drill small holes around the kill bar, then drive 1" brads into the holes instead of using screws. With a 7" long rat, I can usually impale them under the bar with 2-3 nails, some of which go into their jaw, skull, throat, or an arm. They will not get out of that. Just be very careful when setting your trap!
When using peanut butter, cut a small 45 degree piece off one of the bottom corners of a cheap baggie, then load your peanut butter into the baggie. You can squeeze it out as needed, like putting icing on a cake. It it's too firm in the winter, put it in the microwave for a few seconds.
Put your traps against walls, certainly within 1/4" or so from the business end of the trap to the wall. Rats and mice tend to travel along walls and tend not to get into the open near as much.

I used trap number 2 with Peter Pan peanut butter. I caught 14 rats, big and small, in 2 nights and eliminated our rat problem.
Rats also get really thirsty. If you put a water source near the trap it attracts them faster. You can even put out a jar lid of potato flakes for those rats that miss the traps. When they eat the potatoes, they get thirsty and the result is the potato flakes swell up in their gut and gum up the works, resulting in death.

    • @Sionnach1601

There's no eliminating a rat problem unless you shut off every access hole into the house.
There's no eliminating a rat problem outdoors for obvious reasons.
I'm sure Peter Pan is very happy with your promotion but any peanut butter works.
Thanks for the suggestion on the potato flakes. If it works so well, why not just use that only?
