  • The old LA 318 in our '84 Ramcharger 4X4 was struggling to pull the tall overdrive in winds & tall hills, so we swap in a more modern 5.9 Magnum from a 1998 Ram 1500.

I had a 90 Ramcharger that I used to write some articles in Off Road and Fourwheeler magazines. We were able to get Lock-Right prototype a locker for that factory 9.25 axle. That would be a nice addition

The magnum swap is fantastic. I did mine in 2008. HER0814 Hughes cam, M1(swapping to a RPM EFI soon), NV4500 and 4.56 gears in 35s. Edelbrock 650 carb and Old thorley Tri-Ys it made 279/339 to the wheels when I dyno tuned it. I worked for a speed shop then, the bet was +\- 250. 😏
Rewiring the whole truck as of now. My least favorite thing.

I'm in Egypt and building my 80' Ramcharger. I've rebuilt the motor, even removed those two big glass windows on the removable top and closed it in like a panel truck and will completely smooth out the top so it resembles the Dodge Town Wagon /Panel Truck. That's pretty much my vision for it and it's probably a couple months away from being done man. That's a pretty cool engine and such a cool ride. Dodge RamChargers need a ton of love and unfortunately in Egypt, people don't really like old cars here. But these bad Bois have a whole lot of character and so much potential in what you can do!. STILL regretting selling my 1993 RM 4WD LE. @ 235K it still ran & looked new. Thing looked like an official Govt/L.E/Sheriffs truck being all White with dark tint. The thing spooked many a person upon rolling up on 'em, one of my friends who didnt know what I'd driven, upon entering his workplace parking area, freaked out, tossed his burning chong-spec doobie n' >>RAN>> off!...-Just HILARIOUS, as the long haired, dreadlocked hippie exits the vehicle....;)
Dealership Mechanic during trade in asked me if the drive-train, tranny & 318 was newly/recently installed? The look of sheer astonishment on his face when I'd told him the truth of original mileage was hilarious. He walked away shaking his head n' quite puzzled as the motor metrics & tests metered as near new according to standard specs. I did take good care of it though. WA state truck, used by a utility company executive before I'd purchased it. Hell, It appeared near new in 2001....
Only thing I'd dropped cash on where the usual's: wheels/tires/stereo/few chrome parts for motor/roof rack/spare 5G gas cans & mounts. Only mechanical issues were the usual: "Deeerunk Driver" steering box, poor "Broken/Leaning Bird Wing" entry door bushings & the replacement of in-tank fuel pump @ one time. Other than that, rock SOLID as to reliability....
LOVED the PLUSH driver/passenger seats?! My God, the MOST comfy seats Ive EVER planted myself in w/o a doubt! Easily sleepable when fully reclined...
And that amazing OverDrive lock out?! That feature had gotten me outtve well more than a few speeding tickets, when pushed & dropping gear it would instantly drop my speed by 5-7 MPH?!..Enough to throw ya forward in the driver/front passenger seat a tad if not expecting it...
Not too mention: Having the >> Fastest>> PWR windows known to man! (Almost dangerous really, aside from loss of control/looming deep water landings...Ha!..My driver side pwr window, w/o a one push-full down feature, fully dropped in about 1 in a 1/2 seconds?!..Pass side only slightly slower....
Bought that '93 RC for 8$K in 1997ish w/98K on ODO sold for $8.5K with 235K on ODO on Sept 12th, 2001, bought '97 Ford Expedition 4wd E.B, which served much better for my business than the RC. Oddly, that truck served incredibly well w/o too much ha$$le. Still posses it. Bought a 2007 Dodge 4wd 1/2 ton PU in 2013 for 14$K that was a NIGHTMARE, motor died, within a year I had to put a brand new 12$K Hemi into it & other assorted repair co$ts, whatta P.OS!...
-Guess I expected more from Dodge considering I'd owned a 1989 Ramcharger that was great, then bought the '93 that was also wonderful. Gave the 1989 RC 4wd to my father upon buying the '93 RC...
Now own 2017 Ford Expy 4wd XLT & ive dealt with more issues/knit-picky broken BS at around 55K miles than one person should need too. Ive done most of said repairs myself though thankfully. Newer vehicles are absolute >>PURE CRAP

Forgot to mention in my former comment/'Book" below: the 1989 4WD RamCharger I'd had, possessed a wild, but usable, Easter-Egg feature. Im not entirely sure it was a factory install? But it certainly didnt look like an after purchase, addition or home-job. Upon the inside, more towards the passenger side of the motor hood, there was a small hand held 60-80 watt flashlight/work on a retractable coil arrangement, with an extendable power wire, that could be run/pulled out all the way to the very middle of the REAR tail/lift gate?!...
-Very cool, but STRANGE!...Handy if ya had a roadside issue @ night & no flashlight present.....;)

'With one simple bolt on'.... LOL. Not quite. Not even REMOTELY a 'simple bolt on'... Not appropriately titled in the least.. But anyways, after a completely replaced motor, with tons of upgrades, great job with an ENTIRE SWAP OUT. You food me, probably a few thousand others too. Glad it worked out for you though, she's certainly got more juice; from 'one simple bolt on'.

They live forever sure, hard to kill...but you're right, in stock form and even with some cam & induction upgrades they just don't really pack the punch.

These magnum motors come alive with some simple hop-ups, but the computer on your 95 will be your limiting factor.

Thanks!! With the 318 on a calm wind day & flat ground, we were knockin' on the doors of 20mpg...haven't put enough miles on the 5.9 yet to compare...but we will!

I’ve got a complete ‘05 1500 pickup with the 5.9L Magnum that I bought as a parts vehicle for my 05 w/Gen II 5.7L Hemi. I was told that the Mag engine was no good. There’s nothing obviously wrong with the 5.9. I’ve already switched most of the body parts out it. I’ve been swapping items so as to keep complete vehicles which helps with the Municipal Code Enforcement folks.
I had to put another engine in my other ‘05 as the 5.7 wore out at 272K miles. It’s my DD so I had my Trans Shop put in a 3 yr., 100K warranted Jasper Reman. I don’t for sure which Gen. it is but it’s obviously newer than mine because it’s got individual Coils on each cylinder which my original did not.
My question is; Do you think it’s wise to attempt a rebuild on that 5.9 and put that truck back on the road?
Great video. You made me a believer and now after watching 4 of your vids I’m a Subscriber!!

These 5.9's are excellent rebuild motors. There's still a TON of aftermarket support, especially in stroker rotating assemblies. If I ever have to pull this one back out, it will be stretched to at -least- 408 cubes. I say, do your research, piece together a package that will meet your objectives, get in touch with a machine shop you can trust & pull the trigger!

Last I knew a Ram Charger was an SUV not a truck, don't understand why everyone calls their SUV's trucks. I've owned four Ram Chargers and still own an 84 Ram Charger and they were and still are SUV's and I own four Dodge trucks currently and I don't call them SUVs. Next thing you know people will be driving Ford Blazers and Chevy Broncos seeing how you can rename things whatever you wish to call them.
