Just went through this process in PA for a 1985 250sx. State said I did not get a good enough pic of VIN. Had to take the bike to a licensed mechanic and have him write down the VIN as he saw it on his business letterhead and send that into the state. After all that I got my registration. Had one form to fill out and the bill of sale. PA requires the machine to be registerd to ride on state land trails.

There is a way to make it theoretically street legal in all 50 states using the Montana llc loophole (you'll have to physically be in Montana for steps 4 and 6).
    1. Give the seller a check for 20 on top of the price you bought for.
    2. Get cancelled check from bank as proof of purchase.
    3. Install street legal equipment
    4. Get law enforcement officer to inspect vin and sign form saying not stolen.
    5. Take prior paperwork and go to DMV and apply for bonded title.
Fyi Montana considered 3 wheelers to be motorcycles not atvs and that's what it will show on registration.
    6. Register it under a Montana llc (there websites online that can help you do this) and tell DMV clerk it's a dual sport.
    7. You get the montana plates.
    8. Since it's owned by a Montana llc and not by yourself you can keep Montana plates indefinitely in any state.
    9. Should be theoretically 50 state legal but your local law enforcement might disagree. You should have no problems with law enforcement in Montana, Idaho, arizona, Wyoming, North Dakota and west Virginia. I think it should also work in Canada but I haven't read the specifics of the treaty allowing tourists.

And here I thought doing this for an ATC in CA was hassle.
I just did an 82 250r last Friday with no paperwork. All I needed was a bill of sale from the guy I bought it from, along with a written statement of facts from him that he 'lost the paperwork from the last registered owner' and ' has no idea how to contact them after all this time'
Paid $300 total covering unpaid back fees from 2015 and title fee for me and I was out with it throwing roostertails up Blowsands in Ocotillo Wells with a 2025 sticker on the fender 3 hours later.
Honestly though, the amount of BS being said about how these cannot be registered without paperwork or that they were banned an illegal to ride is pretty much right up there with Chupacabra, Bigfoot, and Gas prices under $2 a gallon....

I'll have one of those $250 ATC 350X 3 wheelers, too, please 😅
It really irks me that NY state technically requires an ATV to be registered even to use on your own property. If you go and buy a new one, the dealer isnt even allowed to give it to you until its registered, except for in the rare instance youre exempt, such as when the ATV is exclusively used for agriculture. This state really likes to get up in our business 🤨
At least they dont make the registration expensive. Not like snowmobiles. 12.50 compared to 45 or 100 dollars for a sled depending on whether youre a snowmobile club memeber or not.
Thanks for sharing the process with your fans. Its nice to get some accurate information out there. I've also heard folks say it's not legal to register 3-wheelers in NY, but i knew that was a load of crap.
I always assumed years ago that this process would be difficult and/or expensive, so i never did it until this spring. It was a pleasant surprise to find out that it was easy and cost under $50.
Mine also came through as nontransferable. I was told that Albany will review the documents, and if everything checks out, they'll issue a transferrable registration later. So, technically I still dont have a proof of ownership quite yet.

So now is this the same as a title? Here in WA state you have to get it inspected by the state patrol before taking paperwork to the dmv to get a title, which takes 3 years to get. You can however get a registration and tabs to ride right away. You can also sell it within the three years before you receive the title in your name.

    • @ThisOldTrike

Man, trying to get a title for anything in Idaho is a complete mess. Dang near impossible unless you can find the last registered owner. For strictly off road vehicles you can get an annual off road tag without a title now. But anything requiring a plate, forget about it. Idaho didn’t require a title for off-road vehicles until 1988. Unfortunately almost all three wheelers don’t have titles. But I do believe if it’s never been titled, it’s much easier to get a title.
