Best place on earth ever ! Still go their now and remember my golden childhood holidays in the 70's. So many memories of a magical time when it was booming. Still the best beach on the east coast bu far...love it 😍😍😍😍
Wow how beautiful scarbrough was it's changed so much in the past forty year not as much now as there was bk then great memories thank you
Wow what a SPLENDID presentation of Scarborough old & new Thankyou Steve
Very welcome
I live in Scarborough..how wonderful to see these fabulous pictures, brilliantly done.I love how we can still see the ghost sign on that building on Aberdeen Walk, how good must that paint have been! Thanks Steve Messruther for compiling this.
Nice picture of the beautiful Pavilion Hotel (01:15) that was knocked down and replaced with a concrete monstrosity. As a child I was taken there many times by my parents for Sunday lunch, in the days when tablecloths and napkins were standard and uniformed waiters would serve vegetables from metal dishes using a spoon and fork. Scarborough used to be a relatively elegant town in the 60s and early 70s and then it all went horribly wrong.
My grandmother lived in Tindal Street off Victoria Road, my family used to visit Scarborough every year during the fifties and sixties for two weeks holiday. My parents retired to Scalby just on the outskirts. They are buried in Woodlands Cemetery.
Although lots has changed, I am still able to let my daughter enjoy a great deal of attractions that I enjoyed and are still there to this day.
Part of my heart will always lay in Scarborough.
I was borne at 146 Victoria rd opposite tindall rd in 1949. It was a sweet shop owned by my grandma mrs Yates.
A lot of things have gone, that is true. Most of the time those attractions were run by private businesses that either went bust or closed due to retirement. Even so there are still many things to do - the people who run the North Bay Railway for example have done a fantastic job with it and they open just about all year round. New things pop up all the time. Yet the thing that makes Scarborough amazing is the 2 beaches. It is great to see young kids doing what we all did at that age - running down to the waters edge and braving the waves for a swim or digging trenches to get the sea to flow arounds a sand castle. Then popping over the road for a bag of chips and an ice cream :) And on the North Side exploring the rocks when the sea is out.
I love these morphs, some things have not changed a bit and others have changed beyond all recognition. Really well put together, thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
Being from Bradford. as a kid we had our holidays in Scarborough was a Breath of fresh air.
you surprise me
Love this, great to see The Corner Café, The Futurist Theatre, Northstead Manor Gardens etc etc.
Make way for progress! Well if that is what they call progress , then I want no part of it! Excellent video production, thank you for sharing this with us
This is absolutely brilliant.
So well made.
And so very very interesting.......
Thank you....
Glad you enjoyed it!

Loved it😊👍
My happy place, always has been, always will be.
thank you,ive been around the world but love scarborough particularly when its quiet out of season, your photos have just blown me away, thank you i now have an even deeper insight to this great town upon the sea
Nice to Read all the comments from the old local names .Craig sadler
And the old lady still looks on ,please make it possible to see you again
An excellent video. Quite sad the history that's been wiped. Having spent some childhood living here it brought back memories of places I actually forgot existed
I remember spending many happy days in Gala Land, and dancing at the Olympia. Movies at the Odeon, Lonsborough, Capitol ,Aberdeen & the Futurist. All gone now.
One thing hasn't changed. You still get really good Fish and Chips in Scarborough.
The best :)
That’s true as I actually live in Scarborough
And I get fish and chips every few weeks
@@lexireynolds9386 Lucky you. I live on the west coast of Wales where they Fish and Chips are lousy.
John Dufton i Heard that place is nice
When we knew who was amongst us.
We love Scarborough greetings from Scotland 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
The music that I have added goes well with the images but recently a company has has raised a copyright claim. This sort of thing really is getting a bit stupid. All the tracks on here are cover versions and not the the recordings done by the artists. It seems now that even cover versions are being flagged up. One track - Half The World Away has been flagged up because it is in the `style` of Oasis ! the irony is Oasis stole the tune in the 1st place from a kids TV show. Anyway - I shall be replacing all the tracks soon with my own music.
@John Cliff Many thanks for the kind words John :) There are a lot of videos lined up to finish and post showing the history of the town. I am working on one at the moment that shows Scalby Mills past and present. I was given a load of 8mm films that I have copied and using bits in the new productions. The films were taken over a 10 year period of holidays in Scarborough from 1960-1970. Some really good stuff :) It will be a while yet before it is complete but look out for it :)
@John Cliff You might like this as well - did it during the summer. ruclips.net/video/R3b0ZUyxSO4/видео.html
What a great video Steve I coundn't agree more about the copyright nonsense haven't these people heard of a bit of give and take and sharing for goodness sake life's too short.I have one or two nice Edwardian postcards of Scarborough that came from my Great Aunt's house In Hull that nearly ended up in a coke boiler. Thanks for sharing.
Nice to see well done Craig. Sadler
An amazing video thank you so much for creating it. Great music by the way.
This is ace . .
Great watch 😉
I will never forget you Anne
Very nicely done.
A few facts for the guy from Canada who is complaining about trademarks.
America has 3 Scarborough’s, North Carolina, New York and Maine
Australia has 3 Scarborough`s Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales
South Africa has 1 Scarborough - Western Cape
Trinidad and Tobago has 1 Scarborough - Tobago
St Kitts and Nevis has 1 Scarborough - Saint James Windward
Jamaica has 1 Scarborough - Saint Ann
Barbados has 1 Scarborough - Christ Church
Oh!..... and Canada also has 1 Scarborough - Ontario
But the 1st ever Scarborough is here in North Yorkshire. Although no evidence of an actual date exists it is believed to have been formed around 966AD. Scarborough Ontario was founded in 1850. Scarborough, North Yorkshire was already 884 years older that Scarborough, Ontario. In fact....Scarborough, North Yorkshire actually existed 536 years before CANADA was discovered (1534). Perhaps you should change your `registered trademark ) to read `Scarborough Looking back is a trademark of Scarborough Ontario but only actually goes back as far as 1850 because we didn`t exist before then but if you really want to look back you need to go to Scarborough, North Yorkshire because that is where the story starts.”
There is only one Scarborough for me and that is in North Yorkshire.
England. The real one.
Thousands of years old.
👍👍👍👍👍👌👌👌👌💝💖💓💜💖💞💜💕💕💙💛💛💛💛💛💙💙💙💙💗
Thanks Steve and the facebook group, lovely video, amazing pictures, been visiting Scarborough since the mid fifties on and off, loved the place then and still do,the fish n' chips are very good in Scarborough, but not quite as good as Grimsby/Cleethorpes,but then again I'm biased,I live in this area 😊😊 We visited The Ivy House Nov last year hoping for good fish n' chips but was a bit disappointed,I rembered it from many years ago when it was much more higher class.
Best fish and chips are away from the sea front - there are 3 in town that are really good.
Try the Fish Pan or the Golden Grid you will be pleasantly surprised
@@Turnbull50 Thanks Tom,must remember that for next visit 😁
Try the fish & chips at Silks at The Croft, Newby. They are now the best in Scarborough.
What I did notice with these old photos was that there were almost no "overweight people", but then they did not have the luxury of a variety of food like we have today; unlike today where we are bombarded with fast food outlets.
Great video and wonderful memories for me. Do you remember the fishing tackle and bait shop,it was down a narrow cobbled road that ran across the bottom end of the market hall? If you do remember the shops name I'd love to know,we used to get pots of mussels for bait on our way down to the pier when we were growing up in Scarborough. I've been trying to remember the shops name for a week. A.T.V.B. A new subscriber 👍👍
It was called Pritchards :)
The lack of people is noticeable, pedestrianise then no one wants to walk there, rip down buildings of character for a concrete block which itself becomes unwanted. The so called bad old days i think were the good old days!
WE PASS AS SHADOWS AND THEN ------- ARE GONE
The Past Scenes were far more People friendly, How the Car has dominated our towns and cities.
Looking at a host of dead souls in these photographs. The present pictures will relate the same impressions to future viewers. Out, out brief candle.
The picture of the cousins garage that morphed into Antony Gordon is wrong , Antony Gordons was my dad's and grandads shop and before that it was Grays photography,it was never anything to do with cars ,just though I'd clear that up 👍
I took another look at this and I now think that the garage was bit further up - corner of Hanover Road and Westborough. The problem with the data is that the garage was featured in a book and was named as 81 Westborough. As you know 81 is where your dads shop was. The picture is said to be 1929 which also now rules out Number 81. The older photos show Grays ect before 1929. So thanks for pointing out the mistake :) Often we see post addresses in the older books that don`t match up with current buildings. Looks like the author of the book got it wrong in the 1st place.
@@stevemessruther172 that sounds about right to me ,my dad's shop is,or was 82 westborough, thanks for the info 👍
Brilliant to see, wonderful collation. Shame about the mind-numbing muzak though...
You can always turn the music off - plus you should be aware that RUclips constantly watch and enforce any video that has copyright material. Whenever possible I will use my own tunes. Some of the music in this video has been replaced or muted by RUclips.
Thanks for the reply🙂@@stevemessruther172
.
SCARBOROUGH LOOKING BACK is a Register Trademark in Scarborough, Canada and is not associated with this video which apparently shows, Scarborough, England.
No apparently about it - this is "The" Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England and the same Scarborough that all the other Scarborough`s were named after. It`s a collection of images of our town put together as a historical document.
What a sad numpty you are.
No one cares. Thanks.
