    It’s also worth noting that when you buy the solid woods, they tend to “open up” more as you play it more over the years. So I 100% recommend at least starting out with an acoustic guitar that has a solid top.

    The thing with the more expensive guitar when you go quieter, it sounds fuller when you just tickle it like that, it gets amplified a bit more. While on the cheaper on it's more faint. - It's fine in general, but if you want a fuller sound in a bigger range, you'll need something more solid.

    It can end up being a vicious circle; it is difficult to fully appreciate a good guitar until you can play, but a poor guitar which is a struggle to play will hold you back and prevent you from realizing your potential. I finally bought myself a decent guitar for my 40th which was a Lowden 032c. That changed my playing for the better, leaps and bounds. Ten years later I got Tom Waghorn to build me a 000, a fantastic guitar which is now ten years old and feels like a friend.

    Hidden gem in the acoustic world are the Epiphone Masterbilt Series. I have a DR500MCE, all solid woods (mind you, no fancy woods). Made in Indonesia, plays and sounds stunning! Picked it up for less than $600 USD 6 years ago. Then again, I just sold an Ibanez V70 that also played beautifully, and picked it up for a little bit of nothing.

    just bought all Mahogany Bristol for $250 US. shipped 1200 miles and I tuned 2 strings and played it. good projection, warm, playable, sustains, beautiful. the down side, 20-30 hours play time and the strings are going south. Mahogany is great tonewood, but old strings lose projection is more pronounced. so I will change strings more often, but I will tolerate since I love the warm tone. compromise is okay. Ü ♫

    Learning how to get the most out of a laminate-top guitar should buy you plenty of time to save up for something more fancy, that you'll be able to do justice by then. I went with an F310 (nice neck!), because though you might find better than a Yamaha, you can't go wrong with a Yamaha.

    When my son was 9 I spent $1200 on a really nice, very playable used Charvel guitar and 50w Soldano amp with 2x12 cab. I know that's not acoustic but the principle is the same. Because the gear was not holding him back due to its shittyness, he got really good, was able to then play and meet lots of people and 10 years later got a deal with a major label with a $250K advance. Good guitars and equipment help a player develop, and if they decide not to play its easy to get rid off. Shitty guitars hold the new player back and are impossible to get rid of if you need to. Get the best you can afford. Do not buy into the "buy crap until you prove you're serious" bullshit. Invest in creativity. Period.

      I agree. Law of diminishing returns and resell prices on lower end guitars and gear is bad. Higher end well taken care of stuff holds value longer and not as bad diminished value. I say save up for a few months at get to that 400$ price area where taylor and Martin make great guitars. Sire is a great brand for 300$. And even buying used as your first guitar is great. A 400$ guitar new would be around 250 used. Thats a great deal. And it usually includes a case. Buy quality once and be happy. I'm with ya on that

    • @JoeBaermann
      @JoeBaermann 5 лет назад +5

      While I agree that one shouldn't buy crap diminishing returns and resell prices have nothing in common with actual playing an instrument.

    • @mr.anonymous5501
      @mr.anonymous5501 5 лет назад +2

      Nonsense. You don't need to spend anywhere near that money to get a playable guitar, that will stay in tune, and last. It seems you're just trying to take some credit for his talent and hard work, by putting some of it down to the equipment you bought. Encouragement and discipline (which I'm sure you gave) would have done infinitely more to get him to the point he's at. If your Son wasn't going to learn what he learned on a £250 and £100 amp, he wasn't going to learn it at all. It's not something like skydiving, where your life as at risk, and buying on a budget is dangerous. Price doesn't equate to quality, either, and it's quality you're looking for, not just a flash badge on the headstock. I think having the best equipment can actually damage, or kill creativity, like the more pedals you add to the effect board, the less techniques you have to learn with your hands.

    My first guitar was my father’s Fender DG-3. Had to look up how much it cost as I had no idea, and it was probably 25 years ago. Suprising to be honest as it would’ve been his monthly salary at the time or similar. No wonder it sounded better than basically everything else my friends had. The CD220SCE ash burl I bought afterwards didn’t have the same magic (what strings should I put on it? experimenting is getting expensive). My favorite acoustic I own is the Yamaha LS-TA. As has been noted before, what the player hears and feels is different than what the audience hears ... The Fender does quite well into a mic. AND, laminates do well for beach guitars because laminates are pretty darn stable in iffy conditions. Not pulling anything away from the higher priced units. But I do think a lot of folks should have a "camp" guitar. Don't want to take my Gretsch down to the river with a keg ... That's why we need to see Andertons more than once :)

      I just checked him out from this comment as I'd never heard of him, despite his following being a whole 5% the size of Andertons. What an arrogant prick that man is. His show is boring, two men I've never heard of who aren't funny and have no chemistry and some annoying woman laughing in the background at things that aren't funny. I can't imagine why nobody has done that before?! Also having a 'news' section at the beginning...yeh there's a reason most people don't bother with that...

    Pete didn't like the most expensive guitar because solid mahogany back and sides makes for a very dark sounding guitar. The middle guitar is spruce top, plywood back and sides. What they really needed was any rosewood guitar in the mix, but that's become much more expensive.

    I've always been a fan of Epiphone acoustics, good prices and sound really nice!

    I just bought my first guitar today from Andertons.....before I watched this video. I bought the Fender 115 ..just because I know Fender make good guitars. To be honest this video is not really for beginners. Buying my first guitar, I am not going to be playing it like these guys for a start. So worrying about sound & frets and type of wood and any other technical stuff shouldn't be brought to the attention of the beginner, tbh beginners won't know the difference from a £100 or £1000 guitar when they play....we will just be plinking along as a beginner . When I get to playing like these guys, hopefully I will be on £1000 guitar.

    I wanted to ask something. Need a honest advice. From where to start playing guitar? Acoustic or Electric as a newbie to music? Self learning or really needs a tutor?
    I wanna learn playing guitar.

      I'd say it depends on the type of music you want to play. Also which one do you prefer? Wanting to do something is half the battle. Electric guitars are usually easier to play because it's easier to hold down the strings.

    I think Pete was trying to remember the Yamaha FS800 with aged solid spruce top at $200.

    My first acoustic guitar was a $300 Alvarez. It sounded great, played well and served me for the next 15 years. If I’d chosen a $100 guitar (not sure if those existed 25 years ago), I probably would have had to replace it after 2-3 years, ultimately spending more money than on my one Alvarez.

    If you're a beginner and you can afford it, spend about £300 - £400 on your first guitar. If you do, you'll play it happily for decades...and if you decide the guitar isn't for you, you won't have any difficulty selling it on. If you spend under £100, you'll hate it in 6 months and want an upgrade...and if you decide it's not for you, no-one wants a second hand £80 guitar.

    Tone comes from the fingers.......mostly. Look for the best you can afford then go up a stage. The extra expense will make you pick it up and the extra money will become evident.

    Go for Cort or Takamine around £300 I would say...

    As much as you can afford, is the answer. The more it costs, the easier it plays (usually)..... and when it's time to move it on, you'll get a better price for it. If I was a young teenager starting out today, I'd ask dad to buy me a second hand Taylor GS Mini Mahogany.
