"So, we need to make sure Captain Rogers doesn't grow suspicious. When he wakes up, he'll think it's 1945. Now, download a broadcast of a baseball game from 1941."
So the thing about the fake hospital scene, is that it's intentionally TOO fake. With all the resources SHEILD has, they could have made thing however they wanted. So they wanted certain things to feel 'off'. That way when they broke the news to Steve, he wouldn't be even more confused. There are a few dissections of the scene around the internet that you can find. The baseball game being a well remembered game, and from 3 years prior is the most obvious clue. Rambling below The second clue is the clothes. Who puts a hospital patient in boots? and lets them sleep on the bed? much less in pants and a t-shit. If Steve was out cold and in a hospital he would be in whatever pajamas they provide. They would quite literally have to cut him out of those clothes if there was any sort of medical emergency. Another clue is the noise of the New York streets. It plays for a while, but eerily stops whenever him and the nurse start talking. There are no noises coming from the other hospital rooms which are supposed to be around him. It is unnatural, especially for someone who is used to living in dense city areas. You can see Steve listening in and noticing this. Steve has super hearing to some capability too, don't forget. He could probably hear the soilders waiting around outside. curledEspecially Long story short is that they KNEW Steve would be focusing on this woman as she was going to be the one to come in and break the news to him. So they made everything about her look intentionally off. immediately
@@bikinibro Then why did she say she didn't know what he was talking about, adding to the confusion? Wouldn't it be better if she just explained it to him then and there instead of pressing a panic button and calling a bunch of large men in imposing black clothes that are armed?

well. It would be like a Desert storm veteran. Walking one day. Listening to the radio about some airplane and towers. That would immediatly.Put him into defence mode.
As a baseball fan, I appreciate this attention to detail. Steve Rogers is from Brooklyn. The reason he remembers being at that game is because right after he wakes up, Pete Reiser (a Brooklyn Dodger) hits an inside-the-park grand slam at Ebbets Field. This is a very rare (and exciting) play and no baseball fan would ever forget being there when it happened. That game occurred on May 25th, 1941 and that ITP GS the last one to occur before we officially entered the war. Of course he would recognize that immediately.
With how many games are played during a season. And during the beginning of it's true hayday. He wouldn't have forgotten that someone had an in the park grand slam in person.
@@Ramkumar-zj4ej I hope whatever Shield agent choose to have that game playing was fired. Altough now I guess we could chalk up that mistake to Hydra interference, haha.
It's fascinating to observe Steve Rogers ability to pick up on the smallest things in regards to something being wrong. Just like the elevator scene, he knows instantly that something if wrong.
@@ImOmerAhmed no it's the scene where tony comes back from captivity and says that he had two things to do. To eat Cheeseburgers and second to call a press conference. It's from iron man 1.
I find this scene so interesting. He runs outside and he must be so confuse about what he is seeing. Like "woah those buildings have tvs on them" and then the whole date thing is just heartbreaking
Imagine how that must be for both him and Peggy. For Peggy, it was a literal lifetime. She grew old, had children and possibly grandchildren before Cap woke up. Meanwhile, in Cap's mind, he took a nap and was transported into the future 70 years.
And by going back in time, Steve prevented said children and grandchildren. Which is one of the reasons, I think it's shitty writing. Steve wasn't that selfish. He would have finished the mission and come home.
@@ethanv7330 unless those children were always his and therefore he completed the loop of time travel, just he knew not to give his future self any life spoilers.
Another side story is Cap just went back in time to have his date with Peggy but actually didnt spend the rest of his life with her. He decided to spend it with black widow because they were good friends and he never got to say goodbye in the present before she sacrificed herself. It seems it might be possible because he was highly reluctant to speak of it when asked.
Well, by that point Cap would have already started to piece together that he'd been gone for a *very* long time, he just didn't know exactly *how* long until Fury told him. Cap's not stupid.
Easily the best part of the movie. His being out of time and loving Peggy is so beautifully resolved with the very last scene of the whole Avengers storyline with Endgame where they finally get to be together, actually quite profound. The quality difference between this and Winter Soldier is crazy.
What MCU needs to do is show Peggy sitting at a table at the dance waiting for Steve to appear. She would have been so torn up about him being killed, she'd still go to keep her end of the bargain for the date. Then have young Steve walk in and say, " I kept my promise." That would be a killer start for the next Cap and Peggy movie.
Shield: - “Let’s break it to him slowly” - “How should we do that?” - “Well I was thinking- lets keep him in fake room just outside Times Square. That way when he leaves the first thing he’ll see when walking outside are gigantic LCD displays everywhere he looks while simultaneously being surrounded by traffic and commuters.”
I think part of the reason why they did that is so that he'd believe them. In the middle of nowhere, he could think that it was staged, but in a big city like that, there's no way they could fake it at that scale.
I mean... fuck her career and husband and kids or whatever I guess. Peggy Carter was reduced to a love interest and had not one single line. Definitely passed the sexy lamp test.
This scene is perfectly linked with Endgame’s ending scene. We could feel how much he wanted the normal life desperately like everyone. We all know Steve Rogers really deserves to take one last chance for the date after he saved the Universe with Avengers.
And it was also meant to be. The Avengers would've failed many times without Steve Rogers. They needed him in the modern day, and when all the work was finally done, he got his second chance. He basically got to retire after Thanos was defeated.

He saved the world, but paid the highest personal price for it. He lost his friends, his world, and the love of his life. "I had a date" is a simple but crushing expression of that.
Imagine waking up almost 70 years later and realising almost everyone you know is dead. Damn. 😳 Edit: I’m aware that Steve had no family or friends left in 1945, except for friends like Howard Stark, Colonel Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones’s character), the Howling Commandos and Peggy Carter. Even though Peggy wasn’t dead yet but he initially didn’t know that when he woke up, he immediately assumed she was also long gone. Plus he didn’t know Bucky had survived his fall either. @@FantasyDepression Nick said himself that they wanted to break it to Cap slowly. Having someone like Cap have a freak out within New York City would be extremely dangerous.
@@FantasyDepression I'm not saying that the theory is wrong, maybe Nick did want to seed in hints. However even S.H.I.E.L.D wouldn't know what game he has been too. Experiencing the game probably kept better in his mind then hearing it over the radio, so when the play by play game winning hit was heard, it triggered that memory of actually seeing it. kind of like a picture of an old trip. So the theory still holds, however it was a very risky for Nick to make and it would have gone south if Steve didn't have the will power to stay calm.
@@FantasyDepression It's possible Fury didn't even know anything about that. He had so many plates spinning at this point in the series it's not inconceivable that he doesn't have the time to focus on Steve all the time. I figure that one of the SHIELD people at the little headquarters there made the mistake of picking a game Steve knew too well, and didn't think anything of it. It's not a decision Fury would've been privy to either, since he had so many other bigger things to worry about and probably trusted those people not to screw it up. But alas, not everyone is Fury, so mistakes were made.
Cap didn't wake up right away, so they probably had a lot of games play and eventually they got lazy with the dates. My question is, why have a radio at all?

I had the same thought. I get that it's cool to have him come out onto Times Square, but it makes no sense. Not only for trying to "break it to him slowly," but also, how expensive and impractical is it to have all that equipment and personnel in the busiest, most expensive intersection in America?
Must be disorienting as Hell, Steve knew Times Square by heart, he's been there a hundred times, and here he is in what can't be anything but Times Square but not the Times Square he knew
Just like Nick Fury said. They tried to break it to Cap slowly. Everything in the room is a set up, even her outfit. Women this age doesnt wear like that and do their hairs like that.

He'd be like "is this the Rapture I read about in the Bible?" ...then he see idiots on the street protesting against lock-down and virus outbreak, and pray to the Lord "Please take my back to 70 years ago...I didn't gave my life serving and protecting my country just so people can become arrogant morons thinking they are center of the universe".

@@captainjefferies9047 I want to believe that's why, but I don't think that's why XD Definitely a detail I kinda wish was brought to light. Like when Fury recruits Steve. One of the things that helped me realize everything... was the fact that a Black man was in a powerful position:)" I dunno, that would've been cool, but, like I said, I don't think that's why XD
Strange that you mentioned that. I don't know if you heard about the teen in the UK who was in a coma for 10 months. Woke up to see the world changed very differently from the one he knew before his coma. I can only imagine what that's like.
I remember watching Captain America with my dad when I was younger. I was confused on how Steve still looked the same after 70 years, and I asked my dad how. He said: “he’s a superhero, he’ll never get old.” He’s still right, Captain America will never get old.
They had, the entire 1940s worth of baseball to choose and they chose a game Steve was at before America joined the war? Why not just grab one from the middle of 45 and call it a day?
really puts into perspective how much steve loved peggy when the worst thing on his mind after waking up 70 years later was the date he missed. Glad he got to go back and rightfully live his life with her in endgame
I love the genius of this scene. Steve had been frozen in the arctic for 70 years. Nobody knew where his head would be after he woke up. Would he be sane? Would he be able to speak? Would the serum have helped him or would he be a vegetable? So what does Nick Fury do? He sets up a subtle anachronistic trap. Everything in that room would seem familiar to someone from the 1940s, but everything would be a little... Off. The game they were playing was too early. The lady's outfit is modern. Her bra. Her hair. Her tie. Even the way she speaks. In a few words she feels like a 2010s woman trying to look and sound like a 1940s woman. It's meant to throw Steve off slightly to test him. This isn't a failure on SHIELD's part, it's meant to be the test to see if Steve was still there, mentally. If he just accepted this situation, he would have been lost. But because he was still sharp and still strong, he was able to see through the disguise and realize he wasn't where they said he was.
Plot twist: the radio 'error' was a HYDRA plot. It's a relatively small mistake that could feasibly be justified within SHIELD ranks, but it would potentially drive a newly awakened and potentially not-very-lucid Captain America into violently (re: lethally) fighting his way out of SHIELD custody.
I think it's way more likely that they used something he was familiar with on purpose, they just didn't expect him to flip out. EDIT: Remember, all he had to do is glance out the window for half a second and he would've noticed the flat building and floor.
As someone whos undergone surgery I can imagine atleast a bit of how Cap must have felt. You close your eyes in ones room and you suddenly wake up in the future. Its the closest thing to time travel ever.
I was under for a few hours because of anesthesia for my back and lower body. I distinctly remember not being 100% sedated. I remember the dream I had, and that I woke up during the surgery a few times. But did happen in only a few moments
The closest thing to time travel (or death) is sleep. You sleep everyday and don't know what happens when you're "gone" until you wake up next morning. The brain doesn't have a capacity to gauge the passage of time when you're asleep. Therefore, every time you sleep, assuming that you don't wake up until the morning, it is almost a version of death (or time travel).
It makes me so sad every time I see this clip, knowing that even though he was in the middle of a war, he now is in a time period 70 years later, it still mattered most to him that he made it to the date for the girl he loved.
For an MCU film this ending had quite the Twilight Zone-type feel. While not punished like with most Rod Serling characters with their twist endings, Cap's is still quite heartbreaking.
Good to know SHIELD had ultra specific codes like "drop everything you're doing and go catch Captain America."

Rambling below
The second clue is the clothes.
He could probably hear the soilders waiting around outside.
curledEspecially
Long story short is that they KNEW Steve would be focusing on this woman as she was going to be the one to come in and break the news to him. So they made everything about her look intentionally off.

@shawntipton5078 that's right. In the movie, Steve tours the US because people couldn't just watch him on TV, at most hear him on the radio.
Well yeah, this was intentional from the very beginning
Peggy was shown to be married but she never had pictures of the husband
Another side story is Cap just went back in time to have his date with Peggy but actually didnt spend the rest of his life with her. He decided to spend it with black widow because they were good friends and he never got to say goodbye in the present before she sacrificed herself.
It seems it might be possible because he was highly reluctant to speak of it when asked.

@@captainjefferies9047 I want to believe that's why, but I don't think that's why XD Definitely a detail I kinda wish was brought to light. Like when Fury recruits Steve. During that scene, Steve could've been like "I had my suspicions that something happened.. That room, Time's Square (I think)... One of the things that helped me realize everything... was the fact that a Black man was in a powerful position:)"
I dunno, that would've been cool, but, like I said, I don't think that's why XD

If you say about that. The two billboards behind Steve has a Corona beer billboard and a bacteria virus billboard.

@@quinnmackay-smith9352 but that’s just a “coincidence”
Too bad a coincidence isn’t a real thing, just a made up word.
Strange that you mentioned that. I don't know if you heard about the teen in the UK who was in a coma for 10 months. Woke up to see the world changed very differently from the one he knew before his coma. I can only imagine what that's like.
@TurboTime I hope you’re kidding.
I remember watching Captain America with my dad when I was younger. I was confused on how Steve still looked the same after 70 years, and I asked my dad how. He said: “he’s a superhero, he’ll never get old.” He’s still right, Captain America will never get old.
Also because the ice put him in suspended animation. Its like hitting pause on someone's aging/physical development.
Imagine waking up 70 years later, and realizing that everything you had is gone.

@@luiznavarro6823 it is, realizing that suddenly and out of nowhere everything you knew, everyone you loved, it's just gone
Sounds like a regular morning for me.
They had, the entire 1940s worth of baseball to choose and they chose a game Steve was at before America joined the war? Why not just grab one from the middle of 45 and call it a day?
The problem would most likely be how many games where recorded and available?
SouthernMercenary they can record it themselves
Also, they shouldn't have used black uniforms like that. They would look too much like HYDRA troopers.
Wyatt Peterson but back then THeY ARE HYDRA....😅😅 THEY ALL WORK FOR HYDRA...UN KNOWING LY 😂
@@narakita4315 Yes, but Steve probably THOUGHT they were HYDRA (which they could have been in actuality) but they were S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
really puts into perspective how much steve loved peggy when the worst thing on his mind after waking up 70 years later was the date he missed. Glad he got to go back and rightfully live his life with her in endgame

They practically recycled Mel Gibson's "Forever Young" from 1992.
This just makes me sad and remembering when Marvel/MCU was good. Joe Johnston knocked this one out of the stratosphere.
This idea is brilliant 😲
Interesting
Bruh it’s just a movie. Damn.
Jose Arizmendi it’s just a stick up your ass. Damn.
Jose Arizmendi so movies aren’t allowed to be nuisanced and deep? Shut the fuck up brainlet lol
Plot twist: the radio 'error' was a HYDRA plot. It's a relatively small mistake that could feasibly be justified within SHIELD ranks, but it would potentially drive a newly awakened and potentially not-very-lucid Captain America into violently (re: lethally) fighting his way out of SHIELD custody.
possible
Interesting theory
Accepted headcanon
I think it's way more likely that they used something he was familiar with on purpose, they just didn't expect him to flip out.
EDIT: Remember, all he had to do is glance out the window for half a second and he would've noticed the flat building and floor.
It’s very possible. Interesting theory though.
As someone whos undergone surgery I can imagine atleast a bit of how Cap must have felt. You close your eyes in ones room and you suddenly wake up in the future. Its the closest thing to time travel ever.
I was in the coma. Weirdest shit waking up
@@black_nebula For how long if you don't mind?
I was under for a few hours because of anesthesia for my back and lower body. I distinctly remember not being 100% sedated. I remember the dream I had, and that I woke up during the surgery a few times. But did happen in only a few moments
since he didn't age, it was just like time travel for him.
2:50 this moment right here was when we knew from now on that he would be heartbroken over Peggy 💔
