It’s not often that a doctor is inspired to make a lifestyle change because of a patient, but this is the incredible Galileo moment that Dr. Brian Asbill shares today on the PLANTSTRONG podcast.
As a cardiologist for 19 years, Dr. Brian Asbill had become adept at diagnosing and treating patients with medications and procedures, a variety of chronic diseases, yet many of his “optimally managed” patients continued to suffer from recurrent cardiovascular events.
A couple of years later, a patient gave him a copy of Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn and, shortly after finishing reading it, he met with a patient who was having daily angina and had been told that he would require a third open-heart surgery. Instead of immediate surgery, Asbill gave him the book and told him to come back and see him in three months unless his symptoms worsened.
Three months later, that patient returned and both of their lives were irrevocably changed. He had lost 27 pounds, dropped his cholesterol by 100 points, and, within a week of changing his diet, had started walking on a treadmill thirty minutes daily while requiring NO nitroglycerin tablets for relief of chest pain.
Procedures and prescriptions would not have matched the difference that he had made by simply changing to a whole-food, plant-based diet.

How refreshing to hear a cardiologist support a WFPB diet. I had 95% blockage in the RCA with fatigue as my only symptom. I read the china study and everyone ignored me when I tried to get some feedback at my hospital. I tried and failed my diet without support. 6 years later and another 2 blocked arteries with no symptoms and a negative stress test. If my cardiologist cant diagnose me before I get to 95% blockage then I had to take control. Two years on WFPB, down 30lbs and total cholesterol is 2.6 (100) and no longer have food cravings - what a joy

I was just diagnosed with a 100% blocked LAD with minimal symptoms. My echocardiogram was normal. My labs were good. My EKG was good. I’m in my normal body weight and within normal BMI for my height and weight. I started having slight burning to aching in my chest that went down my left arm and went to the cardiologist and had a nuclear stress test which showed severely blocked LAD. After the heart cath on Thursday is when they found the total blockage. They also found I had created many collateral blood vessels that were successful enough to make my symptoms mild. I also have no muscle damage. I was given some options of which bypass was number 1. My husband and I beat an researching and found your dad’s study. We have completely turned our diet around. I am starting my 6 greens a day and everything that he says to do. Im thankful that I have the time to make these changes to see if I can reverse this blockage.

My husband had a cholesterol level of 6.3 (Australian measurement) last November. , The doctor wrote out a prescription for cholesterol lowering drugs but my husband never got it filled. This week he measured in at 5.3. He got this result by going on a plant-based diet and cycling 40km s week. His diet wasn't even perfect, but it worked. The doctor assumed he had been taking the pills.

Haha, that says everything about doctors :D! I assume that the doctor never told you about the serious side effects statines have? Nature has given us a drug that performs exactly like statines but wo any side effects: BIO RED RICE. It is the little fungi which turns moist rice red that is used. It costs 50 c/daily dose (1tablet). It's an easy way to avoid the high cancer risk and every thing else that comes with statines. Best of luck with your improving health!

@@tlam3309 Hi T, I know that the doctors don't tell you about the statine side effects; there is too much $$ to be made on statines. I read everything I came across about statines over 2 yrs; the more I read, the paler I became: EVERY major organ is effected! To me as a homeopath, Nature has always got a cure, so I started looking. When I came across Bio Red Rice it was tested for 10 yrs, but do you ever hear about it? I warned 2 of my statin eating friends, but both still eat statines today. Everybody makes his own choices... Ruffly 10 % of a population eat statines today. Also try porridge on oats: its fibers absorb gallsalts, so the body takes cholesterol from the blood stream to make more gallsalts; positive terror balance :).

My dad had a heart attack while running and passed away. A month prior had a check up and the doctor told him he was really healthy. He wasn't on any medication and had no regular health problems. His blood pressure was normal.. Looking back , he did eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and even included flax seed, but also ate to much meat and butter. Just because the doctor says you are healthy doesn't mean you are, you just aren't as sick as everyone else.

Great podcast! I’m so proud of this doctor and the long-term trend he described about other doctors moving in his direction. But I’m also really sad that this exposure for patients happens ONLY after they have serious health problems! In reality, ALL PEOPLE at every age need this exposure to lifestyle medicine and complete retraining about what they eat LONG BEFORE they ever have any health problems!! My wife and I started a WFPB lifestyle 12 years ago in our late 50s, and fortunately we did it on our own, without (before!) having any health problems. We are now 69 and 70, ideal weight, ideal blood numbers, very physically active (snow skiing, working out), feel great, and love life. I think watching my dad getting hacked apart by surgery after surgery for invasive cancer in his 50s when I was a teenager ultimately made me realize that I would do ANYTHING to avoid his fate. So I was open to WFPB when I first heard about it. PLEASE do yourself a favor and learn about WFPB NOW while you’re still healthy!!

PLANTSTRONG by Engine 2 - I was born with a congenital heart condition (Tetrology of fallots) and have had 4 open heart surgeries. Then 11 years ago which was about 8 months after my 4th surgery I decided to do away with all animal based foods, initially as a test to see if it was going to help with my high colesterol which I was taking medication for and wasn't doing anything. Within about 6 weeks my level had dropped alot (Vegan at the time). I ended up sticking to the diet. Then on the 18th June, 2024 I saw my Cardiologist and got a shock, the MRI scan that I had a few weeks before hand showed that I had scaring of the heart, and the Cardiologist said he wasn't expecting that. Cardiologist is not sure what the issue is though he thinks it could be Sarcoidosis, so I will be having a PET Scan. As a result of this I have decided to ditch the Vegan diet, which although is healthier in some respects to the SAD diet. So as a result I have decided to go WFPB.

I'm 67 years old .I have been dealing with being overweight, high HDL & LDL

I had a stroke on Jan 2nd 2007 while on the job. I have grown up on a farm that raised hogs and had it's own smoke house. I have to admit after watching Forks over Knives both the Original and the 10 year anniversary. I told my wife let's try this. I had been following the How Not to Die cook book
But I have found I like the Plant Strong Engine 2 and FOK which we are now using the cookbook for everyday meals. I will have my next labs in April.

Hey Rip. This was a great interview and really like Dr. Asbill.
While listening I cooked up something you demo’d on IG (or somewhere) recently. I warmed up a can of Goya garbanzo beans, added nutritional yeast and mashed them with a potato masher. It was delicious! Never would have thought of it, but this is a new favorite. Now I’m gonna experiment with different ways to eat it. Thanks a lot and thanks for all you do!

Thank God for this doctor. I'm 60 and have been vegan for 5 years. From about age 40, took several tries at vegetarianism and finally decided at age 55 to go completely vegan. Now I am 50% raw vegan. My bloodwork is perfect. I had a friend who was a few years older than myself. This past November of 2020 she would have been 64. Many times I asked her to join me to become plant-based/vegan, but she refused. She kept saying she couldn't eat like that. When she would tell me what she ate for dinner it was always things full of animal products like spaghetti with meatballs or chicken and noodles, etc. She was overweight. In November 2019, I was trying to reach her for nearly a week by phone and just left voicemails. Finally on a Thursday she answered, said she was in the hospital and was going to have a stent procedure the next day. She said her apartment manager had to call an ambulance for her because she couldn't breathe and nearly fainted. A few months before this, I noticed she could barely walk half a block without stopping to rest. She said she would talk to me the next day on Friday after the procedure. I was planning to visit her. I never heard from her again. She died the next day although I did not find out for 3 months. I called the hospital and pretended to be her worried sister. Eventually they told me she had been "released." I called her apartment but the manager said I was not on my friend's emergency contact list, so I couldn't be told anything. I sent the police for a well-being check and they said the same thing: they could not tell me because I am not an emergency contact. Her sister eventually called to tell me my friend was dead and had been in the city morgue for 3 months, no one of her family knowing that her body had been sent from the hospital to the morgue. It took authorities 3 months to locate her niece who was the emergency contact but who had moved out of state. I miss my friend every day.

@@lindaripp5902 Thank you for you condolences. I am sorry also to hear of your friend. Most people get caught up on a lifestyle of eating animal products when they are young. I am hearing WFPB doctors stating that the bacteria from animal products gets into the gut flora of babies from baby food and causes cravings for animal products for life unless there is a break from eating that way. Many young people eat animal products and don’t realize that eventually plaque will build up in their arteries and when they get to be my age they will have all sorts of diet-related ailments that could have been avoided. I really hope you will be able to convince your friend, even if it is to change her diet for a few days a week or to go out to eat at a nice vegan restaurant. I don’t want you to go through what I went through with my friend. But I’m glad you decided to change for yourself. God bless. 🙏

What a difference. I am suppose to be getting a cholesterol level this coming week and am hoping to see a big drop in my numbers. They did give me meat (pulled pork) at some point. They didn't ask me if I wanted it. They call it heart healthy because they leave out salt, but leaving out salt doesn't apply to me because I have low blood pressure. In fact, my blood pressure dropped worryingly low while I was in the hospital. BTW, I eat plant-based and that is not fixing my (mostly hereditary) cardiac issues.

Mine were meat and egg beaters/eggs (breakfast), dairy, processed turkey sandwiches, white pasta and mostly fruit with minimal veg but there was no salt. I asked them about it and nobody had a clue, that is what the heart association recommends. I was a vegan several years ago and followed Dr Esselstyn, Rip, Dr McDougal and Joel Fuhrman and I never forgot any of it because it seemed so natural to me. I am back on it 100% now and feeling better. I feel very fortunate to have that background because I have no intention of spending the rest of my life eating pills. I only know that I feel better eating like this and trust that it will get better. I hope you get it figured out.

Now one of my bypass arteries is ‘blocked’ again and the other 70% narrowed.I am slim and have been exercising all the time like dancing 4x a week and walking a few times a week, never drank alcohol or smoked, but eat red meat 3x a week, chicken 2x and fish or vegetarian at other times. I do not eat any smoked meat. I have always watched my diet but even more so after the first stent. My cardiologist is surprised of my condition and so am I and we can only blame family history for this. I have no other medical conditions, besides GERD. Would you think that a plant based diet would help me, even if I don’t need to loose any weight? Thank you for your advise.

We would also invite you to join our Rescue 10x program - our next session kicks of March 30th with ten weeks of group coaching and following a very prescriptive eating plan designed to accelerate your progress. Please visit rescue10x.com for details.

I love to eat grains but only rice seems to have less than 150 calories per 100 grams, your grain eating have to be below 150 calories per 100 grams for reducing undesirable fats from your body
