I'm not sure if switches can switch pieces off the restricted sides. Since they also can't switch switches, seems like the best strategy is 1 reflector and defender on either side of the king, and 2 switches in front of the king and defender. I think that may be unbeatable, if you can get your king over there safely.

I used to play this all the time. My dad found the original version at Goodwill and I got hundreds of plays out of it. They had a special piece where the lazer would both reflect and go through it , so you had 2 beams to work it. It was like $15 for the 2 pieces but they already made an empty slot for it in the box which was a really really nice touch. As a kid I played this game so freaking much and it was one of those were Id get like 4 or 5 rounds out of it before I got bored. Its a seriously fun game and its awesome to see it updated to nicely
Fun fact the laser chess concept dates all the way back to the 1987 video game "Laser Chess". However this particular version was invented by totally different people around 2005 (and originally released as "Khet").
Dr. Michael Larson is a professor at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. I remember taking a tour of the engineering school and we went into his lab and he was showing us a prototype of this game. He called it Khet. They ended up selling it under that name for a while then this came out as Khet 2.0 but under the name Laser Chess.
This is actually similar to a game called Khet that was around a few years ago. In that game, the laser was integrated into the board, and could not be rotated. They even sold a "Splitter" expansion piece, which would refract the beam when struck, creating two beams and allowing savvy players to capture up to two pieces per turn. I do like this updated version, as the modular design of the lasers means you don't have to replace the while board in the event of a malfunction.
I have an older version of that game. All I do remember is that the king piece would make a sound when it was hit by a laser, and you can rotate each mirror piece 30°, 45°, and 90°. The board itself had to be put together but you could configure it differently. The mirror pieces were all the same the only difference was the color (either red or yellow).
This reminds me of a game I had back in the day called Laser Battle. It was sort of similar, but it only had the mirrors and the bases were round, so you could put them at any angle you wanted to.
One design change I would make is making the board the battery housing, and laser slots have connectors. This way you can have a longer-lasting AA or AAA stick inside powering both of the lasers at the same time instead of two small watch batteries powering each of the lasers individually
Immediate issue I see with it is that you can pretty easily create impenetrable setups around your king with 4 switches and/or reflectors. Dunno how feasible those are to create from the starting positions, but stuff like that is always instantly worrying if you want to play the game more than 10 times.
Yeah but if you do that, you won't have enough pieces to kill their king, unless someone you get lucky enough that their pieces are in the right position
@@captainnugget471 of course it is a highly defensive setup, but it still leaves me with some pieces to poke and prod, also if he makes a mistake I could move out of my defensive posture. And even if I have no chance whatsoever at launching an attack, and game that has very clear forced draws has some issued (although again - this depends on the starting setup)
I had a knock-off version of this as a kid. The lasers weren't as powerful so we didn't get as satisfying of a glow on captured pieces, and the mirrored pieces were slightly misangled so the laser went off course after a certain number of bounces. Still, I have fond memories of playing with this neat novelty!

My friend has the game khet(essentially the same thing) which he found at goodwill, and your review really made me want to give it a chance and play it next time I see him. Thank you for the review
Think geek used to have a game like this called Khet. It had an Egyptian motif and had more pieces and a tower piece expansion that added a 3d chess kind of play to it.
This is literally a direct copy of another game of a similar game called "Laser Khet" which orginally came out in 2005, had an expansion set in 2008, and then a revamped version called "Laser Khet 2.0" in 2011. It had an Egyptian theme, and had the EXACT same pieces and functions, and the exact same board layout. This game is literally a direct copy of Khet, seeing how this came out in 2017
By my logic it takes 11 turns to get from that starting position to an invincible formation around your king. 11 moves is probably long enough that if your opponent lets you do it, he deserves it, but it's fun to work out. Also, if rotating the laser is free the starting position allows both players to make captures on each of their first 2 turns, which is weird.

This is actually really fun. If you like chess or checkers you'll love this.
I saw an ad for this, glad you're reviewing it :D
Wait no that was Khet
This guy has a normal yet distinct personallity that makes his vids have so many views
This game is literally a direct copy of Khet, seeing how this came out in 2017
My childhood right here. Along with Crossfire. Great memories.
