I have to be honest. Farish really should switch to magnets for coupling the units together. Its less messing about. I might get the Dapol one because of the magnetic couplers. Will be interesting to see what the newer models will be like from Dapol.
Hi Nick - good comparison review. Right about the couplings - the Farish version is difficult to couple whereas the Dapol version isn't. I'd possibly go with Dapol one only because you will get the 5 cars and better couplings. Downside is the noise - although Dapol might sort it this time around. Cheers Euan
Nice comparison Nick, I have both voyager and super voyager in dapol but they will probably need a good running in and oiling. The only reason I have them is due to the fact that they were both released a long time before farish had even thought about it. All the best Tony
Excellent video and an impressive layout so decided to subscribe. I have just started out in dcc with the Castle Pullman train set and I absolutely love it. In your experience will the electro points work with the set track? Thanks
They will yes, just be sure to wire them up with all the correct way, do t forget isolating rail joiners on the inside. I actually used unifrogs on mine, which is a cross between electrofrog and insulfrog and works amazing.
@@Rule1ModelRailways Many thanks for getting back to me and for the advice you have given me. I might try a unifrog but they seem very expensive but if it works with set track it might just be worth the expense. Lots of things to get my head around as it all seems a bit of a minefield. Hope you are keeping well during this pandemic and with another shutdown looming in a few days - all seems a bit bewildering. Cheers
@@malcolmpayne754 Thank you! And that is no problem, any questions you have ask away and I'll only be happy to help. Unifrogs have the ability to be set up as insulfrog, but wired in incredibly easily at a future date as an electrofrog should you wish to do so, which is their huge advantage.
@@Rule1ModelRailways You are most welcome for the sub and thanks. I think I might go down the multi frog route. Is there much modification to do to the point for my dcc layout?
Both Dapol and the farish models were very under powered they dont like tight curves or inclines , I'm looking forward to seeing and testing the new models to see if they have resolved their old issues . the other good news is that because both dapol and farish are releasing these again we can get spares to fix the old ones . Geoff
@@Rule1ModelRailways unfortunately DCC supplies and Dapol both don't have the 12 tooth Gear required for the drive wheels which split. Many folks have poor running units Because of this and soon as these become available these drive wheels can be fixed
A really good comparison there Nick and even though I'm 00 I found it very interesting. I've found similar paint differences with some of my Bachmann and hornby models where the Bachmann seem a lot better cheers Andy
Good comparison of the two. I received email newsletter from Gaugemaster on Thursday announcing the new Dapol release listing the price at £225.00p and since found out Hattons have priced it at about £195;00p which is somewhat of a big price difference of about £30.00p. I was almost tempted to buy a second hand Dapol Voyager set my local model shop had for sale recently but pleased now I did not buy with Dapol re-releasing the set in choice of three livery's so can be run in present day livery if wanting and not as in past years.
Hi Nick, great video and very informative 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I have two of the Farish sets, both second hand, but I find them very under powered 😩 Around curves they slow significantly 😱 Only four driving wheels for such a long train is a weakness 🤔They do look fantastic though 😍 Have pre ordered a Dapol one for next year in Cross Country, so looking forward to trying it. At least Dapol have a record of updating previous releases, unlike Bachmann 🤬 Many thanks for sharing this and very best wishes from County Wicklow ☘️
Thanks Paul! My voyager set makes it's way around 1st radius set track OK, and mine seems to be the only fast one there is, but I have taken it apart and reassembled it twice so far because of the milage on it
Had both the Farish and the Dapol versions. I'm usually a fan of Farish, but the couplings and the low gearing were too much and it had to go. I have several Dapol Super Voyagers and although they can be a bit noisy, they are the better model for me. Also the schaffenberg couplings on the later driving cars (Dummy set and the Cross Country sets) work really well

Magnets would indeed be a great upgrade
Sounds like a real voyager the Dapol one. 😂 They have never been quiet trains.
Like the new video.Loads of detail. Thanks very much.
Thanks take care
Thank you Dave!
Hi nick
Do they have working head and tail lights ???
Peter
Both sets do, yes :)

Exactly my thoughts too :D

Great point!
Brilliant video layout coming together now nicely
Thank you!
Both manufacturers are saying they are using the existing tooling, so the review will be accurate for the new models too

Do you still need 3 Decoders for the GF?
Just two for the GF :)
From this video, it's more tempting to wait for the Farish model. Are they only 4 car units though?
That's right as voyagers only run as 4 car units, Dapols will be 5 car super voyagers
@@Rule1ModelRailways okay thank you

I never thought of that with the spares, still however dcc supplies have most of the spares for the 221s which is good

Thanks for your support. I have Subbed to you too. Thanks Alan at Buckland Junction. Regards Alan...

Best to wait and see what the mechanisms are like in these new units for sure
The £225 is RRP for the model, so I would expect most retailers to sell closer to the £195
I found the trailer cars of the Farish 220 to be draggy, VERY draggy, so much friction that one of the drive shafts sheered after 3 weeks
Both are nice models in my opinion nice video as always.
Thank you :D
