I appreciate what you do thank you! Pry saved me $1000! You happened to post this video just in time it was like fate!
This will not FIX anything. All it does is reset the adaptive values for a little while and resets the modules until the conditions are met for the DTC to flag again. This will also stop a vehicle from passing an emissions test. A bad bandaid at best, but not fixing anything.

Not sure which is worse, used car or new car dealers. THEY'RE ALLLL CROOKS. !!!
The problem is that the service desk manager (and the service desk person) gets a commission for the repairs they sell, so there is an incentive to sign you up for repairs.

I like that trick about emptying the power in the capacitor by turning the headlight switch on (with battery disconnected)... I learned something, thank you Scotty!!!
Scotty I watch at least 2 of your videos everyday. This was so helpful. My tire light will never go out. I was told I have to Toyota so they can fix...but Im gonna save a chunk of change and try reset as you showed on this video. Thank you.
Is it the spare tire? It may need air. If they have sensors anyway. My jeep liberty is always complaining about that. Alot of tire shops wont put the sensors where they are suppose to go after they rotate them.
One more reason to check ALL your tires pressures frequently.
I work at a tire shop, we have to "relearn" the car with a tpms tool because each sensor is now in a different position, your sensors should last 5 to 7 years, I would imagine discount would do it for free, but if not try to take it to an independent reputable shop and they can also tell you what sensor is bad if it's only one or 2, or maybe they just need to be "relearned"
Yeah alot of tire pressure sensors need to be readjusted afterwards... And nobody really does it so the light stays on
A guy at work had this with his Toyota truck, it was the spare tire mounted underneath!
It works I learned this along time ago from an OG mechanic like him which isn't many around anymore sadly.
Make sure the head lights are turned back off before reconnecting the battery!

To a more efficient reset, after you unplug the lead off the battery, press the brake pedal a few times to discharge the capacitors faster.
Would unplugging the ECU fuse work just as well?
@@azmanhussain It would, but somehow taking the battery terminals out is better. If you have MOT/SMOG/IPO this is not recommended as your ECU get's to learn driving habits, fuel management and all that sort of stuff, so it will mess up your emissions. It learns it all for about 500KM or something
If you have a Honda with a anti theft Radio code , just make sure you know the code before you do this .
Because when you reconnect the battery terminal , you'll have to have it or your radio won't work .
And BTW, always disconnect the NEGATIVE TERMINAL so you ll have less chance of shorting out something .
Thank you.
How would i enter that on my honda civic 8th gen for example? I have it but how would I enter the code
I prefer Toyota and Hyundai but once had a 03 acura mdx (wheel fell off would never go back probably off that and it wasn't even 150,000 miles yet) and when we got a new battery for it we had that issue too even for that year. Yes 👍 about Honda the radio get 👌 confused.
I see people saying this doesn't solve the real problem with the car, but he said that this is for when the computer is confused (computer itself is the problem) not when there's an actual hardware problem that the computer is detecting
Well explained! 😊
Very well explained :)
@Scotty Kilmer - This is fantastic advice! A simple solution for many issues
Before you do that, take a sheet of paper and write down the pre-sets on your car's radio, because those selected channels will be gone after you disconnect the battery, and you will have to re-enter them again into the radio once you reconnect the battery.
If you don’t know the radio stations you listen to by heart, it’s a good bet you don’t listen to the radio much to matter

.
where can i find the radio code?
Remember to have your radio code handy on early models.
How do you enter that code on a normal radio? There's no numbers
@@gmarcovc on my Audi ('95 A8) )you hold down DX and FM until 0000 appears on the display. Using the memory buttons, change it to the correct code (memory 1 will cycle position 1, memory 2 position 2....etc). Press and hold DX and FM again...radio should turn on. Get it wrong 3 times...you have to wait 1 hour to try again 3 times.
@@philipmiller5036 well this applies to any car with secured radio. Even modern cars have this security "feature". As long as you know the code, there is no extra cost involved..since you as the owner are doing it... When I described it, it sounds compliecated, but once you do it a few times, you can usually do it in under a minute.
My 2004 Saab divorces the radio if the battery is disconnected
@@gmarcovcm.p
Couple things wrong here.. firstly if there's issues with your car then you need to fix the issues instead of constantly resetting stuff until it notices the issue again.. secondly if you do want to pull your battery terminal off in order to power down your computer so it reboots you don't have to wait 5 minutes you just go push the brake and that will suck any additional residual power.
Wow, new about disconnecting battery, didn’t know about the headlights.. thankz

Works every time. You have to turn the lights (or any electrical item) on to completely drain the capacitors (work very similar to batteries) in the computer (ECM).
Another fast way to drain them is to short circuit them by touching terminal you took off to the other terminal. This is the same as using a screw driver across both leads or a capacitor. This will NOT cause a short across the battery if all wires are off either side of the battery.
How to “fix” your car, when you have no idea what’s going on and you just want the check engine light to be off
Ya I think this is how Scotty fixes most DTC faults. Unless it is a spark misfire that can be fixed by replacing a plug. Other then that this is how he thinks you fix all other DTCs and electrical problems.
@@thelostshadowofhanzo If the fault is genuine, the computer will see it again after a certain number of driven miles and trip the check engine light. This fix is for a simple computer malfunction where the is no fault or intermittent fault.

My car had a big rust hole on the fender. I did the exact same thing is this video. I’ll give you the results after I reconnect the battery
Don't do this just before a state inspection. The state scanner will detect that the computer was recently reset and you'll have to drive another couple hundred miles before reinspection.
Or about 50..
After having a battery replaced, my mechanic said don't return until the tripometer says 150
@@joejavacavalier2001 is only about 50. Because I use this to pass smog when I have a check engine light lol disconnect computer and reset the light, then drive for 20-30 minutes and then head to the smog booth. Works every time
Has nothing to do with miles. Each mfr has a different set of complex parameters to pass called a drive cycle. Viewed in detail they appear almost impossible to quickly target, in average takes about 2-3 weeks of operation. Cycle your HVAC system frequently, can assist as well as driving in a variety of conditions, freeway, city, etc. Hondas drive cycle includes decelrating from 50 mph to 0 without applying brakes. Is this even possible?
If you have an obd2 scanner just check to see if ur readiness monitors are complete. In CA all must be except for evap.
The last Chevy I had required the battery disconnect monthly. Nice ride except for a fleet of 4, none made 50k miles without loosing the transmission. The rebuild shop must have had 50 Chevy's all on the 1/2 ton frame, guess that was early 2000's.
If you live in California and your vehicle needs to be smoged DO NOT do this! Your vehicles computer will not be ready for a smog test and you will probably have to drive hundreds of miles to get it ready. Other than that I say OK.
You are 100% right about that. And for some cars those drive cycles are not even possible on Southern Calif freeways, which have traffic 24/7 every day of the year.
For me it only took 30 to 40 miles of driving for everything to reset.
Depends on the car, but sure, you're right. Some cars need to be driven a couple hundred miles to learn driving habits.
What if you need a new battery?
When do you use a 10 watt 1 ohm resistor to reset the computer vs just disconnecting the battery and turning on the headlights? This short is different from the other video Scotty made for resetting the computer for modern cars Feb of 2022? What is the threshold for modern 2015 and up? Any advice is appreciated. Is there a difference in results between the two methods?
To empty the full circuit. Touch the positive lead with the negative wire that you just disconnected. That is what should be done when welding on the car and will prevent any damage to the computer.
Scotty is awesome!
Remove the negative terminal.
(Should be the black one.)
Scott didn't mention that for those who may not know.
Also, there are reasons NOT to do this...so be sure you research and understand the benefits and pitfalls of doing this. You should put a code reader on first to find out what codes are present. After 1 to 50 miles of driving, those codes (or check engine light) may come back.
I only know a little, so don't take this as everything you need to know.
which terminal u disconnected??
positive or negstive??
does it matter which one??
Question Scotty did you take off the positive or the negative terminal?
YOU can drain the caps by grounding the negative after removing from battery.
A very good info. TQVM. Scotty.
I love scotty kilmer.
Hey did you disconnect both terminals? Or just the positive one?
Negative 1
That just saved my 2010 Nissan Sentra from a Service Engine Soon Light problem. After plugging in the OBD reader from autozone it says U0101 meaning transmission control module was not communicating properly. After doing the power dissipation and restart the light went away. Saved me either $150 or thousands of I got a new car.
It might work on that car that you have there, but for my car this won't do anything, there's a specific sequence you have to do turning the engine on and off to reset the computer, otherwise the values remain stored, as it is a non-volatile memory.
That looks like a 90's Toyota. What about my 2008 Toyota Prius that you said requires a memory keeper if you disconnect the battery?
Works on older cars not so much newer cars. new cars set hard codes. even if the battery has been disconnected for a year it will still remeber the code. also to make it go faster, disconnect the negative cable and touch it to the positive cable, it will instantly drain all capacitors
Wait ... What? You mean to tell me I have a smart car? It recently started resetting itself! And I went and bought a new battery for NOTHING?!? 🤯
JUST KIDDING BUT IVE LEARNED SO MUCH FROM THIS MAN! I FIX ALMOST EVERYTHING BU MYSELF NOW 💪💯
Turning a computer off and on solves at least 50% of the problems.
Scotty, I prefer the one I resetting your computer with the one home disconnecting battery with the capacitor. That was the best one.
Scotty, you never mentioned the NEGATIVE terminal.
...to disconnect the NEGATIVE terminal, that is...
always disconnect the negative side of the battery not the positive because if the spanner u use hit the body on the positive side you will get a very nasty spark/fire. battery explosion and u get hurt. not good idea.
It helps to turn on the ignition when the battery is disconnected as it physically connects the computers connection to they system.

I remember doing this to reset my car idle after just coming out the shop the same day for the same problem!
My 04 RAV4 runs like crap after I do that - - for a few miles while the computer re learns proper mixture & timing. I think I have a small leak somewhere in the brake circuits. @@yjago i highly suspect the cam code is your real issue. The the maf code is being thrown by the computer because it's expected value isn't reporting back the way it should. In many cases codes can be triggered because of another problem. A cam timing or phasing problem will absolutely affect airflow parameters into the engine and the code is the computers reaction to that. I bet your timing is off, or the actuator controlling timing is plugged or broken and it's stuck in one direction.
