How to ACE Your Next Behavioral Interview (don't use STAR)!

  • STAR vs. CARL: What's the best behavioral interview method? In this video I compare the popular STAR answer method with the more comprehensive CARL answer format, share sample behavioral interview questions and answers, and end with a recommendation on when to use each method.
    The STAR behavioral interview method suffers from 2 limitations: (1) It allocates too much time for background information and not enough on your accomplishments, and (2) Doesn’t naturally incorporate your learnings as part of the answer prompts. Therefore, many interviewers find the STAR technique of interviewing a little bit robotic as candidates just seem to memorize answers and spit them out during the interview.
    With the CARL interview method, the “L” stands for “Learning” so you should really allocate more time on reflecting what your actions and results meant for future use cases (i.e. what if you faced a similar situation again, what would you do next time?) This is where the CARL interview framework really shines.

    Great video and breakdown! I'm in the process of looking for a job after coming off a sabbatical, and I was really struggling with forming answers for behavioural questions (since it's also been years since I've interviewed). Your videos have really helped me structure my answers and understand what's important to highlight. Awesome channel Jeff!!

    Great to the point as always. I always include the "Learning" part in almost all situations. So I guess I'm using STARL :D. Anyway, agree with your point that an answer should focus on forward thinking, not backward situation.

    Great video as always! I think you made some really good points there, especially when you pointed out how using the star method can seem robotic. Considering how widespread that method is, stories can really come off as scripted and generic given how often interviewers ask these behavioral questions. Thanks so much for sharing this with us! Always great to add to our “toolbox” as someone else commented :D

    • @JeffSu
      @JeffSu  3 года назад

      Yup! That insight actually came from a few recruiter friends of mine who were complaining (over lunch) about how so many candidates were basically reading off scripts on the phone and it was clear that they weren't being very natural. Very off-putting!
