I wish I’d done roof building when I was a dapper. A real admirable skill. I’ve done a few roofs and it’s worked out nice but I always winged it. Proper job.
It's takes real skill and experience to build a roof like this. Nowadays people just want pre-fabricated trusses and a gable end. Love seeing hips and valleys and quality craftsmanship 👌🏻
@@Ultimate-roofing-square. Would loved to actually meet you in the flesh mate but unfortunately even though I worked as a carpenter for over 20 years my health is not upto scratch these days. Would have loved to have worked with you mate on a few roofs your a legend. 👏 👍
Hi , looking good . Just to let you know a dragon tie is half jointed at 45 degrees across the corner of a hip roof ? You have just cut a piece of 4x2 at 45 degrees ? Across the corner ( not doing a lot of good really ) . Could put a tie bar rod across the plates so the roof won’t spread ?
A proper dragons foot is a piece of timber notched perpendicular around the hip that is sat and nailed on top of the wall plate, its purpose is to provide better nailing points for the hip as when you skew some nails in the birdsmouth you are always near the endgrain of the wallplate and can often split, its mainly used on large roofs to keep it secure while under construction, as when the jacks are on it cant go anywhere,
Mark I know you are just having some fun but Dan and I have worked together for a while now and he likes the Q&A approach. If I thought it was pissing him off I would change my approach but he doesn't have an ego.

Buy a Swanson speed square and comes with a little book that tells you everything about how to cut rafters. And in the back is a table that literally spells out the length of any rafter depending on the width of your building
nice job spot on need more appetences trained by you . and people like you ?government needs to make it worth your wile in a big way as we have left the cheap labour mafia of the EU { good riddance}.
Another quality job from Dan, no waffling for ages just straight down to business, let the hands and the tools do the talking!
He is short on waffle big on results.
The man’s a magician. It’s always a pleasure and enthralling to watch Dan work his ‘magic’ with timber.

Those posts/ring beam, are these just tantalised posts? Looks like kiln dried! Or have they been planed?
They have been planed and treated. They are not in contact with the ground and are well covered by the roof so there should be no rot
Was that Headcorn by any chance. I used to live there many years ago!
Yes it is Headcorn
Nice video, but it would be good to see more detail on the workings of each cut etc.
