    What I love most about the Wartime Era: All the films were based on Mickey Mouse and his friends, something you wouldn't get to see in any other era (except Fantasia from Golden Age and Fantasia 2000 from the Post Renaissance).

      Make Mine Music and Ichabod & Mr. Toad were not, and only a single sequence of Melody Time had them. So not totally accurate.

      A couple of other bits of inaccuracy.
      1. The two segments from "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad" were based on SHORT STORIES, not novels, like the narrator said.
      2. The narrator pronounced the Disney character Jose Carioca's first name as "JOE Zay." Actually, it's pronounced "HO Zay." (BTW: the name is Spanish for "Joseph.")

    I would say it's interesting that many of these were originally planned to be full length movies, but WW2 cut into the budget. Again it makes me think what would have happened if they were able to go full movie for some of these features. And again I wonder what Walt would think of the current quarantine going on. Although given how anti-communist he was in life, I don't think he would like his company dealing with China, especially if he learned how they were blatantly abusing human rights.

    This era is _truly_ the most forgotten and least talked about eras of Disney ever. I'll admit, I haven't seen half of these Wartime Era movies. I only ever saw Saludos Amigos, The Three Caballeros, and Ichabod and Mister Toad. But for some odd reason, I also first saw "Johnny Fedora and Alice Blue Bonnet" (from Make Mine Music) and the "Mickey and the Beanstalk" (from Fun and Fancy Free) on TV in the 90s as a standalone (I believe it was on the Disney Channel?).

      Same man. I had both on VHS when I was little. I loved the psychedelic visuals in "The Three Caballeros" and probably my earliest exposure to Latin American culture. And I remember them slicing that bean into slivers in "Mickey and the Beanstalk" and going crazy with hunger. That always creeped me out haha

    Sadly, this is easily the most neglected era of Disney animation. There are music references in the Disney Parks, and some of the shorts are ingrained into early Disney shorts collections, but besides that, you would never know there were 6 full length films. I do however love the artistic style of these films, which I agree is very Fantasia-inspired, and that is a beautiful thing!

    You know people these days mostly remember the Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad film for The Sleepy Hollow segment and apparently that seems to be the segment EVERYONE tends to like positively than the Wind in the Willows segment due to the darker themes, the Headless Horseman, and Bing Crosby's narration and singing much like how The Mickey and the Beanstalk segment from Fun and Fancy Free was well known instead of Bongo.

    • @jacoblakins6628
      @jacoblakins6628 4 года назад

      How ironic that Toad is the lesser known/appreciated segment of the film and yet it's the one that got an opening day attraction dedicated to it in Disneyland and Disney World and a restaurant in Disneyland Paris. Personally, I think an Ichabod ride would be AMAZING!!

    • @EChacon
      @EChacon 4 года назад +2

      @@jacoblakins6628 Only people remember the Mr. Toad segment for just the ride at Disneyland and especially Walt Disney World (that was closed down), but when people ask about the animated segment of Wind in the Willows, certain commentators say "the short is cute, but Mr. Toad is just plain silly" as the Rotoscopers podcast episode says it themselves. On top of that, when the 70th Anniversary of the film happened Disney ONLY released a storybook tie-in for "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" but not Wind in the Willows, and on the D23 website, it's was ONLY you guessed it, "Sleepy Hollow" but not one dedicated to Mr. Toad/Wind in the Willows.
      d23.com/these-5-fun-facts-about-the-legend-of-sleepy-hollow-will-lift-your-spirits/
      I'm not agreeing with the masses that the Mr. Toad segment is "forgotten", I'm grateful that their is an audience that loves The Wind in the Willows segment from the film (regardless if they only remember the short for the ride at Disneyland and Disney World), It's as I said before, just like how "Fun and Fancy Free" had most people remember the film for the "Mickey and the Beanstalk" segment because of Mickey Mouse and it was a better known segment than "Bongo", in the case with "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad", most people acknowledged the film just for the "Sleepy Hollow" segment than the "Wind in the Willows" segment because the former just like "Mickey and the Beanstalk" was the better known segment than the latter, as it's based on a Washington Irving story which certain people read this story on Halloween especially during School courses, Bing Crosby's narration and the Headless Horseman.

    • @TheGerkuman
      @TheGerkuman 4 года назад +1

      That being said, when it comes to the cultural rememberance of the two books, especially in the UK, Wind in the Willows is more well known. Though that might be because Wind in the Willows keeps getting adapted.

  • @talkaboutcinema3304
    @talkaboutcinema3304 4 года назад +8

    Good list. As a whole, Ichabod and Mr. Toad and 3 Caballeros do seem to tie together the best, although if we’re looking at individual animated segments, I think Mickey and the Beanstalk is the best. It’s a shame that that didn’t get made as an animated feature as initially intended. I also really would have liked to have seen the Morgan’s Ghost feature that had been planned as well for Mickey.
    Also, I agree about Saludos Amigos. Even though it technically qualified as a feature film, it never had the feeling of a true feature due to its length (40 minute features were common in the silent era, but it was no longer as common by this point and, of course, the fact that Saludos was made up of shorter segments anyway doesn’t help).
    It is interesting that so many celebrities of the time appeared in these features. Disney initially was against the practice of using recognizable names in his animated features, but Bing Crosby was one of the most popular entertainers of the day, and other performers like Jerry Colonna (Casey at the Bat narrator, and later the March Hare in Alice in Wonderland) and Dennis Day (Johnny Appleseed) were very popular radio performers, so he must have lifted this restriction by that point.

    I loved the Mr Toad / Ichabod movie when I was a child, still is one of my favorite Disney classics. It's such an odd pairing but I can't seperate both 'shorts' in my head. 😂 I also LOVED the "brazil" song at the end of Saludos Amigos!

  • @Vimacone
    @Vimacone 4 года назад +23

    The package films are grossly underrated films. These are some of my all time favorite Disney features.
    My ranking of these lesser known gems is more or less similar to yours.
    Of the two Latin American features, The Three Caballeros is much stronger than Saludos Amigos. It has a lot more heart and passion. The latter film is very dry in it’s attempt to illustrate the cultures. (While Pedro is a cute segment, it doesn’t lend itself to depicting a culture).
    Every segment in Melody Time is very enjoyable and full if heart. Make Mine Music has a great diversity of music and visual styles, but never grabbed me like Melody Time did.
    Of the two story driven films, I prefer Fun And Fancy Free a little more, because of the light hearted musical numbers. Bongo often gets flack for its thin narrative, but the songs by Dinah Shore are very engaging (I hope Disney will put these out). Both segments in Ichabod and Mr. Toad have some of the best personality animation of the era and contain very strong staging and atmosphere. A foreshadow of what was to come from the Silver Age.

    Your ranking and mine match exactly, and your thoughts on each echo mine save for one thing: I actually prefer The Wind in the Willows over the The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow (but agree Sleepy Hollow has better animation). I wish Willows had become its own full-length feature, but I'm grateful for what we've got. Interestingly, I feel like Ichabod & Mr. Toad was a sort of training ground for Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland. The Wind in the Willows' crazy antics are very much like Alice's (which is probably why I love it so much), while Ichabod's directorial style and tone reminds me of Cinderella's. As always, great video! I'm really excited for your Silver Age video as that's tied with the Renaissance as my favorite Disney era.

    The funny thing is, for the longest time, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad" were only available in separate home video releases. I had both VHS at some point, and for the longest time, I didn't realize they were supposed to be the same movie. Clearly an attempt to make twice as much money from having to buy two different videos, somehow this makes them both play better.

      Eh they did the same thing with Mickey and the beanstalk, but at least they added some new hosts in the form of Ludwig Von Drake and Herman to separate that version from it’s original theatrical release with Bongo, even if they have the same ending with Willie the giant turning out to be real all along regardless of who the narrators are.

      I think I remember those VHS, actually. Never had them, but they were in one of those little pamphlets they used to come with. They were part of the "Disney Classics" series, if I recall. Now that I think about it, I think the only versions of those movies available at the time were the cut up separate releases. Makes sense. That was when they were very reluctant to release most of their movies on home video. I guess that was a workaround to release them as cut versions. Plus, double the tapes you had to buy.

    • @Thenumber1yoshi
      @Thenumber1yoshi 3 года назад

      @@mightyfilm I guess the budget issues for Disney during World War II was actually something that ended up being a blessing in disguise for 90’s Disney, as the fact that they essentially had to package short films together to make a full feature length film really lent itself well when it came to selling home videos to the masses, especially when a lot of the stories often had nothing to do with each other, I don’t even think people even associated the story of The Wind in the Willows with The Legend of Sleepy Hollow until Disney had to put them together as a cost cutting measure to make a full film, I mean I’m pretty sure those are works by two separate authors.

With Make Mine Music, eh I'd give ya Casey at the Bat, Peter and the Wolf, and The Whale who wanted to sing at the met. In my opinion 1.5 outta 2 is better than 3 outta 10, but that's just my opinion.

      @@scadwea9109 Eh. I'm kinda with him on this one. I think of each one of the Package films as a shorts collection. Kinda like the Disney short films collection. And honestly I like the shorts in Saludos better than Caballeros. With Saludos I like the one with Donald as a tourist, Goofy as a cow boy, and kinda Pedro the Plane. With Caballeros I like Pablo the Penguin, the flying Donkey, and... No I guess it's just those two. Well and the song but that's about it.
      Yeah you may have noticed I didn't put the last Saludos short where José takes Donald to the city, and honestly that's kinda the rest of Caballeros only it's longer, and they replaced the BTS looks of Saland replaced it with trippy imagery, and Donald chasing live action women. And honestly I get really bored.
      Also also, I also like the BTS perspective of Saludos Amigos, cause I'm really into BTS stuff of Disney films, that's shorta why I like films like The Reluctant Dragon, and Waking Sleeping Beauty.
      But I'm glad you like The Three Caballeros, because anything someone is willing to make, is worth someone willing to love it.

    A very informative ranking! I remember watching a few of these shorts as a kid but overall I have no solid ranking as much as I hope I can watch some of these someday! Ichabod and Mickey and the Beanstalk are the stand outs to me, as I remember watching them. Zé Carioca gets bonus points with me since I'm brazilian, but it also bugs me a little since it perpetuated (or started) so many stereotypes about my country that the world doesnt seem to look past. I suppose it turned heads to our culture though. All that said, some of these shots feel like very interesting animation experiences and I'd love to check them out someday!

      My thoughts exactly!
      Then again, the reason why I actually (strongly) like Fun and Fancy Free (well, let alone Mickey and the Beanstalk) is because of its high level of scariness!
      And it’s not like the ventriloquist scene in the same movie where they just made the segment scary when it wasn’t even called for.

      Richard Davis I'm mexican. I didn't knew it was propaganda until a couple of years ago. Personally, I don't think it is a racist film, but I can see a lot of stereotypes in place. I don't think it is insensitive, but there is also some sexist stuff. Also, it is an animated movie from the 40's of the last century, so we cannot fully judge it with our current standards. Just enjoy it as it is: the incredible animated film you love since your childhood

    I'm with you on "Ichabod and Mr. Toad" and "The Three Caballeros" being the best of this lot. As for the others, I'd rank "Melody Time" as my third favorite since I enjoyed most of the shorts, and it was consistent with its music theme. "Make Mine Music" would fourth for similar reasons, but I didn't like some shorts as much as others.
    Fifth would be "Fun and Fancy Free," since it was kind of a jumble with the different elements it incorporated (Jiminy Cricket, Edgar Bergen, Bongo, and Mickey), although I loved the 'Mickey and the Beanstalk' segment. And in last place is "Saludos Amigos" for its short runtime and acting more like a documentary than an actual movie, though the cartoons were fun and I admire how they tried to teach South American culture.

      Honestly, there's something about the randomness of Fun and Fancy Free I find really appealing. Here's what I wrote about it and Ichabod and Mr. Toad on my blog.
      "I prefer the earlier movie. I’ll grant you that it’s the more random of the two. Even the title, Fun and Fancy Free, is kind of arbitrary. (While both segments are lighthearted on the whole, the characters in them do face grim challenges at certain points.) But its randomness feels like it’s by design almost and, for me, is part of its appeal. The slightly less random quality of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, on the other hand, makes its randomness stand out more. Why just two stories about larger-than-life literary characters, an English one and an American one? Why not throw in a French one or something?"

      Yeah I gotta agree with the live action segment of Fun & Fancy Free. A man in his 40s in a room with a little girl? Yeah that wouldn't fly at all today.
      Honestly, I think there's a "better" version of Mickey & The Beanstalk. I remember having a VHS that switched out the Edgar Bergen segments with Professor Ludwig Von Drake. It gets rid of the original's awkwardness but it does cut a scene or two of the original cartoon, like with the dragonflies.

      @@EChacon I can't speak for everybody I'm only speaking for myself. But from what I can tell, I've always liked Ludwig von Drake and found his segments to be funnier. I'll give credit to the Bergen segments that the dummies were kinda funny. But again, the fact that this "party" is basically a Man in his 40s and a little girl who was probably no older than 10. I for one completely understand that this was a different time and I'm sure there were no ill intentions. However if you showed anyone this today they would feel uncomfortable.
