    I love these Disney Eras videos. They are super informative and entertaining. I once made a speech about the history of Disney animation and it's fun to review things I learned when putting that together, and learning new things I never knew about.
    I don't think I've ever seen any of the movies of the wartime era, and I didn't even know they existed until I made that speech. It's a very fascinating era. I might watch these films someday.

    I’m in the middle of watching every Disney animated film in a row. I finished the Wartime Era around the end of 2018 and while I disliked them at the time I’ve grown a bit more fond in retrospect- probably wouldnt Watch Again but maybe I’d do individual shorts- anyway, these videos are good recaps!! Can’t wait for Silver Age which is my favorite so far

    The Wartime era was underrated. While I wish these films focused on a single narrative, I really do appreciate the artistic expression and experimentation in a lot of these films. Surprisingly, I remember a few of these from my childhood. Ichabod and Mr. Toad was my favorite. I will have to give these movies a re-watch soon.

    I've always loved these shorts! The Disney Channel used to show a lot of them in the 1980's individually or in compilation shows but I was also lucky enough to get a VHS of Melody Time, which has my all-time favorite cartoon "Johnny Fedora & Alice Blue Bonnet"! I still always stop at the window with the hat display at Hollywood Studios. I'll have to check and see if it's still there!

    I loved the wartime shorts and movies as a kid! My parents tended to randomly watch them on RUclips, and I had a collection on DVD featuring Johnny Appleseed, Paul Bunyan, John Henry, and Kasey Jones. I remember this collection incredibly fondly. The stories were charming, and the songs were beautiful. I only didn’t like one thing about the DVD. It had mini games on it, like most children’s movies in the early 2000s. But one of these games was impossible to beat, no matter what option you picked, and that was incredibly frustrating. However, this never tarnished the stories themselves. I loved those, and I always will. :> Johnny Appleseed was my favorite of the four.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  Год назад +1

      At that time there weren't any sequel films that used a "2". That actually wouldn't happen until the 1950s. I also think they just wanted to distinguish the two films apart from one another somehow, especially since films were often re-released in theaters. That way you wouldn't wonder if it was the original or the sequel. You just knew from the distinct titles.

      Song of the South was majority live-action, and the decidedly pro-Confederate live action is the odious part of the film. Disney has had no problem including James Baskett and "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" in other Disney TV & home video products, but the rest of the film is probably in the same back corner of the Disney Vault as Walt's cryogenically preserved head (at least as SNL once depicted it).

    • @Abbimation.
      @Abbimation. 3 года назад

      It was a live action film with animation hybrid, so it wasn't a package film at all.
      And though I never seen a film, I was at one point getting a film on Facebook among other classic Disney films and when I look at the price, I rather not going to spend my money on it.
      So once again I'll never going to see the film. At least I know about the plot of the feature. So the film is rather too inappropriate for modern standards.

      I bought all the Disney classics from Snow White to Zootopia on DVD a few years ago, and that's why these war-time films are also familiar, otherwise possibly not.

    I Hope that Jews sing Saludos Amigos when they were on Chile during the second War world. :D

    Wow. That is interesting. I think the wartime era is probably the weakest of the Disney eras. None of the movies became famous classics. On top of that they are broken into segements. So they have no plot. I did manage to watch all of them in recent time. When I watched this video, I realized what happening. DIsney was struggling really badly during the war. So he wasn't able to make full length movies. So he put shorts together and makes those into movies. Disney lost the European market due to the war. That lost a lot of money. Then Disney lost a lot of employees due to drafts and strikes. That is a hardship.
    The movies I like are the ones about Latin America. They are not technically good movies. None of the wartime fils are. However I like the Latin American movies. They bring a lot of interesting culture. This is the first time that Disney made a movie set someplace that isn't Europe or the United States. That trend continues. In modern times there are Disney movie set in all around the world. My favorite movie of this era is Three Caballeros. It is the only one that I enjoyed both as a kid and as an adult. Donald meets up with his friends, Jose and Panchito. They explore Latin America and have cool songs. My favorite songs are the slow pretty ones. There is the Baia one, the Mexico one and the Zandunga one. Zanduga is the one with dancing blue flowers. After that part there are dancing cactus. That part of the movie gets really wierd and colorful. I know that there are jokes about Disney movies being on acid. That is for wierd stuff like Alice and Wonderland, Fantasia and Dumbo. Now I wonder if Three Caballeros turns into a peyote trip. The penguin part is pretty cool. It is about a penguin moving from Antartica to South America. I realize that it makes a alot of sense in terms of biology. The story subverts the stereotype that penguins live in Antartica. The ocean off the west coast of South America is a very good home for sea life. There is a cool Humboldt Current that carries cool Antarctic water. It also churns up nutrients for sea life to eat. There are actually three related species of penguins living in this area. There is the Magellan penguin, the Humboldt penguin and the Galapagos Penguin. The Galapagos penguin is the only penguin that lives north of the equater. My second favorite wartime movie is Saludos Amigos. I watched it once or twice, and I couldn't get into it. When I watched it recently, I found it a lot more enjoyable and interesting. This movie is more of a behind the scenes documentary than a real movie. So this is one that I only enjoy when I am older. I think both of these movie can be expanded on. Each segments can be expanded into a full blown movie. My favorite Pixar movie is Coco. That is like the parts about Mexico. It is better since it is a full length animated movie with a solid plot. There is great culture and great music. I like the part where it goes into the Day of the Dead holiday. It is very interesting. The Andies Mountains is a cool setting. One can make a full length movie in there. There can be Incas, llamas and condors. I am a fan of Andian music. That cas easily turn into a muciscal. Disney did have a movie like this much later. It is the Emperer's New Groove. I haven't seen that movie is a really long time. I don't remeber it being very good. Maybe it would have worked better if it took itself more seriously and dove deeper into the folklore and culture. There can be other things. One can make a whole movie about Brazil. That would be cool. There can even be a full length western movie about a gaucho on the Pampas. Westerns are old hat. An interesting spin is to have the South American version. Disney going on a diplomatic trip to Latin America is interesting. Maybe that can be done in a movie. I did get a whole new idea. It is a plot to make these movies better. There is a threat of some big empire. Then there is a war. Donald Duck is on the side opposing the mighty empire. So Donald becomes a diplomat. He travels to Latin America to gain support. He befrends two other characters. Jose Carioca is the diplomat of Brazil. Panchito Pistoles is the diplomat of Mexico. They can still have all the fun scenes before. It is just that there is an important diplomatic mission underlying it. It provides a plot. I did think of a compelling reason why Latin America should join the side opposing the empire. The empire is very racist. That is a big part of making it so threatening and so dangerous. Since Latin Americans are not pure white people, they could be victims of racism. The empire could attack Latin America. So it is in Latin America's best interest to fight back. When everybody gets together as a team, they have the best chance of beating the Empire. I am not sure if this to too blatent as a basis on real life. I did think of going the Zootopia route and have discrimination of species be thinly vield rasism. The mighty race is the eagles. There are eagles on both sides of the war. Donald is a duck. Jose is a parrot. Pachito is a chicken. The bad eagles dicriminate against these other kinds of birds. So they should be stopped. That would be cool.

      The other four Disney movies of the era are not as good. I wold consider them to among the worst. Fun and Fancy Free and the Adventures of Icabod and Mr. Toad are a bit better. They only have two stories each, and they are fleshed out a bit better. I did learn from this video. Disney tried to make these stories into full length movies, but the harship of the time prevented him. Icabod and Mr. Toad is the one I enjoyed as a kid. I think both stories have potential to be full length movies. Both are based on books. I never seen Fun and Fancy Free until recently. I did use to watch the Micky and the Beanstalk short in a seperate video. Of the four stories of both movies, none are really that good or enjoyable. I think the best is the Ichabod story. It is pretty cool. I wish that was fleshed out into a full length movie. It would be stronger. I have just noticed something when I recently watched this short. This reminds of Beauty and the Beast. There is similarity of the characters. Belle is like a cross of Ichabod and Katrina. Ichabog is like Belle because both are nerds, and both like to read. Both are protagonists of the stories. Both stories start in the same way. The nerd character walks through the town. They read thier book. Then the gossopy townflok sing a song that mocks them. The songs are catchy. However in a way, it is mean. The nerds didn't do anything wrong. They didn't hurt anybody. They are just walking along, minding thier own buissness. I am a nerd myself. So I can relate. I feel sorry for the nerd characters. Belle is a lot like Katrina too. Both are very beutiful women. All the guys in town find her attractive. Katrina does have lighter hair though. That is like the Beast having light hair in human form. Brom Bones a whole lot like Gaston. They totally look alike. They are both the dumb jocks that are popular in town. The jock bullies the nerd. They also desire the beautiful woman. In the Icabod story, Brom bullies Ickabod and desires Katrina. In Beauty and the Beast, Gaston desires Belle for her beauty. However he also bullies her about her nerdy ways. It is very dysfunctional. Ickabod desires Katrina too. When he daydreams about her, he kisses a feather duster and sneezes. Oh if he likes feather dusters, then he is as bad as Lumire. Then I realize that Icabod looks a lot like Lumier in his human form. The Icabod story is a scary one. Icabod goes off into the forest and finds the monster, which is the headless horsman. Similarly in Beatuy and the Beast, Belle goes into the forest and finds another monster, the Beast. The Beauty and the Beast is the movie that scared me the most as a kid. It is really scary for a Disney movie. It also came out when I was really little. So I got scared more easily. It is funny how similar the characters are. I developed my own thory. Beauty and the Beast is set in Mideval France. The Icabod story is set in Colonial United States. So the Icabod stroy came at a later time. The town is mainly English. However there were some French people that immigrated into the town. There are plenty of French people in Canada. So they could have movied down. So the main character in the Icabod story are decendents of characters in Beauty and the Beast. Katrina is a descendent of Belle and the Beast. Icabod is a descendent of Lumier and the Feather Duster lady. Bro Bones is the descendent of Gaston. Gaston himself is childless, and he dies in the story. So he would have a surving sibling or cousin. They can have children, and Brom Bones is descende from them.
      The worst movies in the era are the ones that are broken up really bad. There are a lot of short sequences. The weaker one is Make Mine Music. This may even be the worst Disney movie in the canon. I found a lot of the shorts to be very unplesent. The only one I enjoy is Blue Bayou and Without You. I did used to watch Peter and the Wolf, when I was little. Now I am really disturbed looking back. The wolf didn't do anything wrong. It was just roaming in the woods minding its own business. Then Peter hunts it down for the fun and glory. That is so cruel. Peter is in the wrong. I only recently watched the whale story, and I didn't like it either. The whale didn't do anything wrong, and it just wanted to sing. However it was harpooned. It is just bad. I think of the first two eras, Bambi and Bongo are the two stories that handle the topic of animal cruelty the best. They show how cruel humans can be to animals. It brings the message of animal cruelty being wrong without being too preachy. It just shows animals suffer. That is all that is needed to get the message across. Later on Disney has 101 Dalmations. It tackles animal cruelty in a really brilliant way. One could have made the story using some wild animal that is actually used the for fur. They could show the animal suffering from hunting or from fur farming. However that didn't happened. Instead the animal is beloved family dogs. People are really attactched to thier dogs. So to see dogs suffer in the movie would make a big impact. If one did go for wild animals, I think the best are chinchillas and baby harp seals. They are so cute. If one wants to kill them for fur, they would have no soul. Melody Time is a better movie. It is still mediochre, but it is a bit more enjoyable. My favorite short is the one about samba. I think it should have been in Saludos Amigos or Three Caballeros instead. The ones about American legends are cool. It is a precurser to the Icabod story.

    Who drafts these scripts? And, man, the VO “artist” was ROUGH. Very unpleasant cadence and the voice inflection was very choppy and distracting.

    Some of these seem a little hagiographic when it comes to Walt Disney himself. I think it’s possible to love Disney while still acknowledging Walt’s shortcomings and moral failures as a human being.

      Our Disney Legends series of videos has started to paint Walt in a more realistic tone, looking at his relationships with his employees. I agree that we don't showcase his humanity as much as we showcase his greatness in pop culture, but these Era videos are meant to give a brief rundown instead of a more detailed and nuanced look at Walt and his studio over the years. I'm excited to jump more into those kinds of human stories where he failed or was flawed. I don't see him as a bad guy, but he was at times ruthless and unforgiving, and other times he just made some poor judgements. -Josh
