    It's both kinda funny and also kinda sad that whenever Walt personally invested in a more artistic and expressive film it always got shot down commercially, but the minute he caved to a more mainstream styled film it's all of a sudden the best movie since Snow White. Like, this man is just trying to be creative and the general public was never here for it. And we see this as a general trend even today - the Disney Post-Renaissance has several movies that were made with more artistry, talent, and expression in mind and the public just wasn't there for it. It just goes to show that the general moviegoing audience doesn't care for the artistry of animated films, they just want a safe cartoon with colorful and cute characters and nothing else.
    And that's a shame! Sleeping Beauty is probably one of Disney's best films ever made and the skill and effort the animators put into it is so impressive. But people just... didn't care for it.

    • @ModernMouse

      Thats definitely something Walt fought. He needed the money but really wanted to make something really artsy. Its a tough balance to pull off. I actually think Cinderella, Peter Pan, and Alice in Wonderland do it really well. They are probably the best examples or higher art meeting the cute and colorful characters. -Josh

      @SørenCast Z There sure are a lot of points that I want to tell you. First, you said that it was repetitive, however, you gotta realize that there had been only 2 princess films before the one. Also, if you think that Sleeping Beauty isn't that creative storywise, please I suggest you try reading the original story of Sleeping Beauty. The version of Maleficent and Fairy Godmother Sleeping Beauty is considered the ordinary one because the film became so classic and not because of the original storybook.

    I do think it's a shame that Sleeping Beauty was so unsuccessful, because it truly is one of Disney's most beautiful and intricate hand-animated films.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  5 лет назад +13

      Its definitely appreciated these days and you can see the artistry just by looking at any frame. I think people of that period still saw animation as a comedic cartoon rather than high art. The animation medium still fights that stigma today. Japan and other countries understand the seriousness and artistry that animation can have, but the western world, for the most part, sees it as "kids cartoons". -Josh

    Sleeping Beauty is really one of Walt’s crowning achievements. There is so much that Sleeping Beauty does that makes it incredible. It’s a beautifully drawn film. The shapes are so unique, the detail is sharp, and it represents a level of artistry that previous princess fairy tales didn’t have. While Snow White was revolutionary, and Cinderella furthered Walt’s personal vision and optimistic world view - Sleeping Beauty is the ultimate fairy tale. It really is timeless.
    The animation, the music, and the characters make it one of Disney’s best. Sleeping Beauty have us Disney’s most iconic villain: Maleficent. Sleeping Beauty was the first animated Disney film to make the prince a real character. Prince Phillip actually has a personality. I will never forget that breathtaking final act of Phillip fighting dragon Maleficent. It looks stunning to this day.

    The box office bomb of sleeping beauty results in Disney not doing a Disney princess film In 30 years is kind of similar to how Disney is not doing 2d animated films from the time being, because of how unsuccessful Winnie the Pooh(2011) was at the box office. It's like Cinderella returned to the Disney princess route, and started the silver age, with the princess and the frog, despite its box office underperformance, returned to traditional animation, while starting the second renaissance. And having the two latter films flop, did result in some serious consequences.

    • @ModernMouse

      That's a great parallel. There are quite a few parallels throughout Disney's history. I hope to explore some of them as we go along with this series! -Josh

    I used to watch 101 Dalmatians a ton as a kid, and I just recently re-watched it. I was afraid the xerography would bug me. I have to say though, that movie is phenomenal from the plot to the art direction to the songs to the characters. Cruella is one of the best Disney villains of all time - almost everything she says is a hilarious (but terrible) one-liner. Everything just works. It's kind of a valuable lesson that Walt's word isn't THE word on these movies. I understand why he didn't like it, but I strongly disagree.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  5 лет назад

      Walt always said story was more important than anything and because of that I think 101 Dalmations holds up. It's art style is unique and not bad looking. The studio did a great job making a cheaper film that actually looks fantastic and tells a wonderful story with amazing characters. One of my favorites of the area. -Josh

      @@ModernMouse good point! Also yeah they HAD to fundamentally change the art style to have a more fast and loose feel or else it might have come across as noob-ish and a big downgrade. Like imagine Sleeping Beauty in xerography, it wouldn't work nearly as well

    Ever noticed that Disney is most succesful when they do Princess films?
    "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" was an instant success.
    "Cinderella" jumpstarted the Silver Age, which also included "Sleeping Beauty."
    "The Little Mermaid" was the beginning of the Disney Renaissance, which also gave us Disney Princesses Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, and Mulan.
    The Revival began with "The Princess and the Frog" and we got movies like "Tangled," "Brave," "Frozen," and most recently "Moana." I don't know of any upcoming Disney Princess films apart from Frozen II, which is a sequel. And the Frozen Princesses aren't even official members of the Disney Princess franchise.

    To me the Silver era was great. It's not as good as the Golden era, but it is a huge step-up from the Wartime era. My favorite of the era is Lady and the Tramp. The weakest of the era to me was Alice in Wonderland and Sword in the Stone, although I would consider them decent. They use to be some of my least favorites for the past several years, but after looking back at them again very recently, I now see both of them as decent Disney movies.

    My problem with Sleeping Beauty is that there's too much emphasis on the fairy godmothers (or whatever they are). Had the movie focused more in Aurora I'm sure I would have liked it more as a kid. Of course, this is kinda difficult when the whole plot is that she's sleeping....

    Of all the movies Disney made when he was alive, I like Cinderella the best. Sleeping Beauty is a close second. Sleeping Beauty is an awesome movie about a fairy tale and a princess. I am very fond of the fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty. I think this movie is so beautiful. I like the music and the gorgeous backgrounds. It is like a tapestry come to life. I am shocked that this movie was not successful. People don't know what they are missing. When I watch 101 Dalmations, I find the difference jarring. 101 Dalmatians looks cheap and tacky by comparison. I learned in this video that there is something that did change. It is a time when people did Xerox. Maybe Disney will have to go through an awkward transition period before making nicer looking movies. Sword and the Stone looks tacky too. Jungle Book is an improvement. It has nicer looking backgrounds. 101 Dalmations is one of the better movies of old school Disney movies. I would not say it is the best Disney movie since Snow White. Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty are so much better. I find Lady and the Tramp a bit dull. Then I found that 101 Dalmations is a huge improvement. There is a decent plot with conflict and action. It is more exciting. There are dogs, and they do look cute. There is even a nice romance in the beginning of the movie. That is the kind of things in Lady and the Tramp. Then 101 Dalmations goes far beyond that. After the dogs settle down and start a family, there is a villain that steals the puppies and tries to kill them. That forms a good plot right there. I find this movie interesting for addressing animal cruelty. Fur is murder. Its shows that using animal fur is cruel by showing the beloved family dogs suffer. It gets the point across without getting preachy. Sword and the Stone is a really cool movie. It is my favorite movie of Walt Disney's time except for the three princess movies. I like Arthurian legend. This movie focuses on two great characters. One is Arthur, which is the most important character. The other is Merlin, which is my favorite character. I like how this movie focuses more on Merlin and his magic as opposed to other things in Arthurian legend. It even has shape shifting into animals, which is one of my favorite magical abilities. The wizard's duel makes for an awesome climax. The Jungle Book is one of the lesser movies of Disney. It is just a road trip through the jungle and not much else. It has Bageera trying to take Mowgli to the humans for his own safety. Then Mowgli drags his feet and try to stay. Mowgli does change in the last scene when he finds an attractive human girl. I think that was the best part of the movie. Mowgli did make a major change, and that was interesting. This video said that Jungle Book used to be darker, and Disney didn't want that. Now I am wondering what that other version was like. Something that would be a bit deeper would have been nice. I wonder if Tarzan would have been like the Jungle Book but better. Tarzan does struggle alot with his identity. He does also spend a lot more time with humans, and he learns thier ways. I haven't seen Tarzan in a long time. I am wondering if it was better. I know that Walt Disney passed away when making Jungle Book. In this video, this part is so sad. RIP
