The trouble with Guthrie........... and don't get me wrong, I spent a fantastic tuition weekend with him some years ago, is he is just too damn good!! I couldn't relate to his playing, only stare in amazement. The gulf is just too wide - mind you he could also put a few beers away and still be up for shredding at 9am !!
Ted is just a loud mouth idiot. The only credit is that Ted wrote some hits. GG is just on another planet sadly, not enough people know about him. As far as skills? Hands down GG is way better.
I’ve always wondered why speed seems to be the biggest factor when deciding if someone is great or out of this world. I love watching players like this, because it is cool, fascinating and I can’t do it. But, the faster they play, the less they say. It’s just a bunch of strung along cold statements that gets annoying fast. We saw Yngve in a third floor bar, in a warehouse, under a bridge, under route 95 in Providence, RI and after 3 songs, we left.
I of course agree that an abundance of shredding can lead to a lack of emotion and depth. For that reason I have never been a big Yngwie fan either, I just don’t feel what he is playing. However, Guthrie Govan is by no means a soulless shredder. He sure has the ability and technique to be that, as evidenced by this video. While this video is fun, I think it is a poor representation of Guthrie as a player. Check out Drive Home by Steven Wilson for an extremely emotional and meaningful solo delivered by this man, very Gilmour-esque. This video ruclips.net/video/nO4iOkTRAyI/видео.html cuts very annoyingly but is a great representation of Guthrie as a player. All the other guys, all legends, playing in this video almost become a joke as soon as Guthrie starts to solo.
Guthrie can do it all. Most of all he's humble. He can only continue to learn it all w this approach. One of the most talented ears on planet. He's much more then just guitar . A guitar master, none the less, but Complete musical abilities w fresh ideas because he's an open minded dude. Loves respects, has reverence for people.
@@loganpearson9206 Completely agree! I know Guthrie Govan has expressed disdain at ranking guitarists, but I find it hard to not rank him at least as one of the greatest players ever.
If you'd ask Guthrie about playing fast he'd say it's just a tool in the toolbox. In other words, it's one of the many skills he has & uses to accomplish his musical ideas. Singing with the range, tone & musical accuracy of a Bob Dylan like voice may be a favorite of many. However, if limited to the range, tone & musical accuracy of a Bob Dylan like voice, one's vocal toolbox would be small. Many may prefer a Bob Dylan like vocal but compared to the vocal toolbox of many other singers, it's limiting.

Never mind the speed and accuracy, his bends are more impressive to me.
How much did that guy drink
But can he play smoke on the water.
Yes, he can.
