I really appreciate this second channel. It's always nice to hear you talk about stuff, you're good at formulating your thoughts. That, and British accents tickle my brain.
The new Castlevania DS collection tempt me out of emulating the games thanks to the ability to see both versions of the second screen at once. That's a unique, convenient thing! I feel like Clock Tower with an integrated, easy to access guide would push it into the 'good value' slot in my brain, since going for the various endings is kinda tedious and involves a lotta cross-reference. The guide being untranslated made me audibly sigh when I was watching a friend play it. But shout-out to non-English, non-Japanese Scissorheads!
I think those full screen notifications are the dealbreaker for me. The save system is also baffling and honestly sounds frustrating, but I could at least play around that by saving at each room. On the other hand blocking the whole screen in the middle of a cutscene while not pausing the game behind it is just completely unacceptable imo.
Remember: companies use sales of rereleases like these to determine whether they should make more new games in the same vein. If you like the game, you should support it financially.
Might pick this up then, though I hope they fix the unlock notifications on a first run issue. That's just baffling. Liking the casual review format on this channel!
Oh, I always aprecciate translations in other languages So many times I played a game that I loved but I couldn't suggest it to a friend because it he's not fluent in english and litterally gets headaches trying to understand long wall of text
I played the original fan translation. It had plenty of good elements, but overall it was just annoying even when I had save states and cheats enabled. Rewind definitely isn't worth buying at full price. (And no, this isn't just me hating something because it's old. Sweet Home is even older, and I loved that game.)
Great video as always, and on the game preservation argument. I don't care if it's a fully custom version rebuild from the original code or badly concealed emulation wrapper, what I want is for these old games to be available in at least some shape or form outside of the community being forced to do it themselves by essentially breaking the law and do ROM dumps from cartridges or discs. Give me a convenient way to buy these and I'll do so, secondary market doesn't count, I'm not going to pay hundreds of pounds to play a game that I find interesting. It's why I'm glad Konami and Capcom occasionally do their collections, be it Castlevania or Megaman and others, that let me get to these games without needing to resort to piracy or paying some market speculator on ebay way too much money.
Agreed. I wanted Rule of Rose forever, but it sells for $400 second hand. Like no. Not happening. I am keeping my eye on yomiwari collection, albeit it seems pricey too (~$100 usd)
I will say, I actually kinda understand why they did the whole save states thing. In Clock Tower, entering certain rooms or doing certain things can fuck you out of the ending you want and that may have been made a choice so that you can get a specific ending or cutscene you want without having to redo an entire file, you can simply reload your save state instead. The auto saving can sometimes lock you into a certain ending or scene you don’t want to get or see and I think that may be why they implemented SS over auto saves.
I like Clock Tower, so I might be biased, but I personally think it's worth it if you haven't experienced the originals before. I've played both the Snes and the PS1 ones, and I still had a good time with it. Rewind is such an interesting game mode, Scissorman is actually a threat in Rewind/Modern mode lol. It helps that you can change the cursor speed with a button press, I didn't like how slow the cursor was in the vanilla PS1/SNES version. I didn't like how the games automatically saved when you got an ending, so my first time playing I had to get endings S, A, and B again, it wasn't too cumbersome since I already played this game so many times. The best part about Rewind mode is running on stairs and instantly and getting your stamina back faster in Rewind, I didn't have any issues with the QTE's? Maybe I just got lucky I dunno.
The menu music gets on my nerves while going through the extras. I dreamed of a Clock Tower rerelease since watching early RUclips Let’s Plays. Kinda wished WayForward included more versions like the Wonderswan edition. I hope patches are coming soon, Steam compiled quite a list. The game scales weirdly with resolution. QTEs not working is annoying.
it's fascinating and as unlikely as it is i would enjoy some day learning more about how this release ended up as it did. clearly some very deep passion, right along side some baffling results makes me incapable of atributing it to malice or lack of care. maybe adding the deluxe content broke autosaves somehow, and they had no budget or time to fix it so they chose between cutting it or a save state and bam, save state. who knows! intriguing, and very glad it exists
I have no issues with a direct port as long as it functions well. (Looking to get it for switch). I never played it original since it was japanese only, and i cannot seem to find an english translation rom so yeah. It takes the effort out of the issue for me. Besides, it looks good even today. I like the retro style.
I thought the fighting back QTEs didn't work when your portrait was in the red from running everywhere. In the example you give around 8:49, it looks like your portrait is red. That could also explain why they don't work "the first time" but do work when you come back with full sanity or whatever that is.
possibly but if so this is an undocumented mechanical change because it does not behave like that in Original mode or any other released version of game, continuing doesn't restore your stamina in this game so you remain at red it just kinda, decides to work the second time
@@Punchy2nd Dying on red has been true since the original Japanese sufami release. I haven't played it in like a decade so I didn't remember if the meter regenerates, but from the Clock Tower Wiki: "Demented: Means Jennifer is on her last chance, can no longer fight Bobby, and will die if attacked. This is colored red."
I love Super Nintendo or Super Famicom. I got Clock Tower Rewind on Halloween and got all the endings cleared on Swtch. Was thinking of playing Clock Tower Deluxe (after getting a SNES Mouse cheap on Amazon) for Halloween this year, but since Rewind came out, I got that on Switch instead. Maybe next time I play Deluxe out of boredom. Meh. The Quick Save and Rewind button are more like training wheels for me now. Now I think I can play Deluxe on my Super Famicom with a Super Everdrive and a SNES Mouse or First Fear on PSone hopefully with a PlayStation Mouse (or just extract Cue/Bin from the Disc and play on my phone with the Gamesir X2 on the go) no problem. I wonder if Wayforward is going to implement touch screen and bug fix update for Switch soon. Now Clock Tower (Rewind) became my cozy game😃When I was a teen or tween, I was too afraid to play a Clock Tower game. Hard for me to believe it myself now😅 I'd say for Super Fans, get the game on whatever system you have. If you want to play with a mouse, get the Steam version. If not, just play Clock Tower Deluxe on SNES with a flash cart and mouse.
Given how many people I’ve seen complain about not wanting to download ROM/ISO files from the Internet and considering a simple patcher to be a hassle. I would have to say that there is tremendous value here, all that that might be a moot point since those are probably younger people who wouldn’t be attracted to such gameplay in the first place.
So looking at the cover scan also having one side flipped the upside-down page isn't inexplicable - it's the middle, and the instruction booklet has two fronts that meet there, rather just going cover-to-cover
Only found you on RUclips recently, and just watched the other channel video on the Metal Gear emulation-port, and I think there's something big missing that you mentioned once but otherwise glossed over. The Metal Gear re-release was $60 for a minimal-effort re-release, bugs and all. And yeah, it's 5 games, but the Castlevania Advanced Collection is $20, and routinely goes on sale for about $10, for 4 games which are newer than some or all of what's in the MGS collection. I think a lot of the hate for some of these re-releases is for ones that feel like a cash grab more than any sort of honest effort to make the game available to people who haven't played it, or can't play it any more. Like "Want this nostalgia? Fork over the cash!" Clock Tower: Rewind and Castlevania Advanced Collection both sit at "Very Positive" currently on Steam, and the MGS Vol 1 titles have *mostly* worked their way up to "Very Positive", but a few still sit at "Positive" and the "bonus content" is "Mixed"... probably because of that price disparity.
Always played a translated The First Fear version with the mouse, so its nice that they added that extra content in. Did the SNES version have mouse support, since there was the SNES mouse? I'm glad it exists in an official capacity, but its been nearly 30 years. It's hard to imagine a younger generation caring about this, and anyone who's had an interest in this game in the past has had all that time to source the fan translation. It's not really fair to compare this to those efforts, but no one could have predicted this would ever even get an official release, so its understandable that people would have flocked to any available option. But as a modern release, there's always the capacity for updates and additions, and one would hope those full screen notifications and the save system would be addressed right off the bat. I don't really expect this to end up being the definitive version of this game, but the capacity is there, and just having an official version is nice at the very least.
the snes version did not have mouse support, no. a lot of people will claim it does but clock tower snes actually contains special code to give you an error message if you try lol
The popup messages are incredibly annoying. Also very interesting that the game and its store page promote the new rewind mode, yet theres nowhere to tell you what this changes are.
So after playing through this game a few times, the game is actually the port of the enhance first fear version. It also contains the extra game mode known as "Rewind" mode.
it's not. the ps1 version looks substantially different and has completely different music. this is the snes version romhacked with ps1 content. I'm being picky about the distinction here but it's not the ps1 version.
It always had SNES mouse support (Correction: I remembered this wrong.), as for the rewind mode: Most of the playstation content was already In the SNES version as unused content. A shame they couldn't do a HD release, Jennifer's HD sprites are gorgeous.
no. it didn't. i don't know why people say this but the snes version does not support the mouse and never did. in fact the game will specifically prevent you from even starting the thing if it detects the mouse is plugged in
Enjoying the second channel, thanks.

I thought of getting this game, but hearing that it's just an emulated port of the Snes game with no features is legitimately insane.
So all those animated bits from the trailers are just comics you unlock and not cutscenes somehow integrated into emulated SNES game?
yeah they don't show up in the game you have to go into the extras menu to view them.

yeah the best place I've found to get the exact change list is the Clock Tower Deluxe romhack's accompanying spreadsheet lol
