Definitely a cool idea to have a door in the back. Would almost make it possible to haul 20-foot lumber or pipe stacked in the middle. How much would one of those fiberglass 36" door hatches cost?

Early model here, removed and replaced inserts and bolts, replaced the seal, repaired the cracks, reinforced the edges, painted, and replaced the glass window with polycarbonate. Thought about having it open, but opted for less work and better insulation.

I saw one rear hatch turned into a tail gate very nice idea.

Great video. Very insightful on whats possible. I have resealed my 73 twice and replaced the inserts and screws with a kit from cooperative

The GMC Engineers were way ahead of their time; to bad they didn't keep producing the coach OR they don't bring it back.

Now would be the perfect time to bring it back replace that 455, give it a hybrid electric - diesel motor, i'd say full electric but having to sit at a charging station for like 10 hours would probably nuke their sales. set the braking system up for regenerative braking, use insight gained from 40 years of people moding and renovating these things to inform new design and material choices. would honestly love to see GM revive this platform, i feel like it really had potential that never got realized well beyond being a motorhome.

@@lattitude01 what if they made the front wheels and one set of back wheels electric motorized; then the other 2 back wheels spin an alternator that would charge the batteries while moving. in effect it would be doing what the Teslas do when braking but instead a full time charger to keep the batteries up. Combine that with a solar panel up top to help keep those batteries up and you might get some decent range.

I found that over tightening the old inserts with a few washers got them out fine

RVs are basically custom vans taken "next-level"... so, how about a full plexi-glass panel in place of the hatch? It'd go nice with the "Snack Wagon" full-window treatment I once saw...! =;D

Wow you have a lot of these. How long does it take to refurbish them? And what is the average cost?

did GMC ever make a rear hatch with no window? i am thinking of buying a Birchaven with a rear bathroom, and having that huge window in the bathroom is kind of disturbing. since i live in a northern climate, i would like to get rid of the rear window and insulate it all.

How much does it cost to own or have the back door version of the rear panel?

Great video and very informative. Only thing is what happened to the aspect ratio? It looks like you switched to 4:3 or something. The videos used to take up the whole screen now they have a black boarder.

We think it's because of the new editing system when we add pictures because the framing is different with the pictures than it is with the video so when we combine them it does that, at least that is what we have noticed. Still working on figuring out how to fix it.....
