Watching this video definitely took me back to the prime and good old days of Kmart. I currently live approximately 10 min away from this Kmart shown in the video since we first moved into the area in 1997. I was born in 1996 so my memory of this Kmart is quite slim, but I do remember in the mid 2000s how popular and well kept Kmart was just like how Target is today. Especially being a kid where they had the hottest toys and electronics was like you were in a dream. Now it’s currently a Amazon Fresh store since they opened it in 2021. *Fun fact* Originally the location of this Kmart was a originally a drive in movie theater in the late 1950s and 1960s hence why it has a huge parking lot, then it became Venture years after that, then it became Kmart years after that, and now currently it became a Amazon Fresh store years after that. Wow! The evolution is crazy! 🙌🏼

Yeah, sadly the building got torn down, but it will probably forever be the most famous Kmart thanks to that 1998 opening video uploaded on youtube. That really was special to record an opening like that.

I used to shop at this Kmart all the time when I was growing up. I lived literally 2 minutes from this store. This is a wonderful area to live in

I spent some years at Sears Holdings (Sears and Kmart) headquarters in Hoffman Estates until a couple years ago.. There are some tidbits I can give you about this particular store. Until it closed, this location was the company's "flagship" Kmart store for the past 10+ years. Due to the close proximity to corporate office and its very high sales volume, most merchandising testing and planning were done at this location while almost all the TV commercials (including the famous ship my pants) were filmed at the Bloomingdale, IL location due to that store's proximity to corporate office but very low volume (less to no interruption to sales) and the store's interior being very up kept and cosmetically nice. This was also one of the highest sales volume locations for the company for the past decade. This location was also the official home of the company's MyGofer program. It was the company's "Amazon prime" prototype (before there was even Amazon Prime); however, when it flopped for the company, it turned into the company's internal employee ordering program for corporate headquarters with all orders and prescriptions coming from this location.. For years, this location was thought to be the last Kmart in the company to close due to it being on the top sales-wise. However, since it was a leased space, it ended up not working out that way.. In reality, the very last Kmart store to close will likely be the location inside Headquarters (known as the MyGofer store but it's an actual extremely tiny Kmart location with an actual store number number, etc.). All the locations will likely be closed by the end of this year or by the end of the first quarter next year.. To see a very recent view of inside this store, look up the YT account of "Demolition Crew" and watch their recent video "WE TRASHED A STORE - retail rage".. I think they have another video or 2 but they were filmed inside this very location.

You actually confirmed what I kind of figured out on my own. I knew Norridge was its flagship due to the constant upkeep, the K Fresh, and being used in advertising (all things companies do with their flagship stores)- it seemed to shift to Des Plaines after, and now appears to have been shifted to Guam (look at Kmart's main page on Facebook, the last several months have been constantly highlighting Guam, while most of 2019 was the Des Plaines store being featured).
I also knew about the Kmart in headquarters, because the Hot Wheels Collector's Day lists a Kmart with the same address as Headquarters- list here mattel.scene7.com/is/content/Mattel/Hot%20Wheels%20Collector/01_Downloads/KMart%20Promo/201904KmartStoresAprilEventpdf.pdf , and when I asked a manager at Crystal City's Kmart about it, he told me that there was a tiny one that was there, but it was a kind of a pseudo Kmart- not like the "real" Kmart's as he called it. I don't know, I don't ever plan to go there, but you see it listed in that list for that Collector Day.
Last, I also knew Norridge's Kmart was going to be redeveloped since December, because I saw this article in the Tribune about it www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/norridge/ct-nhh-preview-tl-0102-20191227-p6zgafcfdvdpfgmezufsiluerm-story.html. So, since no one had filmed this as an abandoned Kmart, and I was already planning on hitting Des Plaines, and I knew Norridge wasn't too far away, I filmed it as a way to end the Kmart history with it, the same day I recorded this: ruclips.net/video/KbVimXgnvUQ/видео.html

Des Plaines was a "playground" store for a few at headquarters. The few remaining heads from the Michigan based headquarters used some of the company's last dollars a few years back to "remodel" (a very half-assed remodel) to a new format (shortened height gondola, new interior signage, etc.). It was more of a last hurrah than actually doing anything to make the company go forward.. As for the foreign Kmarts, there are many of them. Very few actually company owned, most "franchised" or "company name licensed" out. At headquarters, there's a "wall" in one of the buildings of hundreds of photos of the different Kmarts of around the world. Most having the old red "K" green "mart" logo. The franchised out locations are actually based out of one of the company's other headquarters (It's in India, I believe). When the US operations ceases, I believe the remaining foreign locations will be shifted over to the overseas headquarters so there will no longer be any US ties at all..

@@TheInternetToaster Lampert never really intended to go forward, you can tell that by their real estate focus now. Even Guam was company owned, but now one of Eddie's minions owns it. It's time to face that no Kmart's are going to last in the US, the Guam one isn't even safe (despite all the focus Kmart is putting on it in their "advertising" on Facebook- if you can even call that little amount advertising), because now it's technically leased, and because it's no longer owned by the company, it means at any point they can pull the lease on it, and kick Kmart out (Seritage is well known for doing that very thing). Here's the article about Kmart Corporation selling it to TF Tamuning

I’ve always thought it’s very rude to abruptly shut something down that a community relies on. Especially when it’s a good performing location. (I know they probably don’t have much control of it but sometimes I blame the victim)

All the ones that opened that day looked a lot like that as well. That was Floyd Hall's Kmart era when he converted those 45 Venture's into Kmart's. That's why when I first saw the BIG Kmart conversion of the former Venture in Fairview Heights, IL (it moved from an existing store directly across the street), I was impressed, and it began a 22-year love affair with Kmart (it made me view Kmart more than just a childhood place at that point).
